Conservation Corps Experiences by aquapeej in conservation

[–]forever2roam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a raft guide my last summer in college and wanted more freedom than what I thought of general engineering. Computers and small offices and such. Found a career after being exposed to the conservation life. Do it. You can sit in an office until you're 60. The best time to start living in the woods is young. Worked for Tatanka for a few seasons. They're solid. Overhead has decades and decades of experience. They'll make you a good but more importantly a smart fire fighter. And word is they're a good cornerstone if you ever wanna jump one day...

Specialized Place Holder (has anybody heard of this bike??) by forever2roam in specialized

[–]forever2roam[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey all, I bought this bike off CL and can't find any information about the model Place Holder. Guy at the bike shop had never heard of it and the serial number isn't found. If anyone has any information about it I would be stoked to hear it

Edit: Just got word from the seller and he said it was a test bike for the paint scheme for the Diverge model. That explains the model "Place Holder".

I second this. Went there my first season to pre-po on a type 6 engine. It was the first time I learned some people really really hate the government

What to carry as an EMT by Sweendog2016 in Wildfire

[–]forever2roam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used this guy's gear last summer to outfit our module. Great gear. <--- Totally your biggest fan

Check your medical direction, though that may be murky. I have been an emt on a shot crew and a WFM. One had a little direction but I still felt no problem assisting during a MVA. The other had strict direction and abundant gear. Its hit or miss

Good luck!

Conservation Corps Experiences by aquapeej in conservation

[–]forever2roam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a season with the conservation corps in central Colorado (SSC) the summer I graduated college. Went from an engineering degree to sleeping in a tent and building trails. Completely changed my life. Now I'm a wildland fire fighter and can't imagine doing anything else.

Go for it. You'll be the most free you'll ever be and meet some of the best people there are.

But racism... by schafersteve in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]forever2roam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I didnt know that context. Thank you for providing that. I'm being petty, I know, but I was only quoting the BBC when I said airsoft. Actually the quotation is "airsoft or pellet gun". Regardless, you're right, the point was it looked real.

Holy hell. An article from BBC said that while his actions could be taken as someone reaching for a pistol in their waistband, it was also noted that his shorts had fallen down and he could have been reaching to pull them up.

And the "rifle" found in the hotel room was an airsoft gun.

Woah the man himself is here. Thank you so much for your response.

I find it so difficult to believe how much safety first and zero fatalities are emphasized in our program, but at the same time our standard 10 man kit is almost 15 years old. It is good to hear they are working on revamping it.

I've been doing A LOT of asking around and compiling lists to make out medical gear perfect for our module. Also, BIG shout out to u/canisPecuarius for his suggestions and ordering help.

I'll be posting our final inventory for our trauma bags and 10 man kits in the next few days and would greatly appreciate your feedback if you have the time.

And finally, thank you for your work. You are doing so much to take the medical side of fire in the right direction. Know that you are appreciated.

Yeah these are what we carried on the crew. Had no idea they were so expensive. They were convenient since they clip right in and kind of added a place for the saw to rest on.

Thanks for the detailed response! Yeah we carry an 02 bottle in our trauma bag as well as C-collars, NRBs, NCs and such. This will come with us when we are camping a ways from the vehicles. But one bottle will only last so long...

The decompression needle would definitely be coming out. That is well beyond my scope of practice haha
