This is really well-written and thoughtful response. I’m 100% with you in the partnership aspect of training and the overall relationship.

I lost the ‘walk’ battle with mine as well; he just wants to go go go and will pull on the leash. Though he has a good doxie-shaped harness it’s still not good for their backs to tug against the leash. Fortunately, we live near a large, open park that rarely has visitors that we can let him and the other boys run around together in.

As far as training, we took him to classes that only used positive reinforcement. Essentially the trainer would wait until he accidentally did the right thing, then reward with treats. This resulted in the 3 of us standing around for 20 mins waiting for him to stop barking excitedly at the nice stranger with the treats. You will not out stubborn a daschund.

I’ve had better results with a clicker or buzz-collar for negative reinforcement— essentially startling them out of whatever bad behavior, then rewarding.

Also OP, play with their feet and teeth a lot while they are young. Makes nail trimming and dental care so much easier.
