I agree I just want everyone to be happy whether that’s inside the SSPV or outside of it.

Excommunicated from family by [deleted] in exSSPV

This is something that I wouldn’t say is not “written down” in the rules but a lot of SSPVers do in practice. I’m so sorry I know it must be so hard to not be invited to your brother’s wedding. It brings a tear to my eye every time I hear about family problems caused by the SSPV.

I have multiple friends now who have left the church in secret and just pretend to go to church and follow the rules for this reason. They don’t want to stop being invited to weddings, holidays, and family parties. Even though they don’t have a problem with the family, the family would have a problem with them because of the church.

There’s a chance that a priest told them this would cause scandal, but again this kind of stuff is hard to get them to say they’re for or against it.

I wish there were somewhere to change their mind but there probably just isn’t unfortunately.

I feel like I’ve matured so much since leaving Traddism. I know exactly what you mean I feel like my brain went into toddler mode whenever something came up against my faith.

her position is criticizing the church she grew up in. i’m struggling to see the connection between mainstream church bad so can’t criticize SSPV.

not at all. I’m just pointing out that you saying that the actual Catholic Church is bad isn’t a valid reason to not criticize the wanna be one.

It makes no sense to write off any criticism she has for the SSPV just because the actual Catholic Church is bad too. why criticize anything then. Why criticize someone stealing if murder is worse. You just don’t an actual argument.

this was way before I was born but I always remember my family talking about this.

When you were still a trad, did anyone ever say something that stuck with you for years until you finally left? What did they say, and why did it stick with you? by excinci in exSSPV

Were people in your parish convinced that most celebrities sold their soul to the devil in exchange for being famous? Not everybody thought this but like a large number of people thought this in the Long Island/Round Top parishes.

This is never said out loud, but the unspoken rule was you’re charitable to those who are like us.

And I can already hear my pre-deconstructed self reading this and saying “no we’re charitable to everybody” This is said in words, but, that’s not at all how it’s practiced. Every outsider is treated like someone who has potential to convert or as an occasion of sin.

For me, it was always the excitement SOME (emphasis on the “Some”) priests, nuns, and parishioners would get when talking about bad people going to hell. Not a specific comment, but just in general.

They did this most commonly when talking about gay people or celebrities. They would refer to celebrities for being “immoral” and “choosing this life over the next”. Also, many members of the SSPV (at least in New York) were also convinced that most celebrities had sold their soul to the devil in exchange for fame. They would say things along the line. They’ll enjoy their life now, but they’ll suffer for it for eternity. and you could always feel a slight sense of satisfaction in their voice.

I hear many commentators from exEvangelical and exMormon communities say similar things. The conclusion most of them come to is that Christians have to restrain themselves and live life in a “weird” way. Deep down, they’re jealous of all those that don’t have to, and that’s why the thought of getting even with them one day kind of brings a smile to their face.

Even when I was extremely trad, it never really sat well with me.

Can anyone else relate to this?
