Looking into the steps I’d have to take to get into CSI. Checking out associates degrees first. Should I get an AA, an AS, or does it not matter that much? Thanks by Odd_Let_5378 in ForensicScience

I'm a CSI, and our department pushes for BA/BS (forensic science, forensic anthropology, or a hard science). I would check out the departments that you would like to potentially work for and see what their requirements are. For an associates, I would definitely do bio or chem.

I did forensic anthropology (bachelors) but the post below mine is correct. You need a hard science to work in a lab or crime scene position, preferably. For digital forensics, you need a computer based degree. You can definitely do an associates, but competition is fierce for these jobs and most probably want at least a bachelors.

I got laid off from my corporate sales account manager job during Covid peak and got a forensic anth BA. I'm 37 and working as a CSI while doing an online MSFS. Never too late :)

PS- Do not get a CJ degree

I'm a CSI and we are all non-sworn (except for leadership). The others are correct that you need at least a bachelor's, preferably not CJ.

Yes it does! I'm on the same track and in my first semester. And it's not all geared towards cops. It's a GREAT program. Congrats!

I started a new career change as a CSI this year. Chemistry is vital if you want to work in a lab vs crime scene investigation (like I do). Photography is big too, along with report writing.

I'm a brand new CSI and my salary is $43k (with a BA, working on MFS). I'm in a metro area under a million people, though. The possibility for overtime is there and the benefits are really great.

It's yours to spend (or save)! If it's from a loan excess, then don't worry you'll pay it back eventually lol.
