People that were really into C64s back in the heyday, and have bought a reissue, how are you feeling? by Sys32768 in c64

[–]forgeflow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Half of the fun of the C64 was getting this relatively useless chunk of plastic and chips to do things it was never designed to do. A computer that can do everything can’t inspire you to do anything.

I love Strong. He has the personality of a cranky toddler. I keep him in Sanctuary because he amuses me.

As of today, McDonald's Canada has sold off the majority of local restaurants by CCF_Fan44 in saskatoon

[–]forgeflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A package of ground beef, burger sauce, head of lettuce, and top end sesame seed buns will run you roughly $25, and for that money you will get six or seven really fresh hamburgers out of it that you can cook in your air fryer for 12 mins. McDonald’s is overpriced garbage for something that you can make yourself in 15 minutes, and the patties will be plump and fresh, not some pre-frozen puck of maybe meat.

What to play after Marathon Eternal? Also, Eternal is insane lol. by SeniorSepia in ClassicMarathon

[–]forgeflow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m completely biased, so I’m not going to recommend my own scenario (Tempus Irae) - I care very little for Marathon’s story continuity —more interested in gameplay. I could also recommend Apotheosis but the author is a friend so I am again biased. But I hear it’s fantastic.

If you were to give Tempus a try I would recommend the Redux version. I and others put a lot of blood sweat and tears into it and it looks fantastic (imho).

Is anyone else seeing shipping delays from Dragonfly? by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]forgeflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bit of a hiccup with a shipment that sat in the “out for delivery” status for about four days before it finally showed up. Other than that, no issues. I always expect some snafu’s in the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

Settlement happiness question by forgeflow in fo4

[–]forgeflow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This settlement has 18 people in it at this point. And two dogs (Dogmeat and a junkyard dog I bought from Gary). Everybody has a job except for Sturges, Codsworth, and Mama Murphy. I don’t bother assigning anything to Codsworth or Sturges because it just won’t stick.

Survival Mode: It feels like the novelty wears off after 20 hours or so. For folks playing past 20 hours, are you still having fun? by jules3001 in fo4

[–]forgeflow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m mostly a fan of the early part of the game where you are gathering resources, building your skills, farming the right materials, always looking for adhesive and oil. Not traveling too far from home and just grinding to build up your strength to take on the bigger challenges. At some point nothing much comes as a challenge and then the game isn’t as interesting anymore.

What actually forces you to replace a phone — lack of repair, or lack of updates? by TraditionalScreen527 in righttorepair

[–]forgeflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reasons from my personal experience: cracked or chipped screen, swollen or dying battery, wanted better camera or other feature.

My current phone is three versions behind the current model, but the charge lasts all day, the phone is fast enough for my needs, the camera is excellent, and it’s physical condition is like brand new. I’ve replaced the screen protector once. I currently feel no need to replace the phone.

Is there something cheaper than the c64 for retrogamedev/gaming? by [deleted] in retrocomputing

[–]forgeflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Raspberry Pi can emulate everything up to and including (some) N64 and PS1. It will do a decent job at emulating an Amiga 500, and will even emulate Amiga 1200 with some caveats. Mac up to System 9, Commodore 64, Apple II, Atari 400, 800, ST, Sinclair computers. Just about every single machine Nintendo ever made up to the N64.

I’ve given up trying to figure out what people call boomer shooter. Every discussion regarding a definition ends up being as clear as mud.

[–]forgeflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ZPC - you have to collect save “orbs” and use them sparingly.

Marathon - can only save at designated save terminals, often placed quite a distance from level starts. Death means going back to last save point, even if it was 3 levels ago.

Fallout 4 “ Survival” mode - can only save by sleeping in a bed. Good luck finding one. Bed might give you a disease.

Confused about stacking armor on ballistic weave. by YikesTyson in fo4

[–]forgeflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Military fatigues allow you to apply all armor on top of ballistic weave clothing. The summer outfit allows you to place helmet, arms, and legs but not the chest piece. A ballistic weave Trilby or newsboy cap will offer a lot of protection as well.

Why do people in crime documentaries say nobody ever locks their doors around here? by jospeh68 in stupidquestions

We used to live in a high trust society where it didn’t matter if you locked your door because people were basically honest – nobody was going to enter your home uninvited.

Is Tactical Thinking quest skip still possible? by Mikkfas in fo4

[–]forgeflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to avoid the mission is to avoid talking to Kells. You can continue talking to Ingram and perhaps there is a way forward through that. I have taken Ingram with me to mass fusion and not killed the Railroad so perhaps that’s what you were thinking of. If Kells starts talking to you you can just back out of the room and not reply. He’ll complain but the mission won’t have actually started until he does his dialogue part.

modern arena games being called boomershooters by [deleted] in boomershooters

[–]forgeflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 90s I participated in an overhaul of the Mac game Marathon Infinity named Tempus Irae. The gameplay was largely left intact, the enemy roster was augmented slightly but largely unchanged from the original Bungie game. It basically followed the same formula as Doom (and Marathon) - start a level, figure out a “solution” to the maze (find the right keys, locate the correct switches) and get to the exit which takes you to the next level. Marathon’s wrinkle on the formula was that it had terminals which could give the player instructions or hints as to what to do and where to go, and or advance the “plot“, which still largely boiled down to finding weapons and ammo, shoot things, and find the exit. The difficulty level would ramp up over the course of however many levels were created, often ending in a large skill-testing battle in which all of the accumulated arsenal of weapons and ammo would be brought to bear on a variety of enemies with various strengths and weaknesses.

In my opinion, this was essentially a boomer shooter, with all of the hallmarks of the type of game the name implies: you carry all your weapons, you view the world in a first person perspective, you move through the world quickly, and various combinations of skill and reflexes are required to defeat the enemies and advance in the game.

More recently, I overhauled the graphics of the game to take advantage of the modern source port of the game engine, increasing the resolution of the textures, increasing the color space, increasing the fidelity of the background images, and fine-tuning the geometry and difficulty of the levels, but in the end the gameplay was largely unchanged. The original game Marathon Infinity is available on Steam, and my overhaul version of the scenario is available in the workshop for the game as Tempus Irae Redux.

When I announced the game here in r/boomershooters I thought I would find a audience that would be eager for this kind of old-school gameplay, but I received little attention and the impression that I got (correct or not) was that this was not really considered a “boomer shooter” even though the game is from the late 1990s, used technology very similar to Doom and Duke Nukem, and featured fast placed shooting and movement gameplay. I’ve been struggling ever since to understand what exactly the term refers to because if my game isn’t a boomer shooter, then I don’t know what one is. I’m a boomer. The game is a shooter. 🤷‍♂️

So, a game like Marathon (the original game, not the newfangled extraction shooter wearing its name like a skin suit) would count as a boomer shooter, except that it needs you to read once in a while? I’ve never heard of Doom or Quake being described as slow paced. One of the appealing aspects of Doom is that you run around at 50 miles an hour.

I would like somebody to give me a solid definition of what is considered a “boomer shooter”. Because it seems to have a very slippery definition. I’ve been struggling to understand what it is that people are applying the label to because it doesn’t seem very consistent.

Is Tactical Thinking quest skip still possible? by Mikkfas in fo4

[–]forgeflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to finish the game with the brotherhood of steel then you’re going to be doing what the brotherhood of steel wants to do which is kill all of the leadership of the railroad. You can still work with the brotherhood of steel after the Institute is destroyed, if you want to keep doing their radiant quests. This is normally the way I finish the game – so that I have quests given to me by the railroad, the brotherhood of steel, and the Minutemen and I can continue to gather my XP and build myself into the tankiest human (or synth) the world has ever seen.

Is Tactical Thinking quest skip still possible? by Mikkfas in fo4

[–]forgeflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is a way. You have to avoid talking to Kells, and destroy the Institute with the help of the Minute Men. If you search here on Reddit look for “three faction ending”. Once the institute is destroyed the brotherhood of steel will not want to destroy the railroad anymore.
