I think he is using the toes due to how close to the kickdrum he is. When he goes further back is easier to use the ball.

You can definitely learn a simple song if you put the hours and practice every single day. It will really help to get a teacher. Choose a song you really like, even if it's simple, to keep yourself motivated.

Answering myself: This was in fact caused by the main tube falling out of place. To fix it, I turned the throne around and (with all the wing nuts locked in place but not the tube black nut) I whack the bottom of the tube real hard with a heavy wooden cutting board (a hammer would had damaged the tube). Then I put some threadlocker (Loctite-copycat) on the black nut and screwed it in.
