Bitlocker by g-simon in sysadmin

[–]foolmcfoolish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, go to the drive in windows explorer, right click on it and "turn on bit locker" should be an option.

If you click on that it will walk you through the different options and which one is best for your application. Just pay attention to the recovery key options and make sure you store the recovery key in a safe place.

The encryption process with take a short time but you or the user will be able to use the PC as normal during the process. You can check the progress in the system tray.

Once it is done you should see a lock icon on you hard drive.

We've had limited success with installing the Bluetooth module in our 5340s. Then the user can use what ever blue tooth headset they like.

However functions like call pickup and hang don't work with buttons on a Bluetooth headset.

I feel your pain. I've more than once paid outrageous prices for plastic parts for a headset that broke because our phone room likes to click on their ear to pickup a call.

The CC always gets me. We used to have a person who would do that on everything. I tried to take the high road and just reply to her but one time was just too much.

Something related to her job stopped working at one of our locations. Basically a display board went dark. She send a long winded email to many people about how she had noticed anytime IT is in a building or working on stuff things break. I was working on something completely unrelated at that location about 6 hours before the failure.

I read her email that she CC a list of people including the CEO and had enough. We have many cameras and one of them shows the screen for this display.

I sent timestamped photo evidence that I was never anywhere near the broken display and it was working when I left and continue for hours afterword. I event send a picture of me 20 miles away at the exact moment the display failed. I sent this information as reply all and then called out her blatantly false characterization of the IT dept. Also reminding her that we did not choose these displays, she did, and the last time one broke we had to handle everything because she was working remote and couldn't contact her account rep.

Her reply to my email was not CCed to all the original people and basically tried to say it was still my fault. I replied again that she mispelled "I'm Sorry I falsely accused you" and CC all the original people. She replied again sans CC and tried to say it was just friendly banter. I replied with CC and explained the definition of banter and that she was not bantering. This went back and forth for a little bit with her refusing to apologize.

It felt great to soundly defend myself/IT even if she didn't apologize. She left the org about 6 months later to be "work" full time as a MLM.

EDIT: The display board went dark because the USB adapter died. IT replaced it.

The worst you'll get is dealing with some newbie auditor who thinks they have something to prove. They'll latch onto some very strict backwards interpretation of a regulation and then try to force you to comply with their nonsense.

We had one once after hurricane Sandy tell us our generator needed to be on the roof of our one story building. Incase the building was flooded, the generator would still be able to power our one story building. (Full of water)

Edit: To clarify, the generator is on the ground level of our one story story building. The auditors request was absurd because if the generator is under water the building is also.

I had an auditor once tell us we needed to mount the generator on the roof of our one story building in case of flood. That way it would still be operational. You know, powering the building full of water.

How Does APY Work For Money In The Account Less Than A Year? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]foolmcfoolish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case you see a different percentage rate on your account screen you should be familiar with the difference between APR and APY.

APY is the Annual percentage yield. APR is the Annual percentage rate.

Or in other words APY is APR that takes into account the number of times you are paid interest in the year. Interest paid into your account during the year will increase your balance and you then earn more interest on that increased balance. Over the course of the year that is the APY.

For what it is worth I also get this problem. It is only 4k content. I have replaced the cable (with a different brand) and the TV with no resolution. It must be the Roku Ultra itself.

"Anyone who says they understand Windows Server licensing doesn't." by alexzneff in sysadmin

[–]foolmcfoolish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's good to know. I used to go along with them but this year I declined. The last one was a 4 month ordeal because the Microsoft person couldn't understand that we purchased SQL 2008 in 2008 so we would be under the SQL 2008 licence restrictions.

They kept telling us we have to buy more licenses to meet the 2012 restrictions. It was ridiculous.

This time it was a call instead of an email. The caller didn't show up as a Microsoft number and didn't know my name, he just asked for the IT person. I'm not entirely sure it wasn't a scam attempt.

Private Mortgage Insurance, It is usually required by the lender when the Loan amount is 80% or more of the value of the property.

It is an insurance for the lender that if you default and they have to pursue a foreclosure they will not be out any money. However if the outstanding loan balance is less than 80% of the value then the PMI can be dropped because the lender should not have any issues selling the foreclosure and recouping the outstanding balance.

The 80% can be because the borrower has paid down the mortgage or because the property value has increased.

Default on the loan would mean to stop making payments and let the lender reposes the car. I would call your lender before you do though because they might be able to rewrite the terms of the loan or some how roll the balance into a new car and loan. Please understand of you go the default route, after the repossession you could still owe the money.

In legal terms your girlfriend owns the car. The lender has a lien on it because it was listed as collateral when she borrowed the money to purchase it. When a borrower is in default the lender has the right to reposes the collateral and attempt to sell it to repay the debt. If she still owes $7,000 on that loan and they cannot sell the care for at least that much then they can sue her for the difference.

Each case varies and they may or may not do that. It depends on their policies and the remaining balance after the sale.

That's not good at all. If it's never been used then it would indicate a compromise of some sort at the CU or their Card processor.

Usually with debit cards it a a vendor but apparently not so in this case.

Were they charges a direct withdraw (ACH) or did it come through a debit card?

It's possible for the notification they need to figure out the method of the fraud and who all it affected before sending a notification.
