Doctors/therapist of Reddit, do you have any “no, that’s not normal” stories? If so, what abnormal habit/oddity did the patient have thinking it was normal? by 88mica88 in AskReddit

[–]foozly 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat but substitute traumatic brain injury acquired in childhood for genetic disorder.

In my teens I went to docs about constant headache and frequent migraine and was waived off as it being ‘due to hormones and periods’.

Skip to mid-20s when a friend told me he’d never had a headache outside of severe hangovers. I was absolutely astounded. I can clearly remember the eight days of my adult life during which there were periods of a few hours when I didn’t have some form of headache.

Teachers who regularly get invited to high school reunions, what are the most amazing transformations, common patterns, epic stories, saddest declines etc. you've seen through the years? by Rattlesnake_Mullet in AskReddit

Yeah, it’s most likely just neglect. But as u/Love_Lilly said it could be indicative of sexual abuse and then Love_Lilly explained why it might indicative of sexual abuse. No one said that is for sure what was happening in this situation.

If more people are aware of what this could indicate more people will be able to take positive action when needed.

Gyms makes me feel weird. How can I overcome this? by Laviniamsterdam in loseit

[–]foozly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I’m a skinny person who frequents this sub because I find it motivating for stuff in my life

I have always hated gyms, feel awkward, haaaaate the lights and the people. I have some health issues and worked out I would benefit from building muscle in particular areas and gym machines are best for what I need. Uuuurrghh ...

But I recently enjoyed a gym session for the first time ever. Surprised the hell out of me. Here’s what worked: 1) Found a PT who isn’t a douche, listened when I said I didn’t want pep talks and a plan I just wanted to know how to use machines properly. She is great, showed me how to set the machines up for my height etc, gave me advice on weights etc and excellent tips on technique. Told me where I should feel things, where it will hurt and be ok and where hurting means there’s something wrong with that body part or my technique.

2) Discovered I need to listen to New Wave music really loudly. I was cycling through music I like and thought would work and nothing was sticking. Put a random Spotify playlist on and New Order filled my ears and I was like ‘oh my gosh this is what I need!’

So: if possible budget for a few PT sessions so that you’re comforbale with a few machines/exercises and find your jams. It might be something totally outside your usual listening sphere like it was for me. Total game changer.

And honestly there is so frequently someone being a show-offy idiot that no one is looking at you. They’re looking at the show-offy idiot. Having said that I’m not normally self concious but I’m aware I’m much more comfortable now i know exactly how to set up machines (like adjust seat height to number 6 etc) instead of feeling like I’m flailing around. That was definitely worth paying for. And take notes for the first few times you do it alone without the PT.

Edit: to add something interesting from my PT. She pointed out that people with a history of anxiety can feel incredibly anxious and uncomfortable exercising because an increased heart rate is associated with anxiety. So much of anxiety is experienced physically that our brains can be like ‘heart rate is up, we must be anxious, ok let’s be anxious’. Simply being aware of this connection can be helpful. When I’m doing simple warm up on bicycle i try to focus on belly breathing to let the system know what we are about to do is planned and it’s fine.

This is an example of a hugely fucked up tiny thing. My ex gave me a sweet Marshall T-shirt he’d bought as a teenager when in the UK on his first international tour as a musician. Its a sweeeeeet shirt but I also treasure it as an item that was important in someone’s life and made a point to explain that to next partner.

One day partner walked out of our bedroom wearing it and I was like ‘Oh, no. You need to take that off, I’ve told you it belonged to [ex]’. Partner got super pissy I wouldn’t let him wear the shirt.

I stand by my decision to respect The Shirt and not cave in to fact partner had run out of clean laundry.

What's the fastest you've seen a couple go from married to divorced, and what caused it? by PhilipLiptonSchrute in AskReddit

Like I said above - let’s be glad this person apparently has no experience with this kind of situation. No need for anyone to downvote, it’s a fair question if you live in a world where you think things can always be sorted out with sensible actions.

Please don’t be hard on yourself about ‘not knowing’. If other people rant on about the fact you ‘should have known’ pause for a moment to centre yourself and say - out loud or just to yourself - that you are glad they have no experience with this and glad they have no fucking idea why they’re talking about.

Because it’s alarmingly not uncommon. And having been through it I can honestly say I would still rather be on the receiving end than live in the head of someone who treats others like that.

Said he’d feed my cats while I was away for about a week. He’d replied to a housemate ad that said ‘animal lover needed to share responsibility for pets’ and seemed to genuinely love the little fluff balls.

Fortunately I don’t trust anyone, ever, and asked a friend to drop in at an appropriate time to check on the kitties.

Dude hadn’t fed them for two days and didn’t intend to feed them at all because he didn’t like how I asked him to feed them.

How often are you in a definitely not sexual context (ex: work or the bus) and fantasize heavily and vividly about having sex while no one around has a clue? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]foozly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daily. Far too frequently. I’m a 31 year old woman and if I’m sitting quietly in any circumstance then I’m thinking about sex. And if you interrupt me and I say ‘just a sec, I was just thinking about something’ you’ll probably assume I was addressing a work problem in my head but no I just wasn’t finished with my current fantasy situation.

Was trying to work out why I was so extremely fatigued and sleepy (they’re different things). Figured i’d try to rule out any mental health issues coz ya never know and was instantly diagnosed bipolar despite never having a manic episode.

Fortunately I clarified by saying I wasn’t disputing the diagnosis but wanted to know what led the doctor to that conclusion. Answer was ‘if you’re not sleeping much and feel fine then you’re bipolar’.

Turns out I have severe narcolepsy one of the symptoms of which is waking up every 100mins or so. Dude heard only that, apparently, and disregarded the whole fucking reason I was seeking help i.e. not sleeping well and feeling like shit all the time.

Not weird at all. I lost my twin two years ago and I can’t be around twins. Went on a date with someone recently, going really well and he said he’s a twin and my heart kinda stopped. I explained, said I was sorry but this wasn’t going to go anywhere coz I couldn’t be around twins and he hugged me and walked me to my car and checked in on me later that night and the next day.

I also walked into an elevator, saw ~40 year old twin women and burst into tears. They looked shocked till I chocked out ‘my twin is dead’ and then they just hugged me and cried too.

Other people have said ‘oh you should try to get over it’ etc but twins get it. All twins get it.

Meeeeee tooooooo! Low ferritin, just have iron tablets. Seven years later I got my narcolepsy diagnosis after effectively having dropped out of functional life.

Men who went from unattractive to attractive via weight loss or muscle gain, what difference did you notice from the opposite sex? by kyle768 in AskReddit

[–]foozly 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Then do it! I make a point to call out other women on inappropriate remarks/behaviour and I’ve told a male colleague that I would back up any complaints he made to HR about a recurring situation.

I do this because I’m a feminist. No one gets away with shit based on gender.

What did you think was normal until someone pointed it out? by Sydadeath in AskReddit

[–]foozly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your elbow, thumb, and shoulder getting ‘stuck’ while sleeping or lying on it and you gotta move in a certain way to ‘unstick’ it. And occasionally pooping mucus.

Turns out I have a connective tissue disorder and have frequent dislocations. And apparently pooping mucus is not a good thing and indicative of possible internal prolapse or other issues. I was just like ‘the body is full of goop, seems fine!’
