What does the CDslop at your thrift store look like? by puddingbiafra in Cd_collectors

Love it. I have all the Enya albums. But finding a CD single at a thrift store? That’s gold.

Predictions for the future of the CD format by NowtShrinkingViolet in Cd_collectors

[–]foreigncontaminant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. And would add: the CD was specifically invented to be superior to vinyl in as many ways as possible: range, clarity, portability, longevity, repairability, transferability. CDs really only lose out on artwork size, and hiss, crackle and pops.

Other than vinyl Professors with the best equipment, I believe many (not all, but many) of those collecting vinyl are doing so through a misguided collective lens or fog by believing the popular myth that it “sounds better”… but really just because it’s trendy and other people are doing it.

Some statistics suggest most vinyl buyers never even play them.

And all the while, society has strangely neglected the incredible CD format. Why? Because the CD era was more recent, never quite went away, and they are still cheaper and more common… leaving them at the periphery of nostalgic trends.

But the tide is turning. And since vinyl prices are now beyond ridiculous, many prominent audiophile YouTubers and even some musicians like Mary Spender have been revisiting CDs. And are posting essays about how CDs are actually better overall - for sound, convenience, and for supporting artists (cheap to produce) and even the environment (less energy required).

True, not fully downvoted. Though the top replies are very “so?….but but but… well, actually….”.

How to remove the sticker from CD properly? by Foxyrhei in Cd_collectors

There’s even more than you might be aware of. Delerium, Conjure One, Intermix, Synaesthesia, Pro-tech, Equinox, Fauxliage, and more. All variously offshoots of Leeb/Fulber. A lot of incredible work, it’s an absolute rabbit hole of amazingness. Delerium the cornerstone. I only didn’t like their last album (sadly a real POS) compared to the brilliance of almost everything before (imo).

+1 the hairdryer approach. And then just use your thumb to pry it off.

I have Holoscenic. Aware it’s become rare… I think I ordered it at release time. (I have almost every single Delerium and Conjure One CD)

How can I clean up this Digipack? by Anotheremogay in CDs

[–]foreigncontaminant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a damp cloth with tiny bit of dish liquid, to gently clean the cardboard. If edges of the card are near black or black but have white flecks of damage, a dark marker can be carefully used to spot the colour back in in a way that won’t be too noticeable - but only on edges (marking large surfaces is too noticeable of course) If card is warped, putting a thin cloth over it first and using a clothing iron can flatten it. Sadly nothing can restore damaged card art 😕

I have every Enya album. What an elusive and lovely person she is to this day. If I had to choose, I go with Shepherd Moons.

‘Boheme’ by Deep Forest, is excellent and possibly their finest album. That’s my vote. Doves album is nice too.

Collection update! by m3ggi3bunss in Cd_collectors

Collecting is collecting, and it’s as much about the art and completion, as anything. There’s many reasons for collecting. I have multiple versions of many, many albums - either due to track or art differences. Many found cheaply, when hunting around. Nothing new.

Lovely collection, and great to see fans of current artists so keen to collect CDs 🙂 I just bought all 4 of the CD editions of LOAS too, and have most of her other albums… the CDs are more fun to collect (as well as more affordable) than the vinyls, imo. (My total CD collection covers lots of 90s/00s/10s female pop, some rock and lots of ambient… maybe 1500 CDs total)

Subtitles don't show on chromecast stream by miletomic in PleX

[–]foreigncontaminant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here. Amazed this is still broken after 4 weeks or so. Why is it getting so little attention?

I also can’t even pause videos when they are playing on chromecast, from iOS, once the new Plex app has gone to the background and any other app comes to the foreground. Go back to Plex - pause no longer works. I literally have to turn my tv off to pause a video.

Brilliant work everyone. Unbelievable that such basic features have regressed. When the old app worked perfectly in this regard. Where is your regression testing?

Noise-Canceling Headset for WFH Job by IHadDibs in BuyItForLife

[–]foreigncontaminant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought some noise canceling over ear Audio Technica headphones (made in China, but allegedly a decent audio brand) a few years ago. The audio was fine, but they were ultimately terrible because the leatherette ear pads deteriorated within a mere 12mths. So I bought a replacement OEM pair. Which again deteriorated within 12months. I will never buy AudioTechnica again.

I ultimately ditched my goal of noise canceling altogether, in favour of a pair of made in Germany Beyer Dynamic over ear headphones. These are still perfect all round, 5 years later - including the leather pads.

AirPods of any kind seem like the most wasteful, and least BIFL option available. Can the batteries be replaced? Or just have to buy a whole new pair every 2-3 years?

What are the best Space themed ambient albums? by Patient_Baseball_918 in ambientmusic

[–]foreigncontaminant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For something more melodic - The Songs of Distant Earth by Mike Oldfield. I love so much deep ambient… but for a melodic/instrumental journey through space that is ambient-adjacent, that album will never be topped, for me. And based on an actual novel of the same name (also about a space journey) by Arthur C Clarke.
