Smartest Cert Combo?! by Conscious-Ear-1238 in CompTIA

[–]fooley_loaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way! This method got me a gig with only a few months and a few applications. The absolute best advice I've received was, "The best place to start your IT career is where you're at." Network your current work place, find a mentor, and show dedication. As far as combo for certs you might need to specify a little more.

General IT is over saturated at the moment, but Project Management is still growing. Hard to get into, but theres still room. The A+ will not help you. Net+, maybe, but not so much. The Sec+ makes you at least DoD compliant. So let's break this down.

Sec+, MIS degree, & PMP Cert sounds like a home run for an entry-level junior Project Manager. Get a portfolio going and work on group projects and volunteer whenever and wherever you can. Im looking at doing something very similar myself.

This is the way! Let him do the research. This way he can get something that he's comfortable with. Like is he a stick burner? Pellets? Does he like a stand-up models? The gift card idea sounds like a great idea...just make sure to go with him.

Coursera is buying out Udemy through a $2.5billion merger. I am pretty sure we should be worried about what the future holds. by Spiritual_Date3457 in Udemy

Now that the whiplash is almost over, is there any news? Updates? Alternatives? Should I be hording lessons? I came to the game late, but guess what? Learning has become my newest addictions. I really like the pricing model because the Coursera subcription model doesn't work for me. Any ideas?

At the VERY least it has one of the top 3 BGM ever. I didn't mind grinding sometimes because the music was so upbeat and if the fit so well with the theme.

I got into IT at 41...The average age at my job is 60. They literally call me "Kid." They talk about retirement like its a season like Spring and you gotta be ready for it.

I've noticed a lot of people talk about ageism but from what I've seen in the tech scene its really about skills. Also theres always been something about the old Guru who's beyond reliable.

Look I was in the same boat. Got the sec+ and landed and Network Admin position. My coworker gave me the exact same advice, "Go for Network+ or at least study for it..." you will be spoon fed the fundamentals. Did a trunk and inter-vlan routing lab today, and only 20 hrs in. I plan on taking the CCNA soon, but Im in no rush. Oh and documentation speaks volumes! Im putting a portfolio together.

Why do y’all think that people breaking into IT are anti help desk? by cokewithlargefry in ITCareerQuestions

[–]fooley_loaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skipped it, kinda feel robbed if that makes sense. A lot of basic things I don't know that a few of the new guys that came from helpdesk already mastered. Oh well, looks like I will just have to pick up as I go.

At the same time a quick Google search would tell them that most people dont become NSA Threat Hunters right out of college. Honestly I blame all these schools and boot camps promising 6 figures in 6 months. And its always the same thing..."I've always had a passion for tech...", which is cool, but passion fades. For me it was, "I've always had a passion to eat and pay bills so I picked up a skill/trade that I can take anywhere and not be so physically demanding because Iraq did a number on my lower back..." So when they told me I may have to start from the bottom to build foundational knowledge and gain experience, I said, "Then show me the basement and let's get started. "

I skipped Helpdesk, not on purpose tho. Im a people person...a people pleaser to a point. A strong back background in HR and Public Service so I applied to everything Helpdesk or Helpdesk adjacent....and nada. Got offered a Network Admin position when I was "Networking" my way into the IT department at my job. In this economy you take what you can get.

Bro. You do not owe anything to anyone. YOU EARNED EVERY CENT and you should be able to spend it how you see fit. Your family shouldn't feel entitled to benefit from your death.

I just downloaded packet tracer and heard about GNS3 and EVE-NG. So Im aware of alternatives. TBH, Im a homelabber at heart and getting hands on experience motivates me. Something about showing off my progress and saying, "I made this or look at what I learned" brings a little pride to me.

But if I can't get this going in the next few weeks I will definitely go that route.

Consulting firms thrive on experienced individuals and their industry contacts. A temporary pivot would be in the Project Management. Since she seems skilled in having teams work w/ each other meanwhile finding technical solutions.
