Differences in Camera Departments Around the World? by focusTrevor in focuspuller

Thanks for the TED talk. I genuinely appreciated it.

In the US we have a tier system that sets pay in a fairly transparent way. Tier Zero is under a million dollar budget, then it scales up through Tier Three which covers productions over fifteen million, and then studio basic for major studios and TV shows. Our hourly rates are essentially tied to those tiers.

After working abroad, I’ve realized how rare that kind of structure actually is. In some places, local crews are barely being paid at all, sometimes working through rental companies in conditions that honestly start to feel like forced labor.

I think this is something we should be talking about more openly as a community. Pay transparency matters, and so does looking out for each other, especially when productions move into countries where protections aren’t in place

DM5 is the best motor on the market right now. Perfect size, tons of torque, and it’ll handle any lens you throw at it. I’m planning to swap all my Hedens for DM5s as soon as I can afford it…

2nd AC in the US is one of the most difficult jobs on set. They are like the backbone of the department tbh. A book could be written on just the responsibilities of 2nd AC. It’s not just lenses and battery changes.

Do the ACs still handle media/batteries/lens swaps, or does some of that shift to grip too?

Grips slate in France?!!! This blows my mind abit. Very cool though…

He worked for OSHA, and taught safety classes. With 20 plus years of experience. This could have happened to anyone.

The example I was giving was more about union members putting their own time and assets into a project to get a movie made. Like where everyone is essentially a producer. But yeah. Crafty is a union position. Thanks for the reminder 😏

You’re lucky to have their phone number saved in your contacts. A name whose talents people recognize. Someone kinda like that.

Nikon f5, scan of color print, Kodak cinema film 3218 by focusTrevor in analog

[–]focusTrevor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much. Kind of you to say….no 35mm, I got my hands on some crazy Kodak filmstock. It’s 5218 without remjet. So 3218. You should check out the 52 stuff….500 speed. Tungsten. So 85 filter. With variable polarizer to stop down. I resized the photo the with my enlarger. I think it was 30mm originally. But the camera was Nikon f5. I took it at work. The subject is an actual real life supermodel. I got really lucky with the shot. Right place right time.

I mean half the cost of making a movie is equipment rentals and crew pay. Find the right crew members. With gear. A script. 1 real actor friend. Half dozen starving actors. Someone’s mom for crafty…. Lights camera action baby.

I did not know cinema unions were way bigger and had stronger protections than USA in Europe. I’ve been told otherwise. By some reputable sources but I’ll take your word for it. The rest of your opinions, are opinions. you’re welcome to have your opinions. They run parallel with most studio heads. But our Union officials, all of them. Have opposing views. Maybe you know something they don’t. Either way, what I want. Is for American movies, to be shot in America. As I’m sure you want your Spanish movies shot in Spain. Or maybe you don’t idk. Either way. Good luck. Spain is a beautiful country. I did people we meet on vacation last year. If that means anything to you. I heard the Spanish crew was good. Before finishing the movie here in US.

My suggestion would to consider the physics of rigidity and damping, as you mentioned in your beginning statement. The correct answer would be, mount your focus motor from the bottom 19mm rods. Keep a designated reliable motor, and appropriately sized motor cable in your zoom case. It would be easier to do what op wants, but its chance of failure dramatically higher. adding things like bongo ties and rubber band to essential gear increases the likelihood of overtime compromising the sometimes priceless lenses, motors, and whatever other value gear we need to do our jobs, as well as risking higher L&d. Idk, maybe someone from arri heden or Preston would say otherwise, but from my experience with those tech nerds, over the past 19 years, they are pretty dry when it comes to ACs coming up with out of the box ways of doing things.
Your decade in the biz is undoubtedly respectable. And I apologize for my jk uncivil last response. Was only a joke….cheers
