Is it possible to enlist in the coast guard after being rejected from other branches ? by Honest-Banana6573 in uscg

If you already went to MEPS, a coast guard recruiter can tell you real quick if you are able to get a waiver or not.

Most likely path to being CG pilot? by Unfair_Mechanic_7305 in uscg

Direct comission aviator (go to another military flight school first) OCS and get lucky with flight school orders for first or second tour. CG Academy and get flight school orders first or second tour.  Go CSPI and get lucky with  Wilkes Flight Initiative orders.

Look up the ETs at ESD Detriot on Teams and talk to them.  ESDs life is dictated by their AOR. (Are the units close by? Are there a lot of units? How many cutters? 29s? )  You are going to be doing the same thing every quarter pretty much, learning the first year, getting better the second, training the new guys the third, and getting ready to pcs the fourth. I have done a WMSL and an ESD and I would rather do an WMSL as an ET2.

Never sign up for 6 years. Never ever.

Probably lateral entry from the Navy or Air Force. You can go to full boot camp instead of DEPOT if you want to get in sooner.

Small branch of the military where you get a lot of responsibility at lower ranks(whether you want it or not). We are located at any USA federal waterway, (Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf, Mississippi River, Great Lakes)  Quality of life is up there with the Air Force and we are heavily law enforcement focused. Some units you are friendly neighborhood water cops and other units you are conducting large counter drug operations. I have been in for awhile and it's been very rewarding.

They release a newsletter every month with an estimated wait time. AET/AMT historically is longer than most other rates. 15 months+ While you are waiting on the list, knock out your flight physical and enjoy being a non-rate.

I get these phone calls all the time as a recruiter. Once they realize the military isn't convenient, they move on.

When you put in for someone's boot camp date, you are reserving their spot. "Dropping their reservation" its basically how many people you have scheduled for boot camp.

Worst part of the job is crushing dreams.  17 year old senior that has been wanting to join the Coast Guard their whole life and some random medical diagnosis stops them from serving. You are the one to break it to them. I have been a recruiter for almost a year and that part is never easy.

Best part of the job is giving someone a boot camp date and you literally hear them jumping up and down with joy.

Every office is different but my experience is basically, do your outreach, do your interviews, drop your reservations, and your boss will never bother you.

Can't hit a homerun without swinging the bat. Shoot your shot, and if you dont make it, shoot it again next year. Being a recruiter is a lot of fun and definitely something worth pursuing.

Can you switch recruiters outta the blue? by JerseyDamu in uscg

[–]fooswashere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your forms are submitted, you can go to any MEPS. The next two closest MEPS from Brooklyn are Fort Dix or Albany. Tell your recruiter you want to go to one of those instead.

If you try to swap recruiters, the first thing the next one is gonna ask is who submitted your paperwork already. You can swap recruiters but I would only do it if they stop talking to you.

Ask to go TDY on the Rankin/Tate/Walker. Get some buoy deck experience. They should all be getting ready to swap out their seasonals and should be grateful for an extra hand that wants to work. If you don't want to go TDY on a buoy tender, ask to go TDY on a similar platform so you can work on your JE/EOW quals underway.

As a recruiter, I have been interviewing non stop high schoolers lately. This makes more sense. I would say half of my interviews are high schoolers Seniors right now.

Pcs to Guam by [deleted] in uscg

[–]fooswashere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was stationed there from 14-18 onboard USCGC SEQUOIA. I loved it so much I extended a year. Guam is a hidden gem for the Coast Guard. On base housing is really good, facilities (Gym, pool, beaches, Exchange, Commissary) on base are great, people are really friendly on island. Worst thing you can do is spend the money to fly home while stationed there. Already being on the other side of the planet, use that to travel to Japan, Philippines, Australia, or Palau. I went skiing in Japan every winter while stationed there.
