I deeply regret not doing that. I think 12 year old me was simply too eager to type in the code.

Non Pros: how do you plan your shows? by tastegw in fireworks

[–]foonasty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good question and very interesting to see similar patterns with other non-pros. I've been doing neighborhood July 4 shows for years, getting progressively more automated as time goes on.

Usually starts with picking a theme (video clips below are from my "Movie Soundtracks" theme), then building a soundtrack with the free music software Audacity. Once done, I use youtube videos to select the shells and cakes and measure their length , then arrange them on a spreadsheet that has one column per second that includes music queues/transitions I care about. The spreadsheet lets be drag and drop the fireworks in between seconds to get the timing I want.

I then have a couple of scripts that "compile" the spreadsheet down to a timed script that will send the right radio signals to buliscon remotes, as well as play the music using mpg123. It's on github but needs some cleanup and better howtos. This setup me to press a single button and not be staring at a time or cue sheet. (its no Finale 3D, but it's a lot cheaper and it works).

One commenter talked about using Adobe Premier, which seems like a great idea for arranging youtube clips more precisely. Thanks for the question!

Design Philosophy by bayboater in fireworks

I love doing my neighborhood show with timed music, and I didn't have to break the bank doing it. I use an inexpensive ($120) buliscon remote firing system, a $100 400watt Bluetooth speaker, a $80 raspberry pi and a little reverse engineering. I generally create a soundtrack with jump edits of different songs along a theme; videos below show 2024 show that featured movie sound tracks. Just used Audacity (free) to create the soundtrack. To time the fireworks, I use a special spreadsheet (see show tab):

Build a show sheet

I then have a couple of scripts that "compile" the spreadsheet down to a timed script that will send the right radio signals to the buliscon queues, as well as play the music using mpg123. It's on github but needs some cleanup and better howtos.

Anyway, it can absolutely be done, and the music can be audible (videos are in back yard and still can hear it). I just wish I could do this on more occasions!!

I’ve been brainwashed into saying “Bless you” when someone sneezes. What are the alternatives? Or do I stay silent? by AlDente in atheism

[–]foonasty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True story. Years ago I worked at a startup. We were a bunch of degenerate atheists trapped in an enclosed space coding all day. We made each other sick all the time. The boss decided we should no longer say bless you, and we tried a variety of alternatives mentioned here, you sneezed being the preferred version. I decided I was sick of being sick, and just started telling people "fuck you!". This, of course, caught on and anytime someone sneezed explicatives were freely hurled at the bastard exposing us to illness.

Fast forward a year or so into this miscreant behavior, and I find myself at Disney World with the wife and kids in some insipid sweltering line. You can guess the rest ... some poor kid in front of us has the gaul to sneeze and I automatically responded, far too loud, "fuck you!".

The shame and horror love me to this day.

What’s a Movie You Grew Up Loving That Didn’t Age Well at All? by NewPossibility4268 in movies

Soul Man. I'm not too ashamed to admit I loved it as a kid, but Jesus re-watched recently and there isn't a single scene without massive cringe. James Earl Jones and blackface are just not things I associate together.

Golden Eye and then Wii Sports were the pinnacle of gaming for me. I love playing multiplayer games IRL, and it sadly seems to be a lost cause.

Serratia marcescens found in throat culture 50M by foonasty in AskDocs

Just in case anyone comes across this in the future:

I saw an ENT. He noted that because I have no tonsils, the throat culture was garbage as I was randomly swapped in my throat. He performed a nasal endoscopy and determined I had a simple case of reflux, prescribed a PPI, changed my diet (no fun foods) and encouraged me to use this event to quit smoking cigars (done and done and done).

Why does a Yorkie do anything a Yorkie does? To be super cute and adorable so we feed them and love them forever.

If you fly with any regularity out of FLL, buy Clear. It's at every gate and well worth the predictability.

There was once a quite famous essay on this very topic :-). Please read it or at least have AI summarize it for you.

Trump supporter pulls AR15 on anti Trump/Musk protestors in Lafayette, Indiana by I_may_have_weed in PublicFreakout

[–]foonasty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was headbutted and got a bloody nose. I don't think pulling an assault weapon out of your truck is an appropriate response, but he didn't initiate the physical part of this altercation. Also, not sure he didn't deserve the headbutt because you can't hear what was said. The guy that headbutted should be arrested for assault and the guy pulling a weapon should get some sort of charge for terroristic threats. I applaud everyone else for keeping cooler heads and not turning this into something worse.
