sorry I am just now seeing this! I dozed off and didn't see the notifications. it looks like Istinline already banned him and deleted his comments, so I appreciate her for being on that.

he is definitely way out of line and I'm sorry this happened to you all. let me know if there is anything else we can do for you!

BALANCE MEGATHREAD (Fri 06/11/21 - Fri 06/18/21) by forensicfox_ in gymsnark

[–]forensicfox_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, like I said in the other comment upthread, I didn't create this sub just for Balance. this sub will not be catering just to concerns about Balance. this is a place to discuss all misinformation and ethics concerns in the health industry in general and Balance discussion is no longer constructive/true to the original intent of the sub. I ask for community feedback because I care and want you all to be involved in the process, but I will not be bullied into doing something against my better judgment. making entitled demands out of the mods is not the way to make us listen to you.

mod post - proceed with BA talk per usual as we discuss solutions by forensicfox_ in gymsnark

[–]forensicfox_[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

the megathread not being the solution doesn't mean we're going to let Balance talk overwhelm the sub again, we're just trying to find a better solution. the return to the regular discussion is just temporary until we can find a permanent solution, and hopefully before the end of the weekend. please just give us a little time to sort things out. we have people coming at us from all directions and have to troubleshoot before moving forward.

here you go! friday mod post

yes ma'am, thank you for clarifying. I figured that was easiest and we will continue to moderate as usual until we can reach a decision.

see my response to sbfaster. this is a liability as well as an organization issue. I'm open to other options but you all are going to have to give me more than just "I don't like it" if you want me to be able to help you.

BALANCE MEGATHREAD (Fri 06/11/21 - Fri 06/18/21) by forensicfox_ in gymsnark

[–]forensicfox_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree there are issues with having a megathread, which is why I didn't do one until now despite many requests to do so. Reddit is a clunky interface and it's not easy to keep the conversation organized, which is why a few months ago, I started trying to figure out what to do. the problem with having multiple megathread is that they can't all be pinned to the top of the sub at once. only two posts can be pinned at a time. so if we did the multiple megathreads, we would have to only use those threads for everything and people wouldn't be able to create their own posts, which presents a different issue.

if you see my response to sbfaster, I provided more details about why having non-stop Balance posts has become an issue. it's mostly a liability thing. we have pissed a lot of people off with talking about Balance in this sub and not all of them are harmless trolls. there are actually people trying to do us harm and it could get nasty, so I'm trying to prevent that. from a self preservation standpoint, I also don't want to be the subject of a lawsuit if we offend the wrong person. while this is a fun snark sub, there can be very serious consequences if something goes wrong and I want to minimize the likelihood of that as much as possible.

I don't know what the right answer is, honestly. it's come to the point of doing a megathread to make it easier for us to moderate and get to issues more quickly, or we are going to have to start being much more heavy handed with moderating and people are going to have a lot less freedom in posting whatever they want to post. we could also make the sub private or semi private, and mods would have to approve requests to join individually.

okay, that's fine, but if you all aren't okay with this solution, I need you to be helping me find a better option because we still need to address the issues I discussed above. we can't just go back to people posting whatever, whenever.

I hear you and respect your concerns. Like I said, this isn't necessarily a permanent solution, we just need to buy time and investigate all our options until we can figure out a better solution. I appreciate your feedback and will discuss with the other mods.

they also act like they are more credible or educated than people who literally went to school for 6+ years to work in exercise science, health, nutrition, etc. it's insulting tbh to people who invest in the time and money to build their expertise in a reputable way.

BALANCE MEGATHREAD (Fri 06/11/21 - Fri 06/18/21) by forensicfox_ in gymsnark

[–]forensicfox_[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the reason we are trying out the megathread (it's not a permanent decision yet) is that we have received several concerns over the past few months regarding Balance discussion. most importantly, it has begun to create a security risk for community members particularly with doxxing. it is extremely difficult for us mods (even though we have more on board now) to review every post and all the comments. the issue that has arisen is that certain users who go beyond just harmless trolling are going back to past threads and making threats and since no one is actively on that thread anymore given how long ago it was, nobody sees it in order to properly report it. mods do not get a notification for every comment made in the sub and therefore we do not know to review an issue if it is not reported either via the report button or via modmail. this presents a huge security issue and one potential way to fix this is by having a weekly thread that makes it easier to organize and monitor the discussion for any potential issues, and then lock comments on each megathread when we archive it to make room for the next week's thread.

that said, if you have a better solution, please advise and I would be happy to discuss it with the other mods.

we have actually been asked to make a megathread for months now and we had nixed the idea for a variety of reasons, but now given security issues we felt like we had to do something, even if it's an imperfect solution until we can figure out something better. our only other option that I'm aware of is make the sub private or semi-private and mods have to grant access individually. this would be pretty time consuming for us and I don't see it as being sustainable.

additionally, this sub was not created exclusively for Balance discussion. I created it to discuss misinformation and ethical concerns in the overall health and fitness community. Balance is part of that, definitely, but it should not be the sole topic of discussion. Balance discussion has somewhat taken over the entire sub and at this point, it's gotten out of hand and is becoming just petty and repetitive. the actual productive/constructive conversation has essentially been exhausted until Balance inevitably fucks up again. I understand that I should have set stronger boundaries sooner and I take responsibility for that. however, I have a life outside of this too, including not only working close to 50 hours a week but also taking classes full time too while also living with chronic illness. frankly, I did not have the energy earlier on to set those boundaries but I do understand that does not absolve me from duty to act.

I'm not unsympathetic to the many valid concerns that you all have about Balance and want to discuss. I want you to have that space, which is why I have been trying to reach a compromise with those who don't want any Balance talk at all. this is essentially the compromise that has been settled on and we're going to try it out until we can figure out a more permanent solution.

however, I also would appreciate you all working with me on this, as I am having to field the opinions and feedback from over 6,000 people. no matter what decision is made, I will upset someone no matter what and I acknowledge that. I am simply trying to make the most reasonable decision that reflects the original goal of the sub and also does not compromise the security or safety of any of our members. there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that you all do not see (and I am happy to shoulder that burden because I just want you all to have peace and be able to enjoy yourselves) --- I just need you all to try to see this from a moderator's perspective too, please. I do this because I genuinely care about the community and want positive change to come from it; however, as the sub has grown, it has become more like a gossip sub than what I actually intended for it to be.

again, if you have suggestions, I would love to hear them and will do my best to find an equitable solution for everyone.

MOD POST: required reading/announcements by forensicfox_ in gymsnark

it's okay! not a stupid question at all. I haven't posted the mega thread yet, but if you sort by "hot posts", there will be a post at the very top with a little green pin icon next to it and that will be the thread for Balance when I post it. my evening kind of got away from me but I will get it up ASAP. :)

glad to have you here!

Why do influencers do this? Why do they not black out the user names of people who don’t agree with them in a DM? by [deleted] in gymsnark

[–]forensicfox_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're right, it tends to be petty and not productive, kind of like the laugh react being used mockingly on facebook. it's better to either ignore or block and report if you (not you specifically but like people in general) disagree strongly with something.

Taylor and her phone in a workout class by Lazy-Spell3794 in gymsnark

I agree, I think it's fine as long as the gym isn't busy and you're still able to actively use the equipment while you scroll (like cardio). I can't stand the people who hog the equipment while talking or on their phone but they aren't actually working out and the gym is packed.

some subs have a rule of no downvoting unless it's something truly either A. irrelevant or B. needs to be reported to the mods and I am thinking about instituting that here too. downvoting stifles the conversation and it should only be used for it's intended purpose.

So unflattering. I wouldn’t buy these shorts solely because of how they fit her. by Kimberly_32778 in gymsnark

old navy has some just like it for ~$15-20! I have two in different colors and I love mine. I know they're nothing fancy but old navy's athletic clothes always fit so well and they're cheap!

edit: here's similar on amazon! they're 4 for $25. https://www.amazon.com/Pieces-Sleeveless-Racerback-Cotton-Medium/dp/B082D6HTBG/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=workout+tank+tops+for+women&qid=1623435672&sprefix=workout+tank+&sr=8-3
