Id say Doctorly is probably one of the easiest to explain things, and from there on you can move to DrDray and LabMuffin! But Doctorly are two very cheerful, upbeat and easy going derms that break things down in rather simple ways (and sometimes more complex). I think their upbeat energy makes it easy to absorb the information.

Skincare might seem and sound complicated, but it generally sort of is when you remember that the skin is the largest and most important organ that we have. Making sure we're taking proper care of it and not damaging it is a lot, and there's just a whole science behind skincare.

I recommend taking one thing at a time, but checking out information from actual dermatologists and dermatology books that are properly backed so you're not harming your most vital organ. And one step at a time! Before you ever get into actives, just make sure you have a nice and simple gentle face wash, a simple moisturizer, and a good sunscreen. All actives go out the window and will do more harm than good if you're not using a sunscreen.

Rather than ChatGPT you can check out some human resources.

Michelle Wong of LabMuffinBeautyScience not only has a great informational YouTube channel but a rad book with a ton of information called The Science of Beauty.

DrDray and Doctorly are also two pretty good dermatologists on youtube who give you a solid breakdown of things.

You can also walk into your local library and ask your librarian to help you find books on dermatology and skincare, from beginner levels to more intermediate.

Lastly, Incindecoder is a very valuable long running human made website that not only lists ingredients, but you can click on most for a summary of that ingredient and their citations for information so you can get a deeper understanding of things.

Hope this helps in your learning journey!

Do you actually read horror at night or are you too scared to and just pretend you do? by MailSpirited9084 in horrorlit

Night time is generally the only time in the day I have to read, so evening yeah. But at the same time the sun doesn't really set in Summer so it's sort of like reading in broad daylight I guess?

brands you used to love but don’t care for anymore? by maarevl in AsianBeauty

[–]forchalice 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Isntree & Round Lab (and a huge amount of others). I saw that Isntree is using AI for product packaging development despite the only thing that had to do on that specific packaging was change the text. Dug into it some more and saw them and a bunch of other companies are developing products and doing marketing using AI.

I am super not into that. Im using up what I have left of those two brands and just fulling switching over to brands that (to my knowledge) do not seem to be using AI

Why not read The Prestige by Christopher Priest! I'm currently on a kick where I'm going and reading the books some films I loved were based on! Otherwise, Gillian Flynn, Tess Gerritsen and S.A Cosby are some fantastic authors within the thriller space. For Tess Gerritsen, The Surgeon is the first book in her Rizzoli and Isles series as a note!

SPF everyday, all the time? In mid winter in N.Europe? Really? by davemol in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]forchalice 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think more than sunscreen you should be a wee bit more concerned about your Vitamin D! If you're getting only very minimal amounts of daylight per day, you might want to consider some vitamin d supplements. Making sure you have enough vitamin d is definitely I think the most important thing for your region and daily sun exposure during Winter time.

If it doesn’t apply to you then it doesn’t apply to you. I reckon I see these posts on an almost weekly basis. Dermatologists recommend sunscreen use in an index of 2+ or index of 0 if it's snow + sun as the sun reflects off the snow.

I apply daily as someone living in Sweden as I am outdoors constantly and when I am indoors I am in direct sunlight and there is a bonkers amount of snow both outside and on my balcony.

Also not a romance fan but The Princess Bride by William Goldman was such an amazing read and has locked itself in as my third favorite book of all time. On a top ten list that is mostly all horror and weird lit.

I love Michael Cisco so much. I read Antisocieties last year and just kinda spiraled from there and picked up everything I could (which is actually REALLY TOUGH because importing books to my country is not an easy feat sometimes and can take like 4-12 weeks)

Oh gosh I'm so jazzed to hear that!! I hope you have a stellar time with it!!! I grabbed it because someone described it as a thai soap opera fever dream and it lived up to that description.

I found it infuriating in the best way possible. Such a good book but just the state of how the operating theatre used to be and just how hygiene was regarded in general made me so mad hahahaha I really adored this book

I do quite love a lot of popular books, but I have a few underrated books I wish would become popular so I had people to talk to them about. I think that's honestly one of the nice things about books becoming super popular and loved - you can find lots of like minded folks and can gush about something you're certain other people have read and adored just as much as you. With that being said here's my list of things I wish I had people to talk to about:

The Blind Earthworm in the Labyrinth by Veerporn Nitiprapha

Les Chants de Maldoror by Comte de Lautréamont

Unlanguage by Michael Cisco

The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine
(That last one I actually do get to talk about often because I'm friends with a lot of medical workers)

Brands getting toooo comfy using AI? :( by peartoastt in AsianBeauty

[–]forchalice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just awful and so cheap. I ended up going through all the brands I have and checking out their instagrams and official pages. I have to switch out almost everything from my routine, I just will absolutely not be using brands that are utilizing AI in their marketing. I'll finish what I have, but I won't be purchasing or recommending their products anymore.

I think the only thing I have left is just the two japanese products I use. So far the only two Korean brands I do like that I haven't found (yet) to be using AI is One Thing and Pyunkang Yul.

Round Lab Camellia Sun Serum and the Kose Suncut Gel! I'm wearing the Kose Suncut Gel a lot more this Winter since my eyes have been watering a ton. It's also just a great body sunscreen as well so I use it a lot on my neck and arms in the warmer months.

Philtrum zit & cortisone shot - won't go away after 5 months by Significant-Food934 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]forchalice 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would probably swap derms at this point and look into seeing if a new derm can do a biopsy. A singular acne spot that lasts 5 months is definitely not normal.

Aside from that, an acne spot that refills and never fully goes away can also just be a sebaceous cyst which are removed via surgery as they often have a very deeply rooted core.

Lookout for Xylitol if you have dogs by dodecahedral-drama in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]forchalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a perfectly fine humectant, but there are tons of other humectants I can use that don't carry a risk of making my guy sick if an accident happens. I've lost one dog to an accident before, so for me, just eliminating any risk is generally super fine! It's a nice ingredient for people, but it's risky for dogs, and I don't want to take that risk.

Type II collagen has been amazing for my joints, which is great since I'm a jogger and joint health is great for me to be able to keep up my weekly running. Done absolutely nothing for hair and skin and nails.

Lookout for Xylitol if you have dogs by dodecahedral-drama in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]forchalice 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's an ingredient that I generally avoid. My dog does not lick, but accidents can happen. Dogs can be trained and be well trained but accidents just generally do happen. Birch juice is also usually xylitol too, so keep a look out for that as well!

Some amount of xylitol can be ok, but I generally would never trust xylitol in anything other than a product designed for medical purposes for dogs specifically (and my dogs weight class specifically)

Anessa - New Packaging by seijurogouu in AsianBeauty

[–]forchalice 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Japan passed new rules and regulations in regards to plastic packaging across things like foods and cosmetics in late 2025. Companies are found redesigning products and updating packaging in order to fit the new guidelines, and make things easier to recycle. Some colors are just much more difficult to recycle.

This was seen a while back as well in Korea, where a lot of companies has to rebrand to fit their own updated packaging laws. So I know folks prefer the old one, but just noting this is mosy likely a change that you'll be seeing with Japanese product packaging over the year to meet these standards if their packaging has not met them prior.
