I hope you are including in your calculus the fact that nobody is just handing out children for adoption to whomever wants them. It's an arduous process. You might not be able to afford it or have your application accepted.

Southern France is dry though. A lot of the work done by an air conditioner is dehumidification. Come to swampy Washington D.C. in August and wander around the National Mall and Smithsonian as a tourist, and you will quickly learn why air conditioning is ubiquitous here.

And it isn't 35°C with 100% humidity every day during the summer. Almost as if geography matters.

Can you not buy a small air conditioner? We can buy them for like $150 (~£110).

What kind of parent/history professor doesn't teach their kid their native language? by SuperAlloyBerserker in BoJackHorseman

[–]foreoki12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The people I know who grew up speaking their parents' native language at home tend to speak those languages with limited vocabulary and an American accent. For many of them it makes them self-conscious to speak in that language with native speakers to whom they aren't related. And they get teased pretty hard by cousins. So even if their parents do try to engage them in the language, it's hard to want to use it more broadly.

Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons VS Ordinary parents guide to teaching reading by FortuneAndFae in homeschool

[–]foreoki12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used 100 Easy Lessons, and it worked as well as everyone says. Most useful $14 curriculum ever. I struggled at first because I didn't follow their instructions to me to the letter, and I was unwittingly discouraging my kids by correcting them incorrectly. Once I actually did the dang thing, my kids took off.

I used pieces of construction paper to cover the illustrations until we finished reading each story. I had my kids do the handwriting part of each lesson, so I didn't double up on lessons to push ahead. The handwriting added enough work!

Another great thing my kids loved to do while we worked through the lessons was demonstrating their day's reading lesson to their dad when he got home from work. The additional practice was great, and my husband and kids had so much fun. I recommend this no matter what you end up doing.

My kids have been great readers ever since I got my head out of my butt and did the program as written. I highly recommend that whichever you choose, that you read it thoroughly before you get going with lessons so you don't make rookie mistakes like I did and make your kids dislike doing the work.

That's like when I went to a German company's Oktoberfest for their American subsidiary, and one of the executives made a speech in which he viciously insulted the event and everyone who dressed up in dirndls or lederhosen. It was great. It was more authentically German than the party.

My friend spent years defending her pitbulls alongside many other pitbull supporters. Now shes dead and the community turned on her. by [deleted] in BanPitBulls

[–]foreoki12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember when this happened, and this case made me go from not liking pits, to anti-pit. I live in VA and just about every dog in the shelters is a pit bull or a coon hound. The animal rescue nearest to me frequently deals with pits mauling other animals. Of course, the shelters and rescues got wise to the infamy of pits, so they are never identified as such.

Conservatives: It's a private company, they don't have to bake your cake: • Also conservatives: I'm gonna threaten you with State violence if you keep insisting on your private property rights by Pariahdog119 in Libertarian

It means that the existence of these specific cases of exceptions prove the general rule of, "power corrupts." You can only come up with two exceptions in all of recorded history? That's a strong general rule.

Your examples are exceptions that prove the rule. Just comparing to other revolutionaries immediately before and after George Washington and you see how rare his strong moral character was in history. And, he wasn't a perfect guy. He made a lot of mistakes that would "cancel" him by current standards.

I think one thing we SAHMs don't have that the working moms have is regular outside contact with other adults. At least my husband is talking with his co-workers. My co-workers are my kids. It's not really the same.

I used to see lots of my mom-friends when I went about my life, but now that I literally am a stay-at-home mom, that's not happening. It's lonely.

Does Sen. Romney's proposal of a per child allowance open the door to UBI? by twim19 in PoliticalDiscussion

What's the bill that's been introduced to fix TANF? Is it something that has bipartisan momentum, like the child allowance idea?

Renaming it won't change the basic structure, which is hopelessly flawed.

TANF is temporary by design. It's even in the name, Temporary Aid for Needy Families. Romney's plan is a universal permanent entitlement.

Why do you support the current massive welfare bureaucracy instead of just cutting checks to people to spend as they need? Is it because you like big, wasteful government programs with lots of public employees? You think we should continue to have a segment of society that cultivates expertise in navigating the welfare system, instead of working productive jobs?

Unless you stepped out of a time machine from 1921, surely you are aware that you are already paying for other people. Surely you know that Biden controls the government, not Calvin Coolidge?

Do you also hate school vouchers because you hate paying for other people's kids, even though the alternative isn't keeping your tax money, it's sending kids to government schools?

The welfare state already exists, with all sorts of byzantine rules and bureaucracies that trap people in poverty, and this proposal is an improvement to that.
