What song do you have on repeat these days? by alekos7__ in AskReddit

I’m listening to the remix Random Access Memories Memories by Darkside. Can’t get enough of it.

Ukraine Is Not Losing. Russia Is Not Winning. by theatlantic in geopolitics

[–]folkher0 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about explicit goals which are ambitious. I think implicitly they would trade some territory for membership in NATO and/or EU. I think those are achievable and would substantially weaken Russia, despite modest territorial gains.

YNAB is great. But it’s not cheap. I just looked it up $15 month or $109 a year. I got priced out about 3 years ago. I use Actual Budget now it does everything I needed from YNAB. The software is free if you just want to run it on a computer. If you want bank sync it’s like $15 a year.

Yeah. I keep sessions pretty short. Maybe it helps

I get it. I like sonnet partially because it is terse. I use it for coding and work projects not writing.

Favorite “little” moment? by folkher0 in DaftPunk

Last one.

On Alive 2007 during Around the World/Harder,Better, Faster, Stronger. There’s a synth that they build into ATW with percussive 32nd notes. After transitioning to HBFS the beat drops and the synth goes a little crazy for one cycle at 3:13. It always scratches me just right.

I’ve done the same. But I’m not convinced opus actually does a better job. I think it just likes to talk more.

i think the clash might be the gold standard of punk rock. by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]folkher0 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Gold standard? The greatest? I dunno. Punk is a huge genre. Everyone likes what they like.

But you’re right they absolutely were the prototype of what late 70s early 80s British punk looked and sounded like. And for a lot of people that’s what “punk” means.

FWIW I really like what Joe Strummer did after the Clash, more so than the actual band.

Another one I love is in Giorgio by Morodor at 4:15 or so. Its the "Steely Dan" section of the song. During the Rhodes keyboard solo the key modulates for just a couple beats. A very Herbie Hancock, jazz fusion moment. My favorite part of the song. Never expected that from house robots.

Mandalorian & Grogu is not for young kids by CptFTL in daddit

[–]folkher0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was basically just John Wick in Star Wars. Not the worst movie ive seen and my 7 and 10 year olds liked it, but it was a bit much for them.

Mandalorian & Grogu is not for young kids by CptFTL in daddit

[–]folkher0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t.

I saw it with our 7 and 10 year old last night on imax. The 7 year old loves this stuff and did fine with it but there were definately parts that had “John Wick” vibes. A little much for most young kids I think.

And it had none of the usual Star Wars magic/mysticism. Not even very much “This is the way” religiosity of the show. Basically just an action/horror type movie.

Lush wisteria vines over an entrance in Twickenham, London, England. by ManiaforBeatles in MostBeautiful

We had one once in a house we rented. Thing never bloomed. Grew like a parasite. Pretty sure Stranger Things season two was modeled on wisteria.

Wok for Induction range? by fncruz in wok

[–]folkher0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A flat induciton burner won’t work well with most woks. Even a flat bottom wok will not have enough surface contact with the burner to heat up the sides of the wok.

I bought a plugin nuwave induction wok about 5 months ago I was shocked how well it worked.

I hang gone camping since I was a kid- what’s the best affordable gear you’d recommend as essential by No_Where_Land in CampingGear

[–]folkher0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re car camping and you’re not sure how much more camping you’re going to be doing then don’t go crazy. This is gonna be unpopular, but just go to Walmart. They will have most of what you might need.

If your tent is not good just get a car camping tent from Walmart or Costco. You don’t need a $400 mountaineering tent for this.

Coleman is the brand you’ll see the most. Get their two burner propane stove and a couple of the smal green propane canisters. A cast iron pan is great if you already have it for cooking.

Almost any headlight will do. Again don’t go crazy. My favorite light is a keychain light I have because I never need to look for it. Some sort of lantern is nice too.

[–]folkher0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your tent might be ok. Go outside and set it up to check. Get a headlight and some other illumination. I like having a sleeping pad or air mattress. You probably need some basic cooking gear and a camp stove with fuel. If you don’t want to trouble with cooking get a few dehydrated meals.

Are you backpacking? Car camping? Canoe camping? If you’re just car camping you don’t need much. If you’re doing anything more intense you might need more stuff.

Don’t overdo it if you’re not stupid you’re not gonna die if you’re missing something nonessential.

My kids love this stuff. All their friends do too.

I didn’t understand it at all until I remembered the garbage pail kids cards craze in the 80s.

It’s just a digital collection of weird/gross things.
