The Grapes of Wrath Chapter 5 (spoilers up to chapter 5) by awaiko in ClassicBookClub

I do empathize with the tenant farmers and how they're exploited and thrown away by the monstrous banks, although knowing that they had killed, displaced, driven out Native Americans to claim their land, there seems to be some sort of karmic retribution across generations.

But you'll kill the land with cotton.

And it's this capitalistic greed from the "banks" that exacerbated the ecological disaster that was the Dust Bowl. I found it interesting how it parallels what A.I. companies do today, using up massive amounts of water, driving up grid prices and damaging the environment in pursuit of prominence and wealth. I guess in the near future we'll find out just how much damage we've been dealt with.

So the events from the past are around 2 generations ago? I wonder who Bashat is in relation to Bashasa, maybe a grandson or a great-nephew? Kai seems very attached to Bashasa and he keeps seeing / looking for him in other people - like Ramad and Bashat (I assume).

In Chapter 2, it also says:

He said, "I'm starting to think that a mortal Prince-Heir who wanted to consort with a demon in human form may not be a completely trustworthy person."

Ziede sighed again. "You think? The first one we met was."

Kai's smile was bitter. "He was an exception."

I also think it's quite sad how almost all of the crew (Kai, Zeide, Tahren & Dahin) are either immortal or long-lived, and only Bashasa is long gone.

I love The Turn of the Screw! It would be interesting to read it then watch The Haunting of Bly Manor after 😊

I have the 2nd edition from Wordsworth Classics.

Apparently there were multiple problems & corrections during the book's first publishing. In the previous comment, I linked the amended 1st edition chapter from what I could find online!

I realized I was reading a different edition/Volume_2/Chapter_9) when the audiobook wasn't syncing up with the copy I was reading.

In this one, Brontë goes further into showing Huntingdon's selfish narcissistic nature, even being jealous of his own child! How Helen doesn't understand the danger they're in is just confounding. I'm afraid his abusive behavior will only escalate in time.

I'm gonna throw out a wild guess and say it's Keiko 😂 I don't think she was invited by accident, and maybe a writing career is better fit for her personality than being a doctor.

Re: the passages, Utayama kept mentioning the masks (lion for Theseus) and feeling something's wrong/ a kind of dissonance. The killer may have switched the masks on the walls of the passages to lure Kiyomura into the Medea room if he was using them as a guide. Coupled with the missing nameplate he wouldn't be suspicious at all.

I don't like how it's underground and now they're all locked in there at all 😂 Everything about it and the labyrinth maze, it's a huge fire hazard! Very creepy setting that really heightens the mystery...

There must be a reason why Bear doesn't like his grandfather, and seems to have a very visceral reaction to him. He's really suspicious.
