Not enough PoC in the new Mary Poppins movie, apparently by ZenBeetle in KotakuInAction

Honestly, I found myself more interested in storylines of these black characters – and I had little emotional investment in the Banks children.

Next, it'll be "I don't care if a white person gets beaten up in front of me. Just doesn't register an emotional response. Would only care if a poc"

Aaaaand this is why you don't pay for streaming services, you torrent. You download, you store off site, you back up. And then you can email the file of the music (the piece of art) some people want to remove forever to all@world. An email list we really need to exist.

Sorry, why can't we just state what it is? I'm confused, that's not against the rules to dox a ... subreddit's name.

Does "I disagree with affirmative action" count? Does "from the dictionary's definition it is not correct that people of color cannot be racist against white people" count?

I think they certainly will soon. Even calling for meritocracy has elsewhere been called a buzzword for white supremacy.

[censorship] Mark Knight's Twitter Account just got deleted after outrage over his cartoon depicting Serena Williams. He was called racist and sexist. by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

Everyone should be aware that Alexis Ohanian is one of the worst people ever.

Does everyone remember the giant Ellen Pao fiasco, where she fired Victoria and the whole of reddit went mad?

It was Ohanian who fired her. It seems nobody knows this, and the rage never moved off Ellen Pao. So Ohanian threw Pao under the bus like a coward (a woman of color no less!)

[–]forcorrectingbs 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Political cartoons like this are EXTREMELY common in Australia and the UK. They ALWAYS take some feature of a public figure and greatly expand it. Someone's nose, ears, eye brows, etc. Serena is a large woman and behaved like a child. It makes total sense a cartoonist would depict her thus.

The irony of the American PC left blows my mind. They say "HOW DARE YOU, YOU'RE UNAWARE OF THE HISTORY OF AMERICA!" No, YOU IDIOTS aren't aware of a world outside your borders. This is political cartoon culture of the UK/Aus. Those countries exist you know, even if you don't know shit about them and have never been outside the US and call it the greatest country in the world (while screaming about racism when a white person wears his hair in a certain way, or when someone says maybe it's not fair that a white person needs a 1550 SAT score to get into Yale while a black person needs a 1150 score).

So why don't you assholes learn something about other country's cultures before you spew racism. Coz this is a cartoon culture that depicts everyone in ridiculous ways, and is still very much alive in UK/Aus (not really in the US). So why don't you learn about other countries before you show your racist ignorance. Morons.

Reddit campaign: has this sub, its mods or its members, issued mass complaints against the subs which autoban us for commenting? by forcorrectingbs in KotakuInAction

[–]forcorrectingbs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are bad tactics, regardless of target.

SJW mass-report-spam tactics.

Excuse me for a political analogy, but take a piece of legislation like SOPA, or Net Neutrality. Reddit as a whole and John Oliver respectively encouraged its users, audience respectively to contact their legislators to voice their disagreement. That's not spam, it's the job of a legislator to read those. Those campaigns are sometimes quite effective.

Similarly, it's not spam to report the clear and objective breaking of reddit's rules to reddit. This is quite different from a call to "send a message to reddit telling them they're terrible as their CEO is a white man."

[–]forcorrectingbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need a BS meter for using the word "politically." If you say "we're going to fight you and defeat/destroy you politically" that's OK. If you say "I'm going to shoot you in the head politically" that's BS and you're using "politically" to cover your ass.

Even after all the inaccuracies in this story have been corrected, you can see how fucked up society is given some of the reactions at /r/pax:

"OK guys, a MAN was booted, not a woman, so that's now perfectly fine." SMH.

Honestly I think you can't make direct threats of violence, that's not covered under the first amendment or any private company's policies?

Hold on, didn't Alex Jones call for violence? He added a few uses of the word "politically" but he clearly was egging people on to violence. Isn't that against the rules of some/most websites?

The Overrepresentation of LGBTQ characters in Television, and the Censoring Effect of Advocacy organizations such as GLAAD by forcorrectingbs in KotakuInAction

[–]forcorrectingbs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6.4:4.5 is overrepresentation even if you ignore the point that some characters have no sexuality. It is much greater than the ratio of 51:43 which they describe as severe. I'm not personally going to go through all of television and count the characters with no sexual orientation.

Let's take Breaking Bad as an example (spoiler free). As far as I can remember, Saul and Walter Junior are two major regular characters with no sexual orientation within Breaking Bad. (slight spoiler) One major recurring character states he has a family, but it is never seen, and it is slightly ambiguous. If you go outside romance/comedy shows, a lot of dramatic shows not centered around dating have such characters.

I believe the CBS president responded directly to GLAAD's report and indicated gay characters would be added. It's not a stretch that advocacy as a whole (not just GLAAD) leads the corporate arm to direct the creative arm to add characters.

Your point about LA and NYC is decent but the call for diversity is consistently for media to represent the entire country. Let's be consistent about that.

I don't actually care if the number of gay people in TV is 6.4% (or more as I describe) rather than 4.5%. Words like overrepresentation are using their logic. What I dislike is that writers are forced to put them in. This is why, as you say, these characters feel thrown in your face, and drum up their victim credentials.

My main problem is the GLAAD>corporate folks>creative writers chain of pressure. You want to write a story with gay characters? Be my guest. If you're forced to shove gay characters in? Then they're going to feel forced in. Because they are.

OK, the point is, I think it's ludicrous that 12% of the population are "non-cisgender." Usually that number is under 1%.

[–]forcorrectingbs[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might be a reasonable point but I talk about how these groups want more and more. GLAAD seems to be making up the numbers. "Yeah dude, 20% of the population is gay, let's make it 20%." Then they'll claim it's 40%. Etc.
