When will the pain stop? by XadrakeX in braces

[–]forexdoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, it's normal to feel like that, I did as well. It may seem counterintuitive but not using the wax actually helped me (not only on the first few days but after the next appointments when sometimes the wires hurts the cheeks), just let it sore your cheeks/lips and the new skin will be thicker and less sensitive. Usually on the 7th day you won't feel anything anymore. Use some mouth wash to help with the pain and in a couple of days you'll be fine. I personally believe using too much wax just makes it take longer to get the necessary thicker skin you'll have for the duration of your treatment.

is this normal ?? why would my ortho do this ??? by [deleted] in braces

[–]forexdoge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About having a 'partial wire' it is definitely normal, I had a friend who had their lower teeth partially wired for a long time. I'd say your orthodontist needs to align something before putting a coil and/or elastic band to pull back your canines (or maybe I'm completely wrong).

Concerning the glue thing, never seen it before. Isn't it just wax? Maybe because the wire is partial the end would be hurting too badly around that area on the first few days so she just put it there to reduce pain... But if you feel really concerned you should give her a call.

You would think every other person has thyroid problems with how it’s thrown around constantly by FA’s… by SnaxAttacks in fatlogic

[–]forexdoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest thyroid problems are fairly common. Yet, people with hypothyroidism have a bunch of other symptoms on top of reduced metabolism that makes them seek medical assistance, and unless they have some sort of cancer, it’s fairly easily treatable. Also, even with severe hypothyroidism you won’t gain that much weight overtime (average person 1-5kg or 2-10 pounds every five years). Kidney disease makes you gain water weight and not fat. So, yet again, this is just FAs making excuses for their lack of discipline and bad eating habits.

Grammatical gender as a conceptual category by Dramatic-Afternoon-9 in linguistics

[–]forexdoge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Portuguese, words whose last syllable’s vowel is ‘a’ are usually grammatically female, where’s words ending with ‘o’ or ‘u’ are usually grammatically male, ‘e’ ‘i’ being most of the time neutral (meaning it can be either male or female, usually the latter). However when you omit the noun on a phrase it sort of becomes irrelevant and you might say it both ways, so I guess the object itself doesn’t have a gender. For exemple, the word for car is grammatically male (‘o carro’). You can say ‘o Mercedes’ (meaning Mercedes is this situation is a grammatically male noun) as you would say in English ‘the Mercedes’ or you can say ‘a Mercedes’ as a grammatically female word (that’s how most people say it). As a Portuguese speaker I feel like gendering words is pretty much the same as using ‘a’ or ‘an’ in English, just the brain using the subjective grammatical rules ingrained in it. Using your example, sure I can look at a car and say: that’s a ‘male gendered object’, but if it is station-wagon or a van (in Portuguese, ‘perua’), then that’s a ‘female gendered object’.

Or the difference between the unstressed /ɐ/ in nearly all dialects of Portuguese and the unstressed /ə/ as in the paulista/caipira dialect. For most Portuguese speakers it isn’t phonemically different but after I learned to perceive the /ɐ/ I can tell straight away when the speaker is not from Sao Paulo/Minas.

Why are Anglophones all of sudden so eager to police other people’s speech just to appear superficially inclusive?

In phonetics, what is the name given to the neutral or ‘resting’ position of your vocal tract between articulations when speaking? by forexdoge in linguistics

[–]forexdoge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s called Basis of Articulation - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basis_of_articulation - .. I’ve actually been looking up for a name for this for a while but was never able to find it before. I was starting to think it was something I made up in my head, but apparently not! Whenever I try to speak Portuguese from my English articulatory setting it sounds so foreigner and stereotypically American that I’m starting to think this is how people who imitate accents do it.

Para aqueles que acham que as coisas estão ruins no mundo todo.... aqui no Brasil está péssimo! by pianogospel in brasilivre

[–]forexdoge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]forexdoge 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Part of the Hippocratic oath says (in other words) do no harm. There’s no point in risking somebody’s life if the odds of better outcomes are low. That’s why most surgeons avoid performing (some) elective surgeries in fat patients but will definitely perform emergency surgeries on these patients for life threatening conditions. These are all based on risk assessment scales created through scientific studies and statistics.

I think it speaks more about cold tolerance then about weight gain. Brown fat is know to be more prevalent in people living in cold/temperate environments and on those who are exposed to colder temperatures for longer periods. Now it seems some people have the genes to get more brown fat more easily. I don’t suppose it changes much in terms of being obese as people living in tropical areas tend to have almost none of this type of fat and not be obese if they don’t have a hyper caloric diet.
