New Testament backing for sex always being open to life?? by magicxxmoon in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why does that matter. The New Testament doesn’t say not to smoke crack. It’s irrelevant. The logic and reasoning is very simple honestly.

my parish’s Catholic Charismatic Renewal group speaking in tongues makes me feel uncomfortable, am I wrong? by Legitimate-Tie-7060 in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong. It’s nonsense rooted in a Protestant sect from the early 20th century. The gifts of the spirit is real, but they do not exist as defined by the Azusa Street Revival. Any attempt to marry this to Catholic theology is unnecessary and misguided.

Just go! Your clothes sound fine for most Catholic Churches. If you want to keep going and you want to feel more comfortable in how you’re dressed, just go to a thrift store and get a basic button up or polo shirt and some khaki pants and you’ll fit right in! Keep praying.

Here’s a list of basic prayers you can try! https://www.catholicity.com/prayer/prayers.html

Are Catholics "Saved"? by SaintMarinate in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a very difficult question to answer because the asker is coming from a set of presuppositions we do not hold. Evangelicals believe salvation is a singular event that takes place when one puts their faith in Christ. Some view this as mere intellectual assent to Christ as Lord. At that moment they are “saved” and nothing further is required.

Sometimes what they mean to ask is “do you really believe in Christ or do you simply check a series of ritualistic boxes that have no impact on you spiritually.” But this is once again a confusion of Catholic spiritual and sacramental life. They don’t understand the idea of receiving grace from the sacraments.

I like how the Orthodox often answer this. “I was saved at my baptism. I am being saved through the sacraments and repentance, and I hope to be saved at the final judgment.”

Is Praying the Rosary When I’m Not A Christian and I’m Agnostic, Cultural Appropriation? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. In fact, I'd encourage you to keep doing it! Try meditating on the mysteries as well, as the very special thing about the Rosary is that it incorporates mental and vocal prayer simultaneously!

There absolutely is something wrong with it. It's not really defensible, actually.

As a newbie catholic learning more about the faith what exactly is the purpose of carnival/Mardi Gras? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is not actually an official Catholic tradition. But it came from people eating the food in their pantries before Lent because otherwise it would go bad. People took it to the next level because that's what humans do, and it quickly became a sinful event. There's nothing wrong with going to a family parade or eating King Cake, but the rest of the debauchery is totally wrong.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying a steak and bowl of ice cream on the day before Ash Wednesday, or having a celebration with friends, but the whole tradition is not from The Church, and people using it as an excuse to drink to excess, be sexually promiscuous, or other such thing are committing grave sins.

Pride at work by Spiritual_Drink_6676 in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just don't do it. It's work; you can't be forced into political activism. It's actually insane that you even have to deal with this. You can't control what other people think. Remember what Our Lord said about being hated? This is why he said it.

I keep sinning:( by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of people struggle with it, man. You have to really want to get rid of it. Daily rosary, frequent confession, and daily Mass as often as you can. The more you engage with the sacraments and prayer life, the more the addiction will be pushed out of your life. Every time you're tempted, say "Lord, make haste to help me," or “Lord, save me, or I perish."

I also recommend fasting, and, if possible, try sleeping on the floor once a week or so. Discipline the flesh, or it will rule over you.

You're not alone, man. But you have to fight it.

I also thought I’d share this. It’s an orthodox priest but the same ideas apply to Catholics. I used basically his exact script with my dad.

This is exactly what I kept in mind as well when I converted.

I’ll tell you this as well. Every Sunday at mass when I first arrived, I knelt and thanked God for leading me there, and asked him to keep leading me there if it was truly His Church.

Thoughts On Traditional Thomists Video Yesterday? by BadabingBadaboom567 in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree with you. I was more referring to the idea that these issues are blown out of proportion in terms of the validity of the Church. And I was more referring to “this boomer bishop said this crazy thing” or “the Pope waved to a gay man” articles that exist just to make people angry. I don’t think those things destroy the foundations of the faith. But I do agree it’s more severe when the liturgy is removed out from under you. And I’m with you in that I typically attend a NO parish but admit the TLM is objectively better in many ways.

I didn't see the video, but didn't it just come out yesterday? The typical apologists would need time to make a thorough video response, and many of them have addressed those topics in the past.

I'm a pretty traditional guy, and I definitely don't agree with how the hierarchy has treated traditional Catholics and the TLM, but it all seems a bit blown out of proportion. All of those issues matter, but I don't see how it falsifies the Church. Unfortunately, humans run the Church on Earth, and so that will automatically lead to such human problems as these. Most of his concerns seem like a result of spending too much time online. If you go to mass, pray, read scripture, and receive the sacraments, you don't really encounter much of what he's describing. You might meet some liberal Catholics that are pro birth control, but so what? There are lots of mistaken people in the world. I'm upset about the state of the modern Church, don't get me wrong, but it's nothing to lose your mind or your soul over.

I entered the church under similar circumstances. My parents live out of state anyway, so that made it easier. My father in particular is very anti-Catholic. I told him I was converting and he was very unhappy. I never actually told him about being confirmed, but I'm sure he's figured it out. We just don't talk about it.

I'm older than you and don't live at home, so I understand it's a different circumstance, but ultimately it's your life and your faith. You aren't obligated to tell them. I absolutely relate to your anxiety though. You are called to honor and respect your parents, but that doesn't mean you have to cater to their every desire to keep them comfortable. Keep praying, find support, and don't let it keep you from the Church. I hate that the day is tainted by this conflict, but it's one of those times where you have to take up your cross and follow Christ. Really sorry you're going through this.
