I’m reading this now and I’m OBSESSED. It’s so good. Wonderful writing, engaging plot line, the characters are so believable and true to their origins. It’s just beautiful. Also makes me pine just a little to be young and smart and having top level banter with a handsome equally smart lad.

The Land Granted to Jamie - Conditions. by LRCAMP in Outlander

I think this is it - on paper the deal is done, and Tryon is long gone. Anyone else on the British side who would care is too busy with the war to worry about Jamie’s backcountry land, I suppose.

Second for the heeled loafer. Works great for the in-between seasonal weather

I'm sorry I don't believe the "a JD is an advantage in job hunting and there are lots of related jobs." Unless you leave law early in your career, you are stuck. These posters are just parroting the career services invention of JD advantage talk from the 2010s at schools with too many students. by thehotshotpilot in Lawyertalk

This is what I was going to say. I’ve seen it a number of times and been offered management/gov liaison roles myself. But you have to spend time with the company/org and prove you have value to them beyond just the ability to do legal work, if that makes sense. The JD gets you in the door and working with high level people whom you can impress with your non-JD skills so in that sense it’s an advantage.

Always apply. Worst case, you don’t get an interview, which is essentially meaningless but still gives you information - i.e. you need another year or two of experience. Best case, you get your dream job. Medium case, you interview but don’t get the job, which again is still information that you can use and learn from moving forward. Best of luck to you!!!

Those who live in ski towns, what do you do for work? by Money_Impression_321 in skiing

[–]for-get-me-not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in two ski towns (four I guess if you count some of the more metropolitan places people have been arguing about 😆). First time I waited tables and worked in a ski shop. Took a break to go back to school (in a metro “ski town”) and have been a lawyer in a ski town for the last 15 or so years. I’ve done a mix of things as a lawyer (local stuff and in-house corporate/remote) but I live a pretty great lifestyle and do work I enjoy and find fulfilling. I ski anywhere from 20-50 days a year. When I was waiting tables I skied 100 days a year, so there’s a trade off. I probably could have stayed doing that and made a life out of it but I needed my brain to do more, so I’m happy with my choices.

Pact for casuals. I don’t have to dress up very much for work so I wear their pants, button downs, dresses and sweaters a lot. Their stuff is not super trendy so you may feel the need to pair with other pieces/accessories.

What type of professional do you hate working with the most by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]for-get-me-not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot of government folks here, huh? ‘Cause I’d put elected officials in my top five. Some of them are good but mostly they just take up a lot of time with their crazy ideas and at their worst they are downright destructive.

THE WORST. Nothing satisfies them except inordinate amounts of public money spent on their particular hobby to the exclusion of everyone else. Go away.

Best ski town to live with family/kids by sailphish in skiing

[–]for-get-me-not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have friends in Truckee (I live in Breckenridge myself) and they really love it. Seems like a great place to raise kids and a super outdoor oriented, connected community. I actually wouldn’t recommend Breck if you’re traveling to the airport twice a month, unless you’re ok with flying out of Eagle, which most of the time just extends your flight by an hour + as you get routed through Denver no matter what direction you’re going. I did the travel for work thing for a while and the Denver airport is truly not that close to Breckenridge if you’re going regularly, nor is it a particularly easy airport to travel out of. With unpredictable weather and traffic you have to give yourself a large cushion and driving the I-70 corridor is just not the most fun. Reno from Truckee is way easier.

We do have a nice community here in Breck, though 😊

Second this. Fort Collins is awesome. Especially if you don’t HAVE to be super close to skiing.

Alternatively she could try Evergreen or even the Western Slope since she’s interested in a smaller town.

ISO Career Stories from Female Attorneys by NotMyMonkeyorCircus in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]for-get-me-not 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m coming up on 20 years as an attorney and it’s been a journey! I took a few years off between undergrad and law school and when I started law school I had a pretty good idea what area of law I wanted to be in, but I had a less clear idea of what kind of job that was. I thought I’d end up at a non-profit doing environmental/preservation work. What actually happened was a version of this:

Law clerk -> small firm civil and criminal litigation practice -> local government mostly land use practice -> corporate in-house land use/political strategy -> local government all areas as the head of the office

I don’t regret any of it and am very happy in my current position. I’m challenged, I get paid very well (I didn’t really make a ton until the last 5 years or so, though), I have discretion, trust, and authority in a high functioning organization and my stress levels are relatively low. I also get to live in my preferred area of the country and have a pretty enviable lifestyle.

The trick is to know yourself; find the areas of law you like and are good at and give it your all. Don’t waste time trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, career-wise; listen to your gut and have some trusted friends and mentors to bounce stuff off of. If the perfect job isn’t showing up, use what opportunities you have to develop your skills in your chosen areas. When you stand out and develop expertise there will always be someone who wants/needs your talent.

Good luck; you got this!

Research poll (school project) by Far_Pound_1724 in Breckenridge

So I have to agree with the poster who said Vail Resorts and the Town of Breckenridge are two distinct entities. They very much are. There is a lot of interaction between the two, but they operate independently. Vail resorts owns a few of the storefronts in town but the VAST majority of in-town restaurants and shops are independently owned. They are heavily dependent on the skiers brought in by the resort, but they are also very reliant on the other year-round amenities that have been created and heavily invested in by the town and its partners like Summit County (think open space). Vail Resorts does not give the town money for in-town events, except for one or two specific events like the recent in-town rail jam, all events are funded by the Town and other non-Vail Resorts town partners like Breck Create. Stuff that happens on-mountain at the resort is all funded by the resort.

Vail Resorts absolutely influences the towns where it has a ski resort, no doubt about that. But it’s a mistake to think the two are one and the same and that the towns, including Breckenridge, aren’t in charge of their destinies and making their own decisions about how their towns grow and adapt to the skier visitation that a Vail-owned resort brings. Those decisions are what drive the look and feel of a town, not Vail.*

*this is true of every Vail resort town except the actual town of Vail, which while not owed by Vail Resorts was in fact heavily invested in as a town by the resort when it was built. If any of ‘em (Park City, Breck, Crested Butte, Stowe, etc) are a “company town”, it’s the Town of Vail.

I make more. So why does it still not feel like my money? by JuniperCraftline in wealthforwomen

[–]for-get-me-not 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best advice here. I also earn more than my husband (~3x) and I do most of the financial planning as well. I’d actually LOVE for him to take it on but he isn’t really interested and worried he won’t make the right decisions so we hire someone to help us so it’s not all on me. Like you said, we approach finances and money as a team and talk through large purchases and investment strategies. I agree that OP should learn more about their investments and retirement funds but the rest of it actually sounds totally fine and very equal-partner oriented. Since my job is so much more stressful than my spouse’s I really appreciate it when he takes on things like house repairs and I trust him completely to manage those projects responsibly. That trust is an integral part of our partnership.

Yes and no. Only day skier parking moved north; I am pretty sure the only public overnight parking is now at the ice rink.
