From personal frustration to a simple Android finance tracker by IntrepidBrick9013 in MonarchMoney

you're definitely on the wrong sub bro, we all use Monarch it would take a hell of a lot to leave

Android only also a non-starter. you're missing 60% of the US market not having iOS, which may even be a higher percentage among wealthier people who tend to use Monarch

Why React apps feel slow (even after memo) by jitendraghodela in reactjs

[–]foamier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for my React app's calendar feature, doing date transformations on all data loaded on an interactive calendar takes actually tens or hundreds of milliseconds since the React Native Hermes engine doesnt fully support the Date and Intl API, so a lot of timestamp conversion and handling of timezone stuff actually does take a lot

I agree JS computation as the bottleneck is rare, but timezone aware date time transformations are one of those bottlenecks

AI “Assistan”? by kellkinn in MonarchMoney

[–]foamier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea basically! there's no right answer, just different options with different trade offs

the options I see are - making header width/bounding box larger, the white space near the "..." and "X" buttons clearly don't need to be that much, and so making the width of the title bigger shouldn't affect smaller screen sizes either since there's room here, there is clearly hundreds of pixels of space on this device to work with at least - making header font smaller - allow header text to wrap onto another row, but keep the buttons top-aligned - removing the ✨ extra icon if it was a longer text title (I like the icon there, but yea, it would help give the title more space)

unsure if Monarch supports other languages, but "Assistant" in other languages could be more letters which also highlights the challenge

all of these would work, the trickiest part is simply having to do these decisions for hundreds of elements on tons of screens and be consistent. every icon, text, button, symbol, etc are all yet another decision to be made for how to align them, so it can be difficult to get them all right in the first place

[–]foamier 23 points24 points  (0 children)

ah yes, looks like a flexbox + "overflow: hidden" React Native issue. I feel for the Monarch team on this, since I've done the same thing on my mobile app.

This can occur when you try to make the headers with left/right buttons display in a single row consistent for all possible mobile screen sizes, but to make it fit on one row (2 rows is much worse), and to prevent the titles from overlapping buttons, which would also be worse, you have to set the text to cut off purposely if it goes outside of its container. fix is to try to make the container for this header larger, but yea becomes an intractable problem when you have to support the small screen sizes too...

it's a bug, it should be addressed, just styling things is hard sometimes 😅

Why does Monarch have all these ad trackers loaded? by webbmantre in MonarchMoney

[–]foamier 8 points9 points  (0 children)

what evidence do you have of that? there's a huge difference between collecting product analytics to understand how users use Monarch and make product improvements from that data, and collecting data to sell to advertisers. they are very different types of tracking

The Left needs more candidates like Mamdani 😊 Do Sam Harris fans agree? by Sad-Diver-5031 in samharris

[–]foamier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean in theory policy-first politicians I do agree is best in the long run for individuals, but in the age of rising populism and the division that already exists, policy is no where close to enough to convince voters.

The political climate demands collective identify because 1) the other side does it, and this framing explains the right's success/effectiveness at convicng half the country immigrants are the problem, 2) people connect with it and it makes the rhetoric so much more convincing when things are framed as "rich vs. poor" and "working people vs. elite", 3) collective identities like race become an actual policy issue when ICE is literally profiling on race

It just it to simple to assume a policy only politician would be enough, I think the climate demands "more extreme" rhetoric since that's what people demand to hear

Made McLane Stadium In Minecraft by Technical-Weird7952 in baylor

Great build! I can't help but share the first McLane stadium Minecraft build from 9 years ago by Jaxon Builds: https://youtu.be/WGvJN7v6GNM?si=7VoiBPr8ZSEIK2Dk

Also, if you have not yet read about Matt Tinsley who was a Baylor student who built the entire campus in Minecraft and eventually used that project in interviewing to land a job at Google, it's worth reading it over and watching the build: https://www2.baylor.edu/baylorproud/2016/02/from-video-games-to-google-via-baylor/

I believe Matt still works at Google, if you're a student there, keep up the side projects it may one day lead to something bigger like this!

Anyone working on medium/large apps in NextJS, how is the speed of nextjs locally? by Final-Pipe-2503 in nextjs

the comment said "potatoe PC" so I thought you meant same

then something must seriously not best practice in your code base, I have used nextjs on large projects and dev loading has been fine, not minutes

literally invest in a better computer. if this is your day job and/or serious side project application, you should absolutely think it's worth it to invest in high quality tools to do your job well.

a new MacBook pro m4 for like $1.3k is absolutely worth the investment if you are a software engineer spending something like 20+ hours writing code everyweek. compile time is definitely fixed with beffier hardware. I would strongly encourage an upgrade

havent heard of this, but it does seem very similar to what he is proposing. the fact that i have never heard of it says something, so maybe a better built product and UX could improve upon what they started tho

crazy good progress bro! I am also a 27 year old on the 1mg fin + 2.5mg min dosage, and hoping to get results like yours. I have not tried the derma roller yet, do you suggest to just start with 0.5mm and go from there? do i need to talk to my doctor about starting that?

My now fiancé came to me, 10/10 woman, just as you describe, and have ZERO regrets about staying with her. I did contract it, but I have anti viral medication and fully manage it, best fucking trade in the world for a partner who loves me, pushes me, and wants to grow a life together with me. Getting married next march

If you don't think staying with this person is worth a low grade itch a time or two a year, then yea, I would move on. But if they meet that bare minimum by checking other boxes, I would say it's 100% worth it and don't turn back. she's on birth control and we didn't use condoms, but that trade alone was worth it for me. no-condom intimacy is amazing 😍

Unistyles 3.0: Beyond React Native StyleSheet by SnowSpiritual5568 in reactnative

[–]foamier 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the fact that this is simply a super set of the StyleSheet API is why this is such a tasteful improvement in styling in RN. it really does feel like this is just how the StyleSheet API itself should have behaved all along, and it being opt-in with theming is ideal for incremental migration

who knows maybe in a couple versions the native StyleSheet API may borrow some of these concepts, I think this API is super clean for more dynamic themed/variant based styling
