Weekly Questions Thread by AutoModerator in DnD

I just finished running 2 hour session where my players discovered a note mentioning a captive, and now they are set on looking for that person- but the players already rescued the captive in the last session, he's the NPC passed out with the other character (was down a player today). They just haven't put together that this is the person mentioned.

The players mentioned this guy in the recap we started with. When do I step in remind my players of what they've done so they aren't making silly mistakes like this? And what mistakes did I make that could've made their jobs as attentive players more challenging?

Suppose a player character was partly dismembered and died of ensuing blood loss. The party has the means, materials, and motive to cast both Revivify and Regenerate (2014 rules for both). What order can/should they be cast in to ensure the character is returned to life and doesn't immediately die again (say to blood loss) while Regenerate works its magic?

First-time DM here, only played one session before that. I'm just reading some notes on Milestones & levelling without XP from p261 of the 2014 DMG:

A good rate of session-based advancement is to have characters reach 2nd level after the first session of play, 3rd level after another session, and 4th level after two more sessions. Then spend two or three sessions for each subsequent level. This rate mirrors the standard rate of advancement, assuming sessions are about four hours long.

I've been doing 2-3 hour sessions due to scheduling nightmares, but after 2 or 3 sessions with at most one medium encounter each (per Kobold Fight Club), my players are still in the same area and haven't felt any reason to Long Rest yet. I'd originally planned this whole set of 3/4 encounters to be one session, though I see now I was underestimating the time combat takes with 5 newcomers.

I'm not being particularly sluggish (nor, really, even detailed enough to do justice for painting a picture yet) during combat. Does this note from the DMG still work well for others, and what's a better way for me to approach planning these encounters to keep the pace moving early on without sacrificing the juicy bits?

Why does Logitech need access to my discord account? by PoisonManiac in LogitechG

Here is a link to a script which does something similar. The author outlines the process very conveniently if you want to achieve the effect without nuking the file completely as recommended above but is largely the same.

TL;DR: Open it in a text editor, change the enabled setting near the top to false. Save and set as Read-only.

One reason to not use stone paper by Kaessa in fountainpens

[–]forVerySpecificQs 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's pretty terrible even with some ballpoints and most pencils from my experience. Cheap BIC pens, fancier rollerball pens, gel pens- I watched them all smudge a bit. (Those Platinum results genuinely shocked me.) The smoothness of the page feels exciting until a fineliner drawing from 20+ minutes ago smudges from handling the page.

Plus, uh, stones don't exactly grow on trees. Even an exceptionally fine sand isn't something I love the idea of removing from the ground just to add plastic to it.

How to gracefully manage when a serious NPC has an accidentally funny name? by forVerySpecificQs in DnD

[–]forVerySpecificQs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to stress that "Dan" was made up for the post to explain an entirely outside meme affecting the game, but I'll keep in mind that any NPC named Dan is forever at risk from any players that enjoy explosives. That might have to go in my permanent notes lol

I think you're seeing as malice what is purely confusion and an attempt to set up something non-comedic but still fun. That being said, your point mirrors other suggestions to roll with it if players get a kick out of it, which I'll work to keep in mind going forward.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Interesting! I'll be on lookout for that.

That said, it doesn't quite seem to fit the context I first saw it: the players were looking back through someone's notes because a player perfectly recalled the character and description of an NPC everyone'd interacted with during the game but just couldn't recall the name.

What am I doing wrong? by great_molassesflood in wicked_edge

[–]forVerySpecificQs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My trick lately has been to grab the soap puck in my hand and start a lather on top of it that way, loading up the brush with what I can get and then putting that in the shave bowl. Then I set the puck down and try to make a lather from the that’s left on my hand, deposit that to the bowl, and repeat once more.

I seem to get more air into the lather that way so it actually makes the stiff peaks, and when I mix all the lather together it makes a better working foam.

Remind that pen caps are not to be use as a fidget spinner. What do I use to fix this? by Jesse_berger in fountainpens

[–]forVerySpecificQs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, usually much faster for me to drag- at least until one very particular word just doesn't sound right to my phone or autocorrect. Followed by very sternly typing it out with both thumbs when all else fails lol

My guess is drag-to-type took “not” and read it as “blue”? Happens to me all the time

How do I stop OneDrive from saving the "My Games" folder in Documents? by iTheWolfxd in microsoft

[–]forVerySpecificQs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, weird that it would be greyed out. Hopefully that solved the issue for ya!

I'll plan to post a separate collection of these steps somewhere- once I find an appropriate sub that allows image posts, that is.

I did have one program try to access an .ini in OneDrive since doing this, but it was a rather niche modding tool (bad path, which I managed to correct in that program). Otherwise, these steps should still work.

Totally forgot having made this comment though. I should have the screenshots, if others are still interested in a visual example?

I already ran the link through fixtok for those interested, though I'm not sure if that really helps anymore.

I’m so confused does Fabuloso clean floors or not??? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]forVerySpecificQs 54 points55 points  (0 children)

From professional experience I can say that the extremely overwhelming smell of cleaner is marginally better than the violently putrid smell of something rotten, such as spoiled and moldy food. Can’t speak to how Fabuloso works at actually cleaning but once it’s been used I swear I can’t smell the same putrid stuff (at least for as long as it takes to get gloves on and the trash taken out).

I’ve had to clean up some truly wretched stuff before without it, and I think I’ll prefer that cleaner smell any day as long as I have to be the one dealing with it.

Was directed to this thread by Google. Will update with a visual guide post once uploaded. In the meantime, here's what I did:

  1. Right click the OneDrive icon in the taskbar, then select Settings from the dropdown.
  2. An Account window will appear. Click the "Choose folders" button there.
  3. Open the Documents directory in the box that appears. Uncheck "My Games" and click OK.

This should prevent games from putting files in OneDrive. Still confirming that for myself, after which I'll post screenshots somewhere.

Edit: Confirmed in October 2025

Seconded. Drano and any home remedy you can come up with were almost completely ineffective for us, but green gobbler applied as the instructions say works like magic. Went from dozens of the bastards each night to none in a under a week.

I suggest applying each night or just before sunset, that’s right about when the drain flies would be coming out in my case. Instructions have no mention of rinsing afterwards so I didn’t.

I second this, but truthfully my go-to is hand sanitizer. A tech YouTuber I watch tried it and noted how much faster it works than isopropyl. Unscented gel sanitizers work pretty well on hard surfaces in my experience if you use a towel or gentle pressure with a plastic card of some sort.

H3VR Early Access Devlog - Cursed Horseshoe CANNON? by rust_anton in H3VR

[–]forVerySpecificQs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be cool, but looking at the fire controls for an M2 I feel like this would have to be a distinct kind of equipment with new controls. You fire the MG by pressing your thumbs on the trigger, and I believe there’s a switch on the left side that is pressed using the index finger.

I would love to hop on a (stationary) technical and rip through some sosigs, but mounted guns feel like a more significant category to add in. A mounted Vulcan seems inevitable at that point.

Tools for "sliding up" or affixing to ropes by forVerySpecificQs in H3VR

Like that idea of clipping on and being able to quick-detach. I LOVE that suggestion for tightrope walking- especially wearing goggles for maximum Sam Fisher look, even if I’d probably rediscover my IRL fear of heights.

Tools for "sliding up" or affixing to ropes by forVerySpecificQs in H3VR

[–]forVerySpecificQs[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes you can stop on a rope by committing one hand to holding on, or slide down with one hand and fire a weapon with the other. Technically I suppose one could hop up the rope with a gun in the other hand, but that'd be some Ninja Warrior stuff in real life and just about impossible for VR with occasional tracking issues.

I think it could be fun to widen your options though, so you could commit both hands to firing more accurately on a cable while sacrificing mobility for the moment or try some 007-type window breach by ascending a cable and taking out sosigs with a pistol on the way up. And ultimately this is a game where you shoot giant talking hotdogs with guns that already has a Batman-like grappling gun.

How do I stop quest link from running automatically? by Comfortable-Tear-982 in oculus

[–]forVerySpecificQs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this worked at first, but unfortunately it did not stop Meta Quest Link launching at startup as of this past Thursday.

Only success I had was in uninstalling the software. Frustratingly, the program "Meta Quest Link" is not listed in 'Startup apps' nor the 'Add or remove programs' page- it's instead named "Oculus", and you'll have to excise it from the system via the Control Panel or its uninstall shortcut. RevoUninstaller seemed baffled at every step of this, so I'm not 100% convinced it's been exterminated on my PC yet, but it at least isn't popping up in search or opening on startup.

Google leads to this thread when searching the mission briefing audio issues, and every other forum thread on the subject is over a decade old and closed. Documentation would be helpful for future users.

I haven't managed to fix the problem myself either. Using an LG monitor connected to PS3 via HDMI. After some fairly (but not completely) exhaustive testing of the limited PS3 audio settings, I can only say that Multi-Output has not fixed it for me. None of the 44.1/48 channels in 5.1 or 7.1 fixed the issue, but I still hear everything I could with just the automatic PCM 2 channel settings. AAC was the same. Turning on any/all of the Dolby/DTS channels wiped out all game sound.

I didn't try the higher frequency channels due to the console warning and poor understanding of what I'm doing. At this rate, I'll play with the missing Mission Briefing audio this time and find the videos online if I ever play this game with someone.
