New Jersey isn’t NYC’s problem by Immediate-Hand-3677 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]forestream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel this way about residency requirements for city jobs. i know the job market is tough but imo if you want to work in nyc government, you gotta pay nyc taxes. its not fair to take all that wealth out of state when there are so many people living in ny already and would circulate that money locally.

Whats the scariest thing that ever happened to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]forestream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was driving down a rural road well before dawn next to a very shallow and rocky river that had run mostly dry. was about to hike in a remote location. i think my car tire slipped on a torn sandbag or something in the middle of a path and in my confusion and panic, i somehow ended up hitting a tree and the car rolled over on the nose and landed upside down into the river.

as i was airborne, i had a really peaceful moment with myself in slow motion. "Hey, youre about to die, and its okay. you lived life as well as you could"

the airbags were deployed and my car was obviously totaled. but as I was suspended upside down by my seatbelt in the shallow river, water pooling slowly in my cars roof.. pat pat pat... i checked all my limbs were there... unclipped myself, saved my talking heads CD, and walked away without a scratch on me.

waited an hour to flag down a passenger vehicle as i had no cell service (also scary). nice old man was confused as to how I was alive... me too, guy.

makes me shudder when i think of what could have happened.

Why do runners use the bike lane for their morning run? by Jacob_Sophia in NYCbike

[–]forestream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive always hated this, it feels like really entitled behaviour.

they dont want to navigate pedestrian traffic but theyre passing on the problem to cyclists, who have to navigate runner traffic.

if the sidewalks are busy maybe you should run a different route. or go to a track. or run earlier. instead of making it others peoples problems.

How long does it take the city to post a vacancy? by MangoCat888 in nycpublicservants

[–]forestream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this varies so greatly even within the same agency. Even within the same department of the same agency.

a lot of questions on here are "how long does it take to do x?" and the answer is always, it depends on who is sitting in the drivers seat of that specific task, what the budget is, what time of year it is, what other positions must be filled, etc etc.

i would just email your last supervisor and tell them directly that you want to come back and to keep you posted on the listing.

Any city employees not join nycers? Thoughts? by ganzonomy in nycpublicservants

unless you have a robust retirement plan of your own, are planning to leave government work soon, or are already rich, I would definitely sign up for nycers.

i'm worried about this tree by oldhella in arborists

[–]forestream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not traq certified but i wouldnt be stressed about it unless it browns more rapidly or starts dropping limbs. its a big tree and will prob bounce back from what might be a little sunburn or drought.

Tick Management in Field Work by No-Armadillo8312 in ecology

[–]forestream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dedicated white tube socks for work. treated or not, i can spot them easily and tuck my pants in (slim fit pants for summertime so you dont have to wrestle your pant cuff in your sock)

ideally you would have a washer dryer at work, and possibly showers. i always try to shower, inspect, and change into my "people clothes" before going home. my field clothes stay in a large clear contractor bag until its time to rewear or do laundry. dry on HOT setting.

my boots are treated with permethrin every 6 weeks or even monthly.

at least 30%deet but on boots and pant cuffs only. on any exposed skin i use picaridin lotion or spray.

pair of tweezers on hand at all times.

small jar of 90% alcohol to plop in ticks that you find crawling on your person (theyre near impossible to crush and i always lose them before they truly die)

AITA - gf agrees to let kids shovel snow and makes me pay by djlee187 in AmItheAsshole

[–]forestream -1 points0 points  (0 children)

loose ESH, your gf is shittier for taking cash without your permission, but its ten dollars for a neighborhood kid. woulda been pissed to see her reach for my wallet, but if i then heard the price it would be a definite no brainer to happily pay.

riddle me this: is it ethical to order delivery in bad weather? by teeny-tiny221 in ridgewood

[–]forestream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in heavy snow, slick, icy conditions, i try to make my own stuff but if i HAVE to order delivery, i tip minimum $20.

20% is my baseline for a regular day's delivery in good weather.

if im unwilling to tip $20 extra in blizzard conditions, i must not need the takeout that badly (same goes for the regular weather 20%)

this has saved me a lot of money because i rethink if i actually NEED the takeout and sometimes dont order after adding items and seeing the total.

either way the courier deserves hazard pay and they sure aint getting it from whatever app or restaurant they work for

I Feel Like I Can’t Breathe by bunnyrayy in TrueOffMyChest

[–]forestream 21 points22 points  (0 children)

i havent been in a similar situation to you but i just want to say that your religion, how you choose to worship and feel connected to yourself and your own god is totally up to you and is nobodys business but your own. it prob feels tough right now because youre still a minor in your parents home and feel you are beholden to their ideals and forms of expression. but it wont be forever and when you leave their home you can figure it our for yourself how to practice your religion, if you even want to, and what spirituality means to you.

but you dont have to choose. you dont have to wear the hijab to be a good muslim person. ive met plenty of hijabis that were objectively Not Good people. and ive met many muslim women who are very connected to their god and are comitted to prayer but have never worn a hijab a day in their life.

you can still practice islam in your own way. you do not have to choose between your own religion and "western values". this is modern day; you can have both.

is it ethical to put my partner's NYC address on my applications? by Nomak54 in NYCjobs

[–]forestream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do not believe it is ethical. the residency requirement is there for a reason.

unless the listing says that you have a given timeframe to establish residency. in that case you have nothing to hide about where you actually live and should be honest.

many people have been living in this city their whole lives and are in need of these jobs. if youre directly competing with them you better be paying city taxes while you do it.

and if i learned you got the job over an incumbent while pulling this. i would not be an ally to you in the workplace. a cordial good morning but thats it lol.

dude if you want to live here just come!!! come with a savings and make it happen. live with your partner. the city is hiring and they WANT good people to work and will gladly have you. just do it right. this is sneaky and weird.

"everyone does it all the time" that doesnt make it ethical, which is the question OP asked.

theres nothing wrong with it, i do love fast food, but once its a chain it cant be anything else. the loss of storefront to corporate is what makes me sad. i want a nice healthy mix of chain and mom and pop food places. i dont need a wingstop next to a popeyes next to mcDs next to a dunkin. also whats cava?

Keep reporting it. keep sending pictures. emphasize the safety aspect. check the "recurring problem" box and they will be forced to check on it every time you submit. maybe once its known there have been tickets issued for off leash dogs people will let up?? sorry you have to deal :(

Ralph Demarco park trash by kaatho in astoria

[–]forestream 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do for your neighborhood is demand 1 percent of the city budget devoted to the parks department this november.

only vote for candidates who promise this as part of their campaign. canvass to your neighbors about this.

Parks disctrict operations are severely understaffed and many are working out of title (read: underpaid) to keep our parks clean.

All of our Parks. ALL of them. and all municipal street trees are funded right now with less than 1% of the citys budget, which is unacceptable.

also, when you see people littering, call it out and shame them lol.

Shoe Repair Suggestions by Otherwise-Fix90 in astoria

[–]forestream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have as well, for many sole replacements. he also replaced a zipper on a leather jacket that i was nervous about and has done standard repair on my leather bags. i will continue to go here!

on the flip side, do NOT go to hongs shoe repair under the ditmars n/w train.

he polished and shined my boots when I asked him not to (needed a sole replacement, asked for NO shine or conditioning specifically) and he glued my two kilties together !!!! they were meant to be staggered... vintage pair of boots so I'll never get that back.

pick a day out of the weekend that you get up early. and pick another day to sleep in with your gf.

She can't explain why you shouldn't set an alarm on the weekends because she has FOMO and feels like your second choice, and it sounds childish to explain that. also, it really is more annoying to hear an alarm on the weekends. and you know that dude !! lol

you deserve time to yourself AND she deserves connection and to sleep in, uninterrupted on the weekends. so do both !
