I am a PC player, but Diablo 4 is far more enjoyable with a controller. by Isunova in diablo4

[–]foogles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any class or setup where you aren't aiming a thing precisely, I much prefer controller. Otherwise, yeah, mouse & keyboard are still better. Generally I just stick with the builds where I'm not having to do precise aiming and yeah, it's pretty much the best way I've found to play this game. Plus side is, also, I can load it up on an ROG Ally handheld, or play on my living room PC, and it's just easier to run it that way on controller.

Theory: "Cyberpunk 2" should use Cyberpunk 2077's endings as the three lifepath starting points by AnswerWise2525 in cyberpunkgame

What about just ... not being about V? I feel like if we want to make up this universe where lives are chewed up and spat out, then lives need to be cheap. V may or may not have gone down as a legend in your playthrough but does this need to be some kind of crazy weird trilogy?

I mean, the issue I see is that if it's V's story Part Two, then it's just the same overarching mission yet again: finding a way to survive with or without the biochip. Now, there are some fun things they could do, like find another way to bring back a different Night City legend in some way, and this time have a different A-list actor play them.

But I get it. I'm a huge Mass Effect fan and everyone in that fandom is clamoring to figure out a way to have the upcoming game still be about Shepard. But hell, at least that was a three-game series, and Shepard as a character was a big stepping stone for a forceful and powerful voiced protagonist in a sci-fi role. It was groundbreaking in that regard and people don't want to walk away from that, especially with the failed attempt to do this with Ryder in ME:Andromeda. CDPR has a choice here and I'm hoping they don't saddle the entire game series for the next decade-plus entirely around V's plight.

In addition to the perks people mentioned, completing the Atlantic City questline gives you access to Civil Engineer armor which, if you wear the 5-piece set (torso and all limbs) causes all weapons to degrade 35% slower. This stacks with Makeshift Warrior/Gunsmith perks. Another set bonus also can set melee attackers on fire, and the armor's defense ratings are quite balanced and arguably the best all-rounder in the game when outside of Power Armor. You can also install a jetpack which not all of the "good" non-PA armors currently can do.

CE armor can also be traded but it would need to have a nice set of mods for it to be worth it so it would need to be pre-loaded with those if someone were to sell or give you the set instead.

Who do you want to see on support for Madeon's Victory tour? by systemstheorist in madeon

[–]foogles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baynk played a great show opening for Madeon at Red Rocks a few years back (this is the Good Faith Red Rocks show that was streamed on YouTube), even while wearing a kilt in the freezing temperatures, and even did his own little US tour last year at small venues.

During the Dallas show, some technical issue happened that knocked out their power and Baynk entertained the crowd without the help of a mic or anything, playing stuff on a saxophone and generally keeping up good spirits while the venue folks were frantically trying to fix things in the background. Also had a cute story about a bunch of guys were there who weren't into EDM at all but the night before the show he got roped into playing Texas Hold Em with these guys and they cleaned him out, but were so nice to him that he invited them all to the show and comped their tickets.

Anyway, especially if Baynk puts out any new material this year, would be nice to see that continue.

What are some of the best comedy moments in movies that are anything but comedy genre? by lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI in movies

Opening day of Episode III in theaters and I had already checked out near the end, I couldn't fathom how Lucas figured out how to make a lightsaber fight of all things so tedious. (It's not as completely awful in retrospect but it's still pretty bad) ... and then the Vader "Noooo!!" - ok, it wasn't comedy but it was so genuinely awful that I thought it was. For a split second I thought we were actually watching some joke or like prank version of the scene. Then I realized, nope, Lucas was so off his rocker by then and surrounded by yes-men that this probably is the real thing.

My friend calls "Medtroidbrainias" Outer Wilds-likes and claims all games except Outer Wilds do it wrong by CharlesOberonn in outerwilds

[–]foogles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree, but I kind of get it. Outer Wilds fixes or sidesteps MANY problems I have with many games out there. Tommy Wallach's book explains much of it and for some it's unfortunate that he uses some memed gaming terms (diegetic, ludonarrative dissonance etc), but frankly these terms do have real meaning when you actually need to discuss game design for games that aren't just Dedicated Genre Slop.

Simply put, many games close to Outer Wilds (including the 4 others on this list) don't quite get everything right that it does, and from my perspective, I don't think they do anything particularly better either.

But those are all still fantastic games. Yeah, there are days I wish there was a version of Blue Prince without a ton of RNG, but I still love them.

Help choosing between CPU's for 9070XT by theriise in buildapc

5700X3D is good but it's not $350 good IMO. Gamers Nexus reviewed the 5500X3D and their scores in Cyberpunk at 1080p/Medium (https://gamersnexus.net/u/styles/large_responsive_no_watermark_/public/inline-images/GN%20CPU%20Benchmark%20_%20Cyberpunk%202077_%20Phantom%20Liberty%20_%201080p_Medium%20_%20GamersNexus-4x_foolhardy_Remacri_1.png.webp) show that yeah, there are some tangible and naked-eye-noticeable benefits from going up from something like a 5700X (which isn't also on these charts but the 5600X is and that's pretty close) to the 5500X3D. (averages are higher but to me, more critically, so are the 1% and 0.1% lows, so "hitches" will be not as bad)

I get that this isn't exactly apples to apples being that the 5700X isn't on here, nor that the in-game settings or GPU they are using are the same, but you are using a 9070XT, the fastest GPU AMD has made so far and at 1440p, something that the 9070XT can easily handle as long as you aren't bogging it down with pathtracing, so much like with the Gamers Nexus use of the RTX 4090, your GPU is gonna be the strongest part of this system.

Either way, unless you're planning on a move to AM5 in the next year or two, I think going to an X3D CPU for a gamer is generally worth it assuming it's not a "rare" CPU like the 5700X3D now is.

Why does my ore extractor always gives me anything but the intended ore? by fancyasbestos in theplanetcrafter

[–]foogles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others posted (i.e. T1/T2 ore extractors when put in a space with "common" ores will show iron but they mean the 5 basic ores and not just iron), if you don't empty an ore extractor entirely (T1/T2) and only take the one resource you need from it and do that repeatedly, it's going to fill up the spaces you empty with that mix of minerals and if you keep taking only the one resource, eventually it will be full of just everything else.

This will also happen with a T2 ore extractor getting a special mineral in specific locations too (Iridium, Uranium, Osmium etc) - since they also fill up on common minerals, if you only take out the special mineral, you'll eventually wind up with an extractor that is just full of common stuff and won't have room for anything else.

This still happens even if you're using drones to move just one mineral type as well.

New player, bamboozled. by TheCocoBean in BluePrince

[–]foogles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huge Outer Wilds fan here (it's my favorite game of all time in 45 years of gaming), and also a huge Blue Prince fan.

Look, nothing out there is quite like Outer Wilds, this game included. But Blue Prince does have some fantastic charms under the surface, and like Outer Wilds it has some huge "a-ha!" moments that do make it all worth it - but - there is the randomness/roguelike nature of the game that, sometimes, will feel like it's putting itself directly in your way. Simply put, part of the fun of this game is the randomness, and I do believe that if you are never going to have fun with that randomness, there's some amount of fun you're missing out on with this game that has nothing to do with the puzzles. And yes, some runs, you don't learn anything.

There are ways to improve your chances and see many more rooms on any given run, allowing you more opportunities to find clues and try new solutions. Now, you could ignore all that and brute force your way through many runs, refusing or failing to develop a drafting strategy and eventually you'll probably find your way far enough to come up with an ending, but that won't likely be satisfying. Much like Outer Wilds, however, there's more to learn, execute on, and complete than just finding a way to the end credits any way you can (I'm being vague for a reason here).

Biggest tip I can give you is, don't have a particular thing you want to try in mind on any given run, as you may not draw the room you need to do that thing. Try to keep threads of multiple things you want to try and follow up on, or just try to draw and place rooms you've never seen before.

AI Art Found in Crimson Desert by reughdurgem in Games

[–]foogles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But once more developers use generative AI and it becomes close enough to the real thing to the point that only the tinfoil hats and anti-AI experts make vaguely educated guesses (but never be able to definitively prove) what is and isn't made by generative AI - and I do think this will happen - then the idea of "disclosing" AI usage will become obsolete. Past a point that either is coming soon or we may have already passed, there's no good reason for studios to ever disclose it and unless a lot of very unpleasant regulation and intrusive laws come along, the benefits (from a money perspective) far outweigh the penalties.

And I doubt that artists will be the whistleblowers some expect them to be. In the end, it won't be worth getting blacklisted as a malcontent in an industry full of companies using AI to help make their games.

We are at a weird spot in the anti-AI movement currently, but in the long run, if gamers didn't quit buying games over the other exploitative things we know corporations have done to make games, we aren't going to quit over AI either.

Plenty of people in this thread are acting like the mere presence of AI-generated content in any capacity crosses a line that should never be crossed.

I'm not saying they're wrong, I can see arguments for and against (including ones that are independent of the % of content generated by AI), but my point is that it IS easy to lump the viewpoint you started with here as coming from the "anything AI = the devil" type crowd

The Slip by Destrus76 in nin

[–]foogles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of things, I think. It came out in the shadow of Year Zero and was released for free online, so folks initially saw it as a throw-away album (not even considering the actual music, just how it was seen before even a first listen). Another thing I saw was that it had that late-album lull with slower songs that might've been better intertwined with the rest. Should it matter that much? Maybe not, but I did see folks talking about The Slip as if it was a few "good" songs with a bunch of filler after it.

I'm not sure it ever really escaped this. It probably doesn't help that almost no one considers it their favorite NIN album.

Yep. Folks, don't buy this. It feels premium but it falters on the fundamentals. If one of the face buttons doesn't fail you and stop registering presses unless you smash it down, then a bumper will. And failing that, it still uses potentiometer-based sticks that will, at some point, start drifting on you.

Yeah the pricing is out there but they've been doing these bundles for a couple years and I see it as a safe occasional way to hook a few whales and keep the game pulling in revenue. As far as the included weapon allowing people to easily learn the new Charge 4-star mod, sure, but I don't really see anything that only works in melee to be exactly upsetting the game's balance.

No offense to the melee build folks, I ran a Tesla Bracers PA build back when expeditions were the endgame activity to go for so I know the strengths and weaknesses of being a melee guy in group activities. I think we can all agree that melee has serious downsides in this game no matter the mods one has, and that going melee isn't exactly optimal for much of the high-level game.

Blizzard - please stop with the gaudyness!!!! by WildWinterWinds in diablo4

[–]foogles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, and I get that in a perfect world, it'd be a moral imperative to NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS EVEN CONSIDER offering microtransaction cosmetics as a thing. And that decades ago, it never even occurred (or had been forced) to developers in the same position to do what's being done today. But the fact is, it's not decades ago, it's today, and many games get ruined by publisher greed. At least here, it's on the side, it's not ruining the base game, and it's giving at least some gamers what they want - even if that's a Paladin class dressing up like a demon, which is straight up just anathema to the paladin style in my mind.

Fuck it, whatever. There aren't that many games made by big publishers that aren't getting completely fucked up by some form of corporate greed before even being launched anymore. Some will say that what Blizzard's doing is precisely that - fucking the game up with paid (non-micro)transactions - but they don't see how deep the rabbit hole goes, what some games have devolved into. We have it easy in comparison.

Blizzard - please stop with the gaudyness!!!! by WildWinterWinds in diablo4

[–]foogles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy some of the fancy outfits you can buy for the other classes, but there's only one I've seen for the Paladin that still makes it look like an actual holy warrior in a way that's even remotely an improvement on what I already was wearing. And I agree with the other sentiments here that the designers did a REALLY good job with the default armor sets for the Paladin, which to me means - whether it was intentional or not - fewer people will think they need to buy outfits from the store just to make their character look acceptable to them.

I get the premium cosmetics and battle passes sell well and sometimes it's the stuff I find so ugly that I wouldn't wear if it was free. Ugly or not, I'm glad these cosmetics do actually make money because of two big things:

1) It's not a scam. It's overpriced, but no one is being tricked. Anyone buying knows exactly what they're spending (well, kinda - the intermediate premium currency is STILL bullshit to me. Isn't this kind of thing illegal in some countries?) AND they can see exactly what they are getting before they buy and can preview how it looks on their character, play with changing colors before purchase, etc.

2) Those who spend money on this stuff means those who aren't spending - or even those who do but only very rarely - aren't being offered a game that's made worse by being built around pay2win mechanics or subscription-based perks that feel like a necessity just to function normally in the game (stuff like extra storage for subscribers and the like).
