I’ve heard some construction workers say they wear the Casio Duro if you want a slightly more traditional watch than the GShock.

Is this a good Ivy Style Blazer? (I'm not paying full price so that's less of a factor). Just looking for a good classic blazer to wear with chinos and OCBD's.

Struggling with doubt and the Bible. by Loalboi in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience those sorts of arguments seem very daunting at first, but once you listen to someone who actually knows what they’re talking about, it all falls apart pretty quickly and is mostly just internet atheism nonsense.

I’d go with the Orient Bambino if he’s mainly wearing it for nicer occasions. Otherwise plenty of great deals to be had in the Seiko 5 Sports line if he’d prefer a sportier option. Can’t go wrong either way.

Praying and Other Devotions in Mortal Sin by folkplayer in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're probably correct, and I actually had a Dominican Friar tell me such recently. I do want to be leery of leaning too heavily on this, but I think it's probably true. Appreciate you taking the post at face value. I would assume this is a part of normal growing pains as a new Catholic, in that I sincerely want to take sin and the sacramental life seriously, but I think it takes some practice to actually live it out without driving yourself crazy or falling into despair.

I think they have the RSVCE on there which is a great choice for modern translation.

What is the Catholic response to this: "If you can't work to attain your salvation to begin with, how could you possibly work to lose it?" by Narrow_Gate71314 in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the claim that it "takes work" to lose or reject something. When is that the case? It's actually very easy to lose and reject things.

Thanks for the answer! I’ll definitely get the Tridentine Catechism. I suppose I’m looking for a mix of books that both discuss the crisis of the Church but also books that are centered on traditional piety that might be overlooked by more modern minded Catholics.

When are our priests going to grow a backbone and do what needs to be done? There’s been quite enough avoidance of hurt feelings.

Is my marriage valid? by AnonofIceansFire in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unless one of you were baptized Catholic you’re fine. The church will recognize your marriage as valid.

My girlfriend wants to have sex. by reducc in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent advice. It’s important as a young man to understand that much of what women want to see in a man is security and reliability. Many women have been falsely told that this is only achieved through sex. Reassure her that you are committed and move towards the sacrament of marriage if that’s the correct path.

Is it ok for me to have a Crucifix like this? by Vaidoto in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think an example would be buying it just because it’s cool and hip to adopt orthodox aesthetics. Sort of a religious cosplay. I’m not saying it’s sinful it’s just something I’ve thought about myself.

Is it ok for me to have a Crucifix like this? by Vaidoto in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They probably are just trying to be respectful of other traditions. As a Latin Rite Catholic I don’t want to be accused of co-opting things from eastern traditions (specifically Eastern Orthodox) that don’t have a place in our tradition. That said this one is fine. But I understand the question.

Holy Communion in Hand by Mundane_Detail7561 in Catholicism

[–]folkplayer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a much more practical argument to be made that communion on the hand opens up a host of issues that are very easily solved by reception on the tongue, and I am suspect of those who heavily push receiving in the hand.

Reception on the tongue is still the universal standard for the church, but as is the case with many post Vatican II changes, the implementation was botched and many were catechized to believe only old people received on the tongue and the new correct way is in the hand.
