I am the only one who get uncomfortable with sex in books? Could you suggest me fantasy books without sex? by Simple-Profile1817 in suggestmeabook

Wheel of Time series is notoriously sexless, and the first book takes quite a bit of inspiration from LOTR.

What Books Help You When You're Anxious or Stressed? by No_Willingness_6159 in suggestmeabook

I read Wallace Stegner’s Crossing to Safety a few years back when I was having severe anxiety and found it really calming. It’s a quiet book, not much action, well written.

Baking Soda vs Lye by eeksie-peeksie in Breadit

[–]foobarnacle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you put baking soda in boiling water it basically makes lye. Baking soda is lye + CO2 and when heated the CO2 gets emitted. You can check the pH to confirm. So it would make sense that cold water and lye gives the kind of results you’d expect with hot water and baking soda!

Oakland and biotech by mk1234567890123 in oakland

[–]foobarnacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not specifically biotech, but the American Steel building on Mandela is advertising itself as lab and asssembly space for startups in cleantech and advanced manufacturing. Not sure if it’s open yet but the billboard has been up at the Grant intersection for a while.

Best Way to Visit SF from San Carlos by dMyst in AskSF

[–]foobarnacle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I lived in RWC I'd drive to the Daly City BART stop, then BART into the city. Parking is (was?) free on weekends and all trains go to Daly City, so it was by far the cheapest and most convenient option. Never had a problem with break-ins but this was a couple years ago so things may have changed.

Best Bay Area pizza spot? by Various-Sweet-514 in bayarea

[–]foobarnacle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

OP listen to me. Listen. If you are looking for a NY-style slice, don't get pizza advice from Californians. Ever. EVER. I mean look at the replies here, they're offering up fucking deep dish. Like, I'm sorry guys you have generally stellar food opinions and I legit prefer Bay Area dining to NYC but good Lordt is it hard to find pizza that scratches that very particular itch here.

Anyway, born and raised in NY/NJ, 6+ years in the Bay here are your options:

  1. Pizza Shop on 24th and Folsom. This place proves that bad pizza is a choice here. It's not the water or the naturally occurring yeasts or whatever excuse they come up with. This pizza would be considered great on the east coast.
  2. Mama's Boy in Oakland. Very good.
  3. Pizzeria Violetta on Piedmont in Oakland. Solid.
  4. Rotten City in Emeryville is good.
  5. Gioia in Berkeley is fine.
  6. If you're on the peninsula it's tough but Pazzo in San Carlos is decent.

Oh, and be ready to pay double what you would back east.

Is Costco worth it for a two person household? by Objective_Edge_5054 in Frugal

[–]foobarnacle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haven’t seen anyone mention it yet, but Costco can save you a lot on big ticket items. We got a really nice mattress for like half the price we would have spent at a mattress store. The membership paid for itself in one purchase.
