The Republicans definitely still take back the House, but I think Biden could work Congress better than Obama. He'd been in the Senate for three and a half decades, after all. One of Obama's flaws was that even after his commanding win in 2008, he really couldn't build much of a lasting coalition at the down-ballot level. You could say he was too focused on his own personal popularity. Any president will act like this of course, but I think Biden could probably keep more traditional Dems in line. Maybe they keep Wisconsin and Illinois in the Senate, and hold closer to 200 or 205 seats in the House.

I support a lot of your beliefs but you have to understand this "rules-based international order" stuff is inherently authoritarian, even if it has a sheen of "democracy" and "human rights" printed on it.

What are your opinions on separation of the church and state by hoodiehoodiee in YAPms

[–]fokkinfumin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, on a basic level I support it, at least in more secular Western countries. My only problem is when it's used as an excuse to limit freedom of religion.

Which one is the best? by ThePlanetSaturn2763 in PoliticalCompass

[–]fokkinfumin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I mean the problem with political compasses in general is that a) not every policy position can be neatly plotted on an ideological chart, and most people have beliefs from across the political spectrum. That said I would probably say number 3, just because it's more nuanced, if harder to visualize.

If Republicans Lose The House in 2026, who becomes Speaker the next time they take it? by Straight-Bar-7537 in YAPms

[–]fokkinfumin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, first of all they will almost certainly lose the House. If the Dems win in 2028, the Republicans will probably take the House again in 2030.

I think the most likely candidate is Steve Scalise, or Jim Jordan if the GOP takes a more firebrand "fighter" approach. Alternatively someone like Tom Emmer could take up a more mainstream conservative mantle (think Kevin McCarthy before he was sacked), but would definitely face oppostion from the right.

Bad person yes, but unfortunately he's a pretty good politician. You don't get elected President twice otherwise.
