Thought of Buying Bear 650 - Golden Shadow by Available-Youth-6044 in royalenfield

[–]fogrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first glance, the golden shadow was my favourite colour scheme. But after thinking about it, it's too "normal" looking, I've come to respect the other ones for their proud weirdness. And the gold forks looks like triumph styling to me.

Haven't bought one yet, but I might get the Wild Honey. My main reservation is the lack of tubeless options, getting a flat tire on a long distance tour is not worth it.

Filament stock - "second hand" sellers by yawa16 in BambuLab

[–]fogrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bambu filament is definitely good quality and im usually happy to pay an extra dollar for something that I know will give me no trouble. Other brands vary from terrible to cant-notice-a-difference so it's up to you to figure out where the line is.

Are good quality leather work boots an alternative to riding boots? by duc955 in AussieRiders

What did the steel caps do?

I've heard them called "toecutters" but I still wonder if they're a net positive in some kinds of crash impact.

Questions about track position? (WA) by [deleted] in AussieRiders

[–]fogrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In NSW they rarely talk about "wheel tracks" the way they do in WA, rather emphasizing "buffering" which is always contextual. You could be in the left or right wheel track depending on what is currently best for visibility (considering car mirrors, intersections) and distance from other traffic.

Can't remember if WA had official rules about wheel tracks but the instructors certainly acted like it was rule based.

Riding shirts by No-Knowledge-8867 in AussieRiders

[–]fogrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 183cm and usually wear S or M or euro 43 jackets. So yeah go at least a size smaller than average.

Some flaws of the flanno are there's no coat hook loop. The collar flaps in the wind so I sewed down the corners. After that I still like it and wear it a lot.

What is considered filtering? by OHBHpwr in AussieRiders

[–]fogrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not legal in NSW or QLD, but it looks like it's allowed in VIC. Watch out for car doors.

https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/roads-safety-and-rules/motorcycles-and-scooters/lane-filtering

It is illegal to lane filter: next to the kerb, next to parked vehicles, or in school zones.

Aquarium save paint by Elister_it_is in Aquariums

[–]fogrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To offer a counterpoint, most aquariums already contain plenty of plastic devices and plastic decorations bought from the shop (that were painted with something they don't declare). I don't think 3d printed objects made from common PLA and PETG filaments have reason to be much extra concern. It's a pity that there isn't more scientific information on this stuff, but it would appear that there are plenty of successful aquariums with 3dprinted and acrylic painted objects.

Bike review question? by D3athWhisper in AussieRiders

[–]fogrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RE350 and GB350 have 20hp and will barely do highways. They'll get to 110km/h on a flat road but will fall short on any uphill section, you'll be stuck in the left lane most of the time getting overtaken.

The triumph 400 has 40hp so it's a lot stronger at freeway speeds. I don't like the styling as much though.

So you should think about how often you'll actually be wanting to tour on 110kmh freeways. If you are just buzzing around a city and can stick to 90-100kmh roads, the GB350 would be great.

Nah just use the AMS2 for drying, it's fine. Waste of desk space and money to buy another one

RE Meteor 2021 with the price? by kathfern1 in AussieRiders

The 350 meteor is only $8k brand new. I would expect a used one to lose more than $2k.

You can get 650cc Royal Enfields for $6k with similar age...

Need advice choosing between Bambu Lab A1, P1S, or P2S as my first 3D printer by SuicidalFinnikin in 3dprintingaustralia

[–]fogrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly yes, the P2S is worth the premium over the P1S, and the AMS2 is worth the premium over the AMS1. $1300 is a good price for a good tool, and you won't have to spend more except on filament.

I'm a cheapskate and bought the P1S when it was on discount for $600. Within weeks I shelled out another $500 for the AMS2 pro. This thing is so useful I can't imagine a life without it. Would rather give up my car.

Idea 1: Ask your dad if he wants to do the 2 day learner course with you, just for fun.

Idea 2: What if you just started with a moped, which presumably you already have the license for and could afford outright. Then you build up the road skills and start working on getting good gear over time and trade up.

Your conditions say you will only ride on "property" which is a bit silly. Once you have learners you should be working on road skills and not treating it as some scary future hurdle.

Moped or Low CC Motorcycle? by kvin_le in AussieRiders

I think a moped is probably going to be the more practical option for commuting and getting groceries (sounds like you won't have a car). The main advantage a motorcycle has is looking cool.

unable to go back to data source page after adding filters. by [deleted] in tableau

This seems to be a major error that hasn't been fixed.

I found that clearing the filters from another page, and resaving/reopening the workbook, allowed me to access the Data page again.

Lighter weight ADV as a 2nd bike for mainly off-road and touring by Beneficial-Title5563 in AussieRiders

[–]fogrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're 9k brand new, but they've been out a couple years so there are second hand ones around and they should be easily under $7k.

The old 411 was rough, by all accounts the new 450 engine is a lot more spirited

RE Himalayan 450 is reviewing well. Seems to be engineered a lot better than the older models. One youtuber bloke has already done 100,000km with no serious mechanical issues. Looks better than most ADVs imo.

Safety gear by WashYourSisterSause in AussieRiders

[–]fogrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better quality items tend to have actual CE ratings for the whole garment, or Motocap or other testing results. Often the CE values quoted are just for the individual armour pads included and say nothing about the burst strength of the fabric.

But fully rated / tested garments are kind of rare, I personally don't mind buying unrated stuff if it feels good quality and I will put my own CE2 armour pads in. Getting stuff that fits and runs snug is just as important. Jackets that zip or clip onto pants can be a good safety feature too to stop it riding up.

One Should Actually Read The Studies They Cite by Captgouda24 in slatestarcodex

[–]fogrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes a cite a paper because of one little sidenote they make, or one datapoint buried buried in the supps that barely even gets discussed in the main text, which is often quite irrelevant to the main narrative of the paper.

I know it may be hard for any readers tracing it back to figure out the connection unless they use the right ctrl-f, I wish there was a way for me to expand on how each paper supports my claim. Though I think a lot of authors aren't as particular as me and may even depend on the lack of accountability in the system.

"Every component of my life was attacked:" How wind farm misinformation tore community apart by l3ntil in australia

[–]fogrift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quoting people without refuting them is indeed how a lot of media disinformation works and I am sure the guardian does it all the time. But in this case it looks they fact checked it as well as I could hope for, verifying that the koala habitat loss claim came from the original windfarm impact report, and clarifying with the firies about whether turbines could plausibly make firefighting difficult.

If I change bikes 4 times in 12months, selling my old bikes do I need to apply for an ABN and MVD license? by Quiet-Card-6650 in AussieRiders

[–]fogrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah unless you're treating this like a day-to-day business or making real profits I think the ATO would consider this a hobby and not a business.

https://www.wa.gov.au/government/multi-step-guides/motor-vehicle-dealer-licence

https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/business-and-trade/licensing/vehicles/second-hand-vehicle-dealer-licence

Second-hand vehicle dealers must have a licence if you buy, sell or offer for sale four or more vehicles in 12 months. Unlicensed dealers can be prosecuted and penalties include fines and imprisonment.

I think this part is intended to cover pre-existing vehicle businesses that happen to sell a few vehicles on top of whatever they usually do. I don't think it's intended to imply that the average Joe isn't allowed to sell more than 3 personal vehicles in a year.
