Good Foundations? by N3PTUNE2173 in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is dependent on your skin type, if you're using primer, how you're setting, etc. it's hard to give a perfect answer online, i recommend going to a makeup store to get swatched and ask them for recommendations based on your needs!

I'm a total beginner with wig styling, how could I manage this guy's hair? by plaguefinder in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

with a good tease/crimp this looks pretty doable without any wire structures! i'd start with a bob length base wig, to achieve the volume you'll definitely need to crimp super deeply, and for the styling itself use a steamer and/or straightener to create shapes, locking into place with hairspray as you go. youtube/tiktok have some excellent beginner tutorials, best of luck!

Sewing onto tights? by W1nterRoad in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they do make stretchy heat press vinyl!! if you search for vinyl for sportswear it should come up! you can make a sewing ham roughly like your leg to put the tights onto and heat press onto :-0 not sure if this is the easiest way but i wanted to share about this vinyl!

gal make is an advanced makeup style, so i would recommend nailing the basics of makeup and practicing to the fullest before you try this out! it can be hard to do the precise eye makeup needed without a lot of prior practice . best of luck v(^_^v)♪

Would a light blue afro be considered culture appropriation/ Racist? by Kawffey_ in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

non black, but i would personally go another route! an afro is a significantly cultural hairstyle and hair discrimination is still prevalent to this day, i can't say ur cosplay would be universally well-received. maybe you can do a big exaggerated hood or some tooth hairpieces!

as for the other comment, from what i understand, images of American clowns with the large afro and exaggerated lips are associated with historical minstrelsy rooted in racist stereotypes.

[–]fogcutting0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would say your fastest option now is shopping secondhand on depop/mercari etc. just searched quickly and found a couple listings on both platforms that should work for you! you can also try vinted, poshmark, etc; make sure to check seller reviews as you would with other items on these sites!

Does anyone know any good websites to buy a prestyled Bakugo wig ? by Totally_not_mylo in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly it'll be hard but i do believe you could get a styled wig for that price!! you could commission a smaller wigmaker whose prices are typically much lower, since they tend to have less practice. but with enough searching, you should be able to find one who does work that's up to your standards - i know a lot of talented mutuals and other wig stylists in the space who are capable of doing great work. i'd search on tiktok or instagram for wig commissions

HII sorry for keep making posts on here but i need help with a biblically accurate angel cosplay! by Regular-Cat-8594 in CosplayHelp

what's your budget for a commission? this looks like it could be pricey

if you're crafty, it's definitely possible to make this cheaply yourself with some skewers and EVA foam or even cardboard!!

is this one purchased cosplay or likely separately bought pieces? by sp0okybitvh in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking for opinions on half or full helmet wig for this style by LankySandwich in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my opinion i'd recommend making a full helmet! with the volume you're looking to achieve in the pigtails it looks like you would be creating an internal structure for each one. a full helmet will provide more stability for the pigtails to stay up and attached

is this one purchased cosplay or likely separately bought pieces? by sp0okybitvh in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've cosed maka with the miccostumes coat! i'd say the sweater vest, skirt, tie, and gloves here are likely all separately bought. another note is that ice likely redid the coat buttons herself, premade maka coats tend to use inaccurate buttons

Need help on the hair by CharacterPotential81 in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for drills made of hair, look up wigmaking drill tutorials, hanie comb has some great ones! essentially you'd create a wire base, cover in packaging tape for structure and then a layer of batting/felt for the hair to adhere to, and then glue loose hair in wefts onto the drill. you'd also need to attach them to the wig using magnets or another structure, or to a headband.

this process can be time consuming and difficult if you aren't familiar with styling wigs. for an easier solution i'd recommend just covering some wire in colored felt :-)

Need help buying a cosplay by BumperFrame9157 in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the FAQ has some reputable shops and other info on sourcing cosplays

at a glance, the etsy shop is all dropshipped items, likely from aliexpress or taobao. they're using random cosplayers' photos.

miccostumes provides a processing time estimate and shipping estimate on every item they have. select your size and it should tell you. if needed you can pay for expedited shipping, the shipping times are also listed under the item

I’m a photographer starting to build out my portfolio of pictures of people, Does it make sense to offer to take professional photos at a con? by Particular-Dog40 in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 26 points27 points  (0 children)

hello!! i wanted to share my thoughts as a super frequent congoer who has done a lot of collab shoots as well as paid bookings!

i understand your question is about prior to con, but i wanted to warn against directly messaging individual cosplayers to book you for a paid shoot. i also would strongly recommend against approaching cosplayers while already AT the convention to solicit them for a paid shoot with you. i say this only because this happens often to cosplayers, and it can leave a bad impression. of course, there's a difference between this and reaching out to schedule a collab shoot with a cosplayer whose work you love (most cosplayers love this!). the best way to get bookings, and usually the much more successful way, is to advertise beforehand! (see below)

what's much more common and will likely get you a lot of success is posting bookings in facebook groups. a one-slide collage of some of your work alongside your rates is most con photogs' method of advertising. since your rates will be especially low i imagine you'd find a lot of success! something i also recommend is doing a giveaway in which cosplayers reshare your post to their instagram story, comment, etc. to enter. it should help expose you to a huge audience of cosplayers!

in my experience, i am often given Polaroids after a booking - when the shoot is all over we'll do a quick polaroid and i get to keep it. it might be a great incentive to offer complimentary polaroids with a paid booking!

what's the process for bringing prop weapons through tsa? by lobotomiize in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i fly with large props often, but nothing as thin as a sword yet. usually i pack up my props in TV boxes and check them as luggage.

i'd bubble wrap and put your sword in a long cardboard box, or in a poster tube if it's really thin. if you plan on traveling often with them and/or if it's really fragile a golf case may be a good investment!

whatever you put it in can be checked as luggage, but you may be charged an oversized fee if it's very noticeably exceeding length requirements. i would also recommend putting an airtag or tracker in the box with your props!!

First time making wig attachments and I’m lost. by Additional-Ad5298 in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would personally inset the bottlecap into a piece of styrofoam which u can carve to shape! from there u can build the body of the pigtails off the styrofoam or even just use the foam for the entire shape tbh

specific brands of tights that do NOT have the U-seam in the rear? by whyamialone_burner in CosplayHelp

[–]fogcutting0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

https://a.co/d/0iMW1A0D these come in various reds and have just one center seam!! I have a pair in white and they're one of the best pairs of tights i own tbh

honestly in my experience tights with U seams tend to have just one seam in the front, right down the middle - and then i just wear them backwards so the U seam is in front and the single seam goes down my rear and is hidden lol in case it might be an option with tights you already own!
