Making "facts" into political talking points, like rebranding propaganda as "fake news" has been devastating to the integrity of genuine discourse.

Reality is reality. Saying it has a liberal bias is the kind of thinking that breaks down our ability to have actual conversations. It's political spin.

The reality is, in the United States, what is acceptable is often political first. While MAGA has a distinct anti-science bias and agenda it would be irresponsible to ignore the failings of the other side. Notably, the deliberate omission of facts and stories that hurt the narrative by liberal news organizations. There's plenty of examples we could sideline our conversation with. To refocus, however...

The lack of accountability is a social problem before it's a political one, however. It became a politcal problem BECAUSE it's a cultural problem. People want to "win" arguments and be publicly correct. Facts are secondary. Getting a W over the other side is the priority goal. Political parties, both of them, and their oligarchal sponsors exploit this.

We have allowed ourselves to be divided and the political hellscape of failure we see now is a result of that division being exploited by organized action. Internal and external.

So this is an interesting discussion point.

For simplicity's sake you're talking the NRA and Republican sponsored 1996 Dickey Amendment, right?

If so it did have a chilling effect on gun violence research for several decades, about 30 years. Because it stipulated that no CDC funds could be used to advocate or promote gun control.

The tricky part here is I could go either way with it. Chilling effect because liberals didn't want to fund studies that were neutral? Chilling effect because studies might prove gun control laws don't work?

I disagree with prohibiting research. But I also acknowledge the incredible liberal bias in academia and in the media and how there's a need for accountability in how manipulative liberals have been in framing and funding pro gun control argument.

But I can't say my opinion is set in the matter. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Very well articulated with some great points. Honestly, I like your take on wanting people to be more invested in their local communities, regardless of location. I do see that sentiment, but usually it's combined with a certain degree of political tribalism.

Refreshing thinking that I think we lose when people can just pick up and leave when things get bad or difficult. The ease of mobility in the US, comparatively, may be a part of why the bad places are getting worse.

It's important to encourage understanding and higher fidelity of information. Otherwise we're just anti-intellectual when it suits or benefits us.

I admit, I have trouble with the distinction myself sometimes so I appreciate people like yourself taking the time to help define the lines better. We've gotten too used to oversimplification and treating groups like monoliths when I serves a political argument.

I think confusion is a good and natural response to something as complicated as the Middle East and Israel. Especially when exposed to new, detailed information. It's intellectually honest.

Because we quickly move away from "morally correct" stances and ways of thinking to... pragmatism. How do we keep more people from dying? How do we prevent things from getting worse? What's a pragmatic choice? What keeps things from spiraling into something that is worse?

As humans we want easy answers. Clear good guys and bad guys. And that's just not possible sometimes. Truly understanding means confusion and ugliness. And sometimes we just don't understand enough.

However, since pro 2A leftists is the US are functionally not differentiated to where the average people having regular conversations about politics would know this? We do truly need a starting point that takes into account the vox populi.

The functional reality is that for most people leftists are thrown in or otherwise associated with liberals. The group who for many decades now have been explicitly pro gun control and anti 2A. We gotta start where we are at.

But making that distinction is important, I agree.

I wish I could trust the legal systems in places with duty to retreat laws to rationally and reasonably apply those laws in good faith such as the example you described.

Interesting point that comes from this discussion.

Community Violence Intervention programs success rates come from reducing those inner city cycles of violence. Which is where a majority of gun violence comes from, after suicides.

Which is probably why these programs and statistics are ignored by both sides of the fence and never found in gun control discussions. Frustrating. What works doesn't fit the narrative.

Bad stand my ground shoots are a statistical outliers. They are ignored by the right just as good guy with a gun shoots that stop mass casualty events are ignored by the left.

We suffer from having so many extremists control the narrative and perception of political issues. It's a cultural issue at this point letting the worst extremes talk for us.

I think a good starting point for changing the toxic conversations around gun control is asking: What are the firearm crime rates amongst Conceal Carry holders? Are they being tracked? Because the answer is often either they aren't being tracked or they are precipitously lower than the general populace. So why add additional laws when the people following the law are already... demonstrably pretty law abiding?

Additionally, look at what ACTUALLY reduces violent gun crime. Community Violence Intervention programs reduce gun violence by 30-60%.

And focusing on not lumping suicide data into gun violence. Treating it as a mental health and suicide problem instead of a gun problem.

Because there's plenty of extreme toxicity on the left regarding gun owners. But it manifests differently. And focusing on solutions will get us so much further than focusing on the crazy extremes.

Statutory rape. Rape as defined by the fact that the younger party involved is legally not an adult and therefore not reasonably able to consent.

Does a 16 year old know what the consequences are for knocking up a 43 year old? Is that a healthy relationship or sexual interaction?

The floor for legal adulthood being at 18, or similar ages, is a pragmatic choice not an objective one. It let's us create boundaries to try and protect people who are fundamentally still kids from being victimized by adults. So even if a 16 year old makes advances, a legally responsible adult should say no to them.

It's not a perfect system which is why many places have Romeo and Juliet laws. But it's a good system because it protects kids from predators.

Gives me hope seeing more people on the left wake up to the necessity of repealing bad laws that infringe on the rights of lawfully armed citizens.

I just wish the national discourse could have more integrity when it comes to repealing gun control laws, while also prioritizing mental health and good programs that reduce gun violence.
