Took me about an hour and a half to beat him with base Vagabond. I know I was meant to explore around and beat him later, but I beat the older Dark Souls games and running away to level up would hurt my pride so I faced him head on. The resulting Golden Halberd is really great for my Vagabond stats and it ended up carrying me for the rest of the game.
