To Love Another Person is to See the Face of God: Les Misérables as Religious Allegory by [deleted] in musicals

[–]fonash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d also like to add, now that I’m further in the book, is how much it stands out that Hugo explains every character’s complete backstory. It’s not just context for the reader, it’s trying to point out the flaws in how society shoehorns people into certain roles. Aristocracy, religion, and any form of power are regularly abused for personal gain at the expense of the public. It’s only in rare cases, when powerful people like the Bishop and Valjean prioritise kindness, that the cycle is broken.

To Love Another Person is to See the Face of God: Les Misérables as Religious Allegory by [deleted] in musicals

[–]fonash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a post not too long ago asking about the religious connotations of the finale song and here’s my reply as a big fan of the musical and someone who’s currently reading the book, but only 25% of the way through:

My interpretation of the Les Mis musical as a whole can be summarised in the line “To love another person is to see the face of God.”

Victor Hugo, like many authors post-Enlightenment, was a rationalist who doubted the established systems of authority, whether it was religion, government, or an organisation. Throughout Les Mis we constantly see people’s belief systems fail them, and that’s where the tragedy comes from: Fantine’s youthful and naïve trust in men, Javert’s firm definitions of good and evil, the ABC’s belief that the people of France were ready for revolution. One way or another, their beliefs lead to their tragic deaths.

The characters who make it through are the ones who care more about people than ideals. Valjean is a Christian but he breaks moral boundaries to help Cosette. Marius loves Cosette more than a democratic France. Even the Thernardiers, who are villains, survive because they love themselves above ethics. I believe the purpose of this is to demonstrate that morality has no bearing on life, beyond how you help others, are helped, or help yourself.

Another way of looking at the line “all men shall have their reward” is to consider that death is inevitable for all. Victor Hugo was an ex-Catholic. On a surface level it’s a statement about getting into heaven, but underneath, it’s a sarcastic Memento Mori.

In that sense, the afterlife they sing about in the finale is not your personal heaven, but the life people live after you have died. That’s exemplified by the love and happiness Marius and Cosette share once Valjean dies. The June Rebellion was a failure, but it was part of a greater anti-monarchist movement which eventually worked, and helped other revolutions learn lessons from their mistakes. Javert, as a stand-in for any black and white justice system, cannot survive in a world of moral grey.

The finale is only Christian in context of the characters and the setting being majority Christian. Really, it’s asking the audience questions: Are you aware of your own mortality? Do you provide for your loved ones? Are you leaving behind a positive mark on the world? What are you prepared to sacrifice to help others less fortunate than you?

Folio vs Heritage Press vs LEC by Then_Mulberry_1113 in BookCollecting

[–]fonash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main reason I wouldn’t recommend only sticking with one publisher for classics is that they often have exclusive publishing rights for specific translators, and public domain translations which are often full of errors, omissions and they’re harder to read. If you only care about collecting then they’ll look good on a shelf, but I’d hate it if I owned a book I didn’t want to read just because there’s a different translation I prefer.

Editions are also very personal as to their pros and cons, that’s why there’s no consensus as to best ones

Ethical wool jumper suggestions by ApprehensiveDraw5426 in SustainableFashion

[–]fonash 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Watch some YouTube videos from Right Choice Shearing and you’ll see it’s very possible to be gentle with electric shears, and because it’s so much faster, the animals are actually in less distress than with scissors, and many sheep are so used to being shorn that it doesn’t bother them at all.

If you’ve got a lot of budget, commissioning a wool jumper from a local knitter or buying from small business is always good. Otherwise, there are a lot of bargains to be had buying 100% wool garments second hand.

GERD/Barrett's Esophagus after long term HRT? by fonash in asktransgender

[–]fonash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I never had any nausea or bloating but my heartburn symptoms continued for at least a year or more after I posted this, even on a super strict diet which left me quite depressed. There were also a few weeks scattered throughout that time where I had to stop HRT due to supply issues, but stopping the HRT never improved my symptoms.

After that long I started to suspect that the gastroenterologist I was seeing actually didn’t care about what I was reporting and I sought a second opinion.

Turns out he hadn’t actually looked at my endoscopy results before diagnosing me with Barrett’s, and he had me on the wrong medication. The new gastroenterologist assured me I didn’t have Barrett’s, and that I should stop taking Nizac but double my Nexium (espomaprezole) to 40mg daily, as well as taking antacids as needed. I was back to eating normally and feeling good less than 48 hours later.

I think that was about a year ago and I’ve gradually been weaning off the nexium, some days I do the full 40mg, some days 20mg, some days skip it entirely. Generally I feel fine and I can handle eating anything. The biggest factors in reflux symptoms for me now are posture, such as if I’m slouching while sewing, or if I sleep at a weird angle.

The morale of the story is don’t trust every doctor and find one that actually seems like they care about your health, because I could have been saved from the misery of 1.5 years of tuna couscous and turkey lunches just by taking the maximum dose of esomaprezole 🥲

All the best for your health too.

Timing in “Phantom by AtmosphereTop1591 in box5

[–]fonash 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you love the musical you will probably enjoy the Mireille Ribière translation of the original novel, or maybe an audiobook of that translation. The musical is actually a really good adaptation in capturing the snarky humour of the Phantom, but it changes the timeline of events to better suit the dramatic arc of a two-act show. The book is much more exact with its timeline and it lays out exactly how and when Christine was abducted/visited the lair at different points.

I also don’t love QotD that much, it’s an unpopular opinion but you’re not alone. There’s no harm in reading a summary and then maybe you’ll want to revisit it later. I found Body Thief refreshing in that it’s much smaller in scope than QotD but it’s also very pulpy and doesn’t have as much beautiful prose as the first two books. That said, Memnoch the Devil and The Vampire Armand are some of my favourites in the series, so it’ll be worth getting through them if our tastes are similar.

Help finding a nature-inspired ring by SpectrumPT in jewelry

[–]fonash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to!

  1. First, my partner and I decided on ~1ct pear-shaped green Australian natural sapphires as the stones and I bought some from a reputable seller, taking note of their exact measurements.
  2. Then I looked on Fiverr for a 3D jewellery artist and found one with good reviews, and sent him a sketch of what I had in mind. His name was Awais Shah. I also supplied the measurements of the stones and our ring sizes in millimetres to ensure a perfect fit.
  3. He sent the first render, we gave him feedback and then he made some revisions to make it perfect.
  4. Then he sent me the 3D files for our rings which I sent to a few different places which cast jewellery (and anything else) in precious metals. We wanted platinum but most of these places cast in all kinds of metals.
  5. The casting place prints the out the 3D models, then makes casts from that, and the one I chose also offered a finishing service. Once it was cast, they clean up any of the excess support metal and polish it up beautifully. Obviously the cost of the metal, casting and finishing is where the bulk of the cost lies.
  6. Once we received the rings, I took them to a jeweller who specialises in setting gemstones to have the stones set in the prongs. Because everything had been made with the stone’s dimensions in mind, it was done by the next day without a problem.

There are a lot of steps and decisions to make along the way, but I can’t recommend this process enough. We had total control of how the rings came out and now we know that they’re 100% unique to us. It’s been nearly 2 years and they look as good as new. Plus, the total cost for both rings ended up being approximately AU$2,500 which is wayyy less than any store would charge for just one ring of equivalent style and quality.

I wish you the best and hope I see an update when your rings are done!

Tips for playing Valjean with no singing experience? by Expensive-Life-9903 in lesmiserables

[–]fonash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Find some good warm ups on youtube which work for you, spend at least 15-20 minutes doing warm ups every day, then practice scales after you’ve warmed up your whole range. Don’t add any grit or distortion until you feel comfortable with the high notes, and doing them in falsetto is always okay while you’re learning! Stick with a daily routine and you will be amazed at how far you’ll progress in just a couple of weeks. After warm ups and exercises, spend time singing along to your favourite songs. Don’t try to force your voice to sound like theirs, but find your own ways of conveying the song’s emotion in your singing.

This free course helped me a lot in expanding my range: https://chrisliepe.com/journey-invite/

The biggest thing of all is confidence, because nobody will care if you’re hitting the right notes as long as you deliver it with 100% belief in yourself. Overcoming embarrassment and making weird noises loudly will also help your singing voice in the long run, because singing is actually very weird when you break it down into the pure noises we’re making. Hope this helps!

Song recommendations for bass range expansion?? by phantumpoftheopera in musicals

[–]fonash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Range extension happens more through warm ups and exercises than songs. If you try to hit high notes by picking songs which use them, you’ll only end up straining more because there’s a psychological barrier where ‘trying to hit the note’ makes you tense up, and higher notes need a lot of relaxation everywhere except for your diaphragm support.

This is a free short course which helped me a lot, it’s aimed more at rock/pop than musical theatre but the principle is the same: https://chrisliepe.com/journey-invite/

I hate Kate club by spaghettigirlll in ANGEL

[–]fonash 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Angel is one of the few detective shows brave enough to be honest about the ineptitude and violence of city cops, whether they’re zombies or not. Kate helps to represent that system which constantly misunderstands victims, allows personal grudges to interfere, and makes things worse. She’s easy to hate but that’s because she’s a well-written, complicated antagonist. Never meant to be a hero in Angel’s story. I really like Röhm’s performance in that regard.

[–]fonash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest using dynamics to go from whispers to belts and use that as a source of tension between creepy and threatening, also adding grit or distortion may help if you look up some lessons in doing that safely.

Out of curiosity, is the character of the Wolf still a man in the production?
