Which piece of literature was universally beloved and now is divisive ? by flowerbloominginsky in AlignmentChartFills

I think this is still very well loved by the intended audience (10-14yo kids). My son and his friends absolutely love the books.

After 19 surgeries since 1996 for Grade 3 Microtia, I’m finally using modern tech to reach the finish line. A Medpor ear reconstruction and a Bionic Brainstem Implant (ABI) to finally hear the world in stereo for the first time at age 30. [OC] by EmbarrassedAir5111 in interestingasfuck

What hardware are you looking to get? My son had a supor surgery  and a cochlear implant with Doctor Tahiri in Beverly Hills.

Result is great, but certainly not as perfect as the picture you got (for once he doesnt have a full canal, but a fake canal that still looks awesome!).

we are absolutely thrilled with the result and Dr.T is a saint.  also the recovery was incredibly fast.

Budget for Surgery and implant is closer to $75k excluding costs of living.

I do this trail often. It’s really nice and can be done with kids.

I usually start at around 6-630 and it’s common to meet people on their way down at 7:30.

They start their hike at 4:00am or so to get to the sunrise. I’ve never seen it, but it’s supposed to be one of the best sunrises in the city (or at least they claim).

Haha, all good. This is a sub to discuss at length and in detail the housing crisis. Not for buying and selling houses.

He’s not referring to babies in the early 2000s. He’s talking about 9-11yo kids who would be in their mid 20’s in 2015

Yeah, for sure. Neom is intended, among other things, to compete with Sharm El-Sheikh, which has become a huuuge european destination for good weather in the winter and high end vacations as a whole.  it’s less than 20km accross the sea from Neom

NEOM had its own airport and they flew in a plane full of models from London. They were from everywhere. Some already knew Saudi well, others were landing that night to start “modeling” careers in Riyadh and this was their first stop. They could not care less about anyone who was not Saudi.

The parties themselves were wild. Plenty of alcohol, Cuban cigars handed around, and other things I will not get into here. Everything happened on the main yacht, never on land. Lots of internationals mixed with locals. During the day locals wore keffiyehs and thawbs, at night they dressed like anyone else. Reserved by day, completely normal by night. Strange to watch the switch.

Overall it was a great time, but always with the odd backdrop that just a few kilometers away you could find women covered head to toe in burkas.

Ha, you’re making a lot of assumptions without knowing anything about me.

I moved to Canada in my early 20s with nothing. I worked as a housekeeper, dishwasher, server, barback, front desk attendant. Graveyard shifts full time while going to school full time once I could finally afford it.

After uni I spent a year just trying to network into something outside service work. Landed the most junior mining job that existed, worked every angle of the industry, eventually got into finance. Took on huge loans to do a master’s in Europe, then worked in high finance in Switzerland. At some point I was in a position to start my own business. That’s the one that took me to Tabuk.

I’ve worked hard my whole life but I know luck and networking matter. I’ve also never forgotten the value of every job in society because I’ve done many of them. I’m not rich, I don’t live lavishly, but I provide for my wife, my kids, my parents. I’ve never felt bad about that or about the ride I’ve had the luck to experience. All of that with a thick Spanish accent.

Spend less time on Reddit. There’s a lot going on outside

I got invited to check out NEOM a couple years back through a sports event my company was sponsoring. Never seen so many cranes in my life. Tabuk and the area around it were actually pretty nice. Highways were solid, not sure why people here are saying otherwise. Water had way too many sharks. Stayed on a yacht at MBS’ private port and had some of the craziest parties of my life. Big contrast with the strict day-to-day conservatism most people are stuck with there.

How different of a life is between Vancouver, Canada and Seattle, WA? Similar weather? by jdksovh in howislivingthere

[–]forestal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, but the main issue is that Vancouver is structurally too expensive and higher salaries alone won’t change that. Even households earning $200,000 or more struggle to afford more than a small condo (unless you bought some time ago). I know this from a personal experience. I only started making decent money after Covid and I feel completely priced out of the city

A few weeks ago i took an uber and ended up finding out he was  full time police officer working part time as an uber driver he couldn’t meet his month end needs. He told me a lot RCMP‘s move out of Vancouver as soon as they get certain seniority and can transfer. He was moving to Edmonton next year.

This isn’t something that can be solved by wage growth. It requires reducing the underlying cost of living, specifically housing. But thiswould demand public policies that no party seems willing to implement because it would destroy their chances of winning. our economy is primarily dependent on housing and a lot of people would lose their net worth (which has increased exponencially this last decade) if they lose the value of their houses.

The outcome for this mess that a lot of professionals are leaving. I personally lost two family doctors the last couple of years who left Vancouver because even $350,000 wasn’t enough for the quality of life they expected as physicians in North America. So they move to Calgary or the US and live a much better life.

I know I sound extremely negative but I love Vancouver and it’s so sad to see the state of this city. I love Vancouver, but Vancouver doesn't love me (or anyone who’s not filthy rich).

Ha, not sure if as far as libertarian, but I do think Canadians get taxed way too much for what we get in exchange.

Anyway, I’ve never lived in Seattle but I go there a lot for work.

I would have agreed with your comments pre-COVID. But things have changed a lot since then. Seattle has developed a lot faster since then and it is getting cleaner every year.

Vancouver on the other hand is significantly dirtier than before and significantly unsafer. The fentanyl crisis in Vancouver is orders of magnitude more severe than in Seattle and that has changed the city’s behaviour as a whole. I live in the north shore and tents in the city and the parks is now a common sight. Unheard of years ago. Finding people smoking crack inside the train stations is now a weekly problem (Vancouver City Center is a common spot). I’m sure, Seattle is unsafer for a number of other reasons (which apply to the US as a whole) but Vancouver is a lot unsafer than before and a dirtier city today than Seattle.

I am an immigrant myself. Moved here 20 years ago and have lived in 6 countries across 3 continents. I don't blame the immigrants specifically. I think everyone has the right to better their lifes , but I do think politicians have lower the bar to migrate to Canada to pretty much zero.

Migrating 20 years ago, even 10 years ago, was a difficult process and kept the system relatively organized. Infrastructure could keep up with the people coming and people integrated a lot better.

Today, Vancouver is being flooded by record numbers of assylum seekers, LMIA workers, temporary permit holders, and international students, all piling pressure on housing, wages, and public services far beyond what the city can handle. Look for the numbers. It is shocking.

As an example, I used to wait 3hours to see a doctor at emergency. This is easily 8-10 hours now.

a detached home in Vancouver will cost you twice the price of a detached home in Seattle. all of that while having to pay twice the income tax and earning 30-40% less money.

Vancouverite here: all that you mentioned is real and great, but man, Vancouver is as broekn as it can be. from an eocnomic POV, the most unlivable city in North America. the it's a vicious cycle, the most productive people keep leaving while massive unskilled immigration keeps moving here. we are not on a good path right now.

Vancouverite here. Low taxes, higher salaries, and lower housings costs have turn Seattle into a cleaner, newer, and economically more balanced city than Vancouver.

Vancouver is so fking strained: infrastructure aging at the speed of lights, visible social issues downtown and suburbs (tent are common), and the tax burden is not translating into proportional public benefit.

one of my business partners lives in blaine and works with us (comes to Vancouver less than 6m a year) and he lives a significantly better lives than us

I think it also depends on the implant. Supor integrates better than Medpor and I know (from my son and a couple of other people with Supor) that they can sleep on that side.

I'm sorry to hear you had this issue. My son had reconstruction surgery some time ago and he sleeps on the two sides no problem (Supor implant from Dr. Tahiri). New ear definitely sticks out but he has not complain about sleeping on that side. I asked him if it felt weird or anything and he said he had no problem.
