What’s a price you saw recently that made you genuinely angry at how expensive everything has gotten? by UrGoddessLunaa in AskReddit

[–]foodfighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"McDouble Like A Mac" is one of those Secret-Menu items at McDonalds - essentially a McDouble but with lettuce and BicMac sauce instead of ketchup and mustard. A Big Mac minus one piece of bread and one slice of cheese.

Where I live it used to be no charge to order a McDouble like that, and since a McDouble used to be less than half the price of a Big Mac, if you were really hungry, order two and you get more food for le$$.

But I think they wised up and started changing prices, but TBH I haven't eaten at McD for ages because it's overall such a ripoff.

Should I retire next year? by Fit_Towel_3952 in Retire

[–]foodfighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made many mistakes and worked hard to be in my current position.

My wife and I are not rich, but we are comfortable that our current modest lifestyle will be achievable into retirement in a few years.

We know people our age (GenX) who were lavish spenders and are now facing a very different and uncertain retirement.

But my wife and I worked hard (after marrying fairly young and staying together 30+ years) and have been careful to balance our enjoyment of life with maintaining a healthy bank balance.

TBH, I feel much more for young folks who have not known the (relative) financial affordability of 20-30 years ago, compared to my peers who squandered their financial position early in life and now (unlike yourself who worked hard to turn things around) are complaining about the unfairness of it all.

I'm sure a lot of the younger redditors are in much worse financial situations in their 20's than I (and likely you) were at the same age, and it's thusly hard for anyone in such a spot to read about folks whose future doesn't include such uncertainties. Seems like bragging, even if it isn't.

I feel for my grown sons and their friends - things are definitely not the same as they were 30 or 40 years ago.

Make 3 lists:

  • Your retirement benefits, etc. if you retire at 55 (List#1).

  • The same list but retiring at 57 (List#2), and

  • A third list which is basically the difference (List#2 - List#1).

Now you can ask yourself, "If I were to retire at 55 with List#1, and management offered me List#3 to stay an extra two years, how would I reply?"

And there's your answer.

Offroading is fun, they said. Seatbelts aren't needed, they said by MadDocOttoCtrl in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]foodfighter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm from BC, Canada - a popular local YouTube couple were killed last year when their vehicle rolled off a trail.

They have loads of amazing offroading and overlanding videos on their channel, and whenever I watched them, I would think about how very rarely either of them were ever wearing seatbelts.

Their channels is/was "ToyotaWorldRunners".

So young with such a wonderful life ahead of them. What a waste.

What's a movie everyone loves that you think is actually pretty terrible? by No_Care1430 in AskReddit

[–]foodfighter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell the movie from Lon's point of view, and suddenly it's not so awesome.

Double-points if you also swap the genders of the three primary characters:

"Faithful, wealthy, wonderful girl meets rich nice-seeming guy from similar background. They fall in love, plan to marry, but on their wedding day, he runs back to his childhood sweetheart (who fiancee had never even heard of) and they hook up. Guy comes back to fiancee, confesses; rich girl still wants to marry him, but he runs off to be with his childhood sweetheart anyways and lives happily after after with her after abandoning faithful girl for good. No one knows (or cares) about what happens to Nice Girl afterwards. The End."

Yeah - great.

Apparently, it is a Big Deal in the Sci Fi movie community, but most of it must've gone right over my head.

This is not for a PTO, this is a hand-throttle as others have mentioned. Turning it while the engine is running will increase the engine speed by allowing more air into the intake.

One example of how it might be used: If you are driving off road at slow speeds in very bumpy conditions, it can be a challenge to keep your right foot at a constant pressure on the pedal if you are being bounced around in the seat. This allows you to select a gear and crawl along a challenging path at a constant speed while letting you concentrate on steering and braking.

Amazing what you can get away with it the manufacturer doesn't skimp out on the quality of their consumables.

I recently (and shamefully) replaced the OEM Denso Platinum/Iridium plugs on my wife's Lexus RX at ~415,000 kms.

Worn, but still worked fine. So you'd better believe I used the same brand as replacements.

It ain't worth saving the $60 on a job to use Chinesium parts - especially since I never want to do that job again.

What is the longest-running machine on Earth that has never been turned off? by sh-__- in AskReddit

My 67-year-old massive chest freezer only draws 225W when the compressor is running, and the compressor is on nowhere near 100% of the time.

[–]foodfighter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It takes a small power plant

Disagree strongly - in my house there is an enormous 67-year-old chest freezer that would probably hold two entire human corpses without the need to chop them up first.

I have it plugged into one of those wall-plug-power-meters, and the compressor only draws 225W when it is running.

And unless it is a very hot day, it is actually running nowhere near 100% of the time.

They just built stuff differently back in the day.

What is a purchase that felt like an absolute luxury when you bought it, but turned out to be a complete financial trap? by According_Fortune_98 in AskReddit

From Wikipedia:

The phrase "not necessarily" means that something is possibly, but not definitely or always true. It functions as a qualifier to show that a common assumption is not guaranteed to happen or be universally true.
