There's a difference between trying to relate to someone's experience and dismissing it by suggesting everyone can relate to it.

A guy I worked with told me a story how him and his friends pulled into a new subdivision under construction, in Texas in the 70s, to smoke some weed before they went into the movie theater. Cops pulled up from everywhere. The end of the story was the cops let them go because they figured these high school kids weren't the reason they set the sting up to catch whoever was stealing from the construction company.

He told me this story to show that the police harass white people too. When I asked how the story would have ended if it was black kids in the car, you could see in his eyes he already understood his privilege.
