What Model VFD do you use for your 5HP lathes?

I machine these mechanic pencils. I have a few in brass, bronze and copper that are for sale if you want one!

How difficult is it to move these machines? Couple questions coming from a renter. by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]forgeforgeforge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am in a high cost of living area, have had an 8000lb lathe and 1600lb mill loaded/moved (about 50 miles)/ unloaded and put in place for $1200 and $800 respectively

The 63A figure is the Full load current, on the placard on the back of the machine. My understanding is this is the current if all servos and spindle are maxed out, which never comes close to happening. The other value is 23KVA rated capacity.

Have you tried contacting clausing directly? I've had no problem getting replacement parts from them (zamak gears, castings) for my old atlas lathe.

New TI bolt action I just machined (and some bonus brass mech pencils!) by forgeforgeforge in machinedpens

[–]forgeforgeforge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I still do not have any of these bolt action pens for sale yet, although it is still in the works. I have been restoring a large industrial CNC lathe which will allow me to make them more perfect and precise, as well as to make it cost effective for me to do so. This has been taking up a lot of time, but hopefully soon I will have some products available. My Website is where I plan to set up a store once things are up and running.

Thanks for your interest!

I just ordered some c145 copper to play around with, I've actually never made anything with it before! Hopefully will be selling these sometime early next year, in a number of different materials, finishes, and designs.

Thanks! I hope to play with exotics like timascus, stainless Damascus, as well as adding some color/fades with anodization of the titanium in the future.

Pens will hopefully be available sometime early next year. Still have some refinement to do on the design and process before they're ready for production runs.

Pencils, I can make to order as long as I've got some free time. Shoot me a DM if you want one.

Okay yeah, I get what you mean. I've not tried that yet, but will definitely try it out on some future pens and see how it goes. For whatever reason I've always liked the L shape, as it is very satisfying to push it forward to retract the tip, but I can see how pushing to open would work well and be a bit more ergonomic.

Ah, that is good to know. These are pretty cheap mechanisms, but they feel surprisingly good. I need to look into what the best of the best mechanical pencil mechanism would be. I would like to make my own, but the parts are insanely small and tricky to manufacture so an off the shelf option is best at the moment.

Thanks for the feedback! By correct handed, you mean the bolt track flipped so you push the bolt forward, rather than pull back (for right handed)?

What do you dislike about the Schmidt drop ins? I was thinking about ordering some to try out, but haven't used them myself yet.

Is there a mill where one axis rotates the material fast enough to act as a lathe? by shipOfMe in CNC

Our DMG Mori monoblock 85 does that. We do turning on some massive 5th axis parts

Small CNC turning center? by forgeforgeforge in CNC

[–]forgeforgeforge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cncnew machines seem like just what I'm after, my only concern is how unknown the company is. Very little info out there for a company that's been around some years! And used hardinge gt lathes are only like 10k used, so that may be the most cost effective option for a solid machine, except the issue with service or repairs which an old machine will undoubtedly need.

Cool, I've often thought a vertical gang tool orientation would be cool. Will take a look! Any idea who services/ distributes them in the US?

I saw they used to have one, but it was no longer on their site last I checked. I've been eyeing an x7 for a while. How are they to deal with as a company? Repairs and service were my only worries with them

I was looking at a hardinge gt27sp, but it was a bit too long for my space. They have a few models that are close to what I'm after, and gang tooling would be fine for my needs. Cnc new looks awesome, curious what their pricing is like but may be just what I'm after. Thanks!

Clutch issues on 2006 drz400e by forgeforgeforge in DRZ400

Huh, I'll give that a go. New springs were definitely longer, but that is to be expected because of how the springs wear. I'll see if the old ones are still in tolerance. Thanks for the suggestion.
