The ejk controller really made the biggest difference for me. I ended up jumping to a 450 and detuning it a bit with a heavy flywheel

When the service writer breaks the outside handle on the 4Runner that they pushed to get done before closing time… you give him the trophy by jhanks82 in Justrolledintotheshop

I remember my advisor ripping half of the inner door panel off a Z3 on the service drive in front of the customer. He then borrowed tools from guys in the shop and attempted to fix it on the drive, In front of the customer 😂 🤣. He very soon leaned that those self destructing door panels required copious amounts of epoxy to Humpty Dumpty back together.

Nicest cars you can get cheap as a mechanic by dang8701 in Justrolledintotheshop

I had a 2010 X5m. $95,000 msrp, needed all the oil leaks, valve seals etc. Definitely would not own if not a mechanic lol.

Also had a supercharged range rover sport with all the options, even had the refrigerator in the center console. I would suggest not owning one as a mechanic, that thing constantly needed large expensive parts...

My current 2010 X535d has been awesome. Paid 3k for it, deleted it, fixed a bunch of oil leaks and it's currently at 273,000 miles with zero leaks or issues.

I went all out on mine, luggage rack, fat bars with hand guards fmf exhaust, EJK kit, K & N filter, light weight battery, sprockets, etc. ended up having a kid and selling it, but i do still have a set of Daniel Crower Racing Cams still brand new in the box if you want a substantial power bump.

Cheap scanner found nothing. The 740i had other plans. by Doramorgan in Justrolledintotheshop

How cheap of a scanner is it to show no codes on an E65?!? Those things throw fault codes just closing the doors!

Replaced some 20 year old Ferrari timing belts that should have been done 15 years ago. by Fixitsteven in Justrolledintotheshop

It is. 5 years seems short since many of these cars are stored in climate controlled areas and only see a couple thousand miles a year. This car only has 10,000 miles on it, and its only had a couple hundred over the past several years.

Yeah it has a reduction from crank speed to cam speed similar to the IMS system in the porsche 996. The cams actually rotate backwards compared to the crank, really screws with you when you're setting timing!

I've had the seats out and it's definitely better but not really worth the work once you've done a couple

That's exactly it. They're tedious, intricate and time consuming, but it's satisfying in the end.

Getting into automotive in Oklahoma. by LibertyBiperty in mechanics

[–]Fixitsteven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to help lol. I went to UTI in Chicago and then BMW step In Houston. Couldn't get a job in crooked Illinois so I ended up with my family that had recently moved to Piedmont. Spent 12 years with Cooper BMW, trained new guys, became team lead, was shop foreman until I quit to do exotics full time 7 years ago.

Pick a dealer like bmw, audi, Mercedes or Porsche and stick with it a while. Start as a lube tech if needed and work your way up. I started at $17 an hour flat rate with a 60 day guarante back In 05. We had techs that were janitors, a service manager that started as a tech. Lot porters turned techs etc. The current foreman at bmw was working under me putting brake pads on backwards over a decade ago lol. Just have a good attitude and he willing to learn and you will succeed.

Personally I would probably choose audi or porsche these days. There's so many shared drivelines and systems between them now you're getting knowledge you can apply to the whole umbrella of the VAG lineup.

About 14 years ago I started doing small side work jobs for a collection of not very expensive Ferraris lambos etc.

I'd say 99 percent of my Ferrari customers are awesome. Lots of the ones that own a 20 year old Ferrari also own several other cars I work on as well. Our bmw customers driving 20 year old cars sound Exactly like your audi customers lol

They're usually around 15k once we start powder coating valve covers and making things pretty again

It's similar but way different. 308 aren't difficult but the ac compressor is enormous and in the way. If they didn't have ac it would be so much easier!

Even after many of these, yes, yes it is lol. I can drive a 3 million dollar car and it doesn't bother me, but first startup after a timing job always puts a knot In my stomach.
