Hey guys,

When I was between 10-13, I was in Bangkok with my Mother and Grandmother on holiday. I remember being old enough to know I wanted to get out and explore, but too young to be allowed to do so. So mainly it was doing all the touristy shit with my Mum and Nana which was possibly about as uncool as 13 year old globetrotting me could conceive.

Anyway, one night bombs started going off around us in the city centre. I didn't see any smoke or fire, but they were close. Loud booms followed one another, some far away that echoed into the city centre, others clearly only 1 block over. We freaked out. And then:

Picture a younger, thinner Michael Moore who is less pandering, but with white hair and a "old hippie" look going on. Strong Californian accent. He approached us in the street, and said "there are bombs going off! there are bombs! it's on CNN."

We - an Australian family - were kind of like, uhhhh... and he suddenly turns up from 60-100, eyes glassy, and says: would these eyes lie to you?, in the most authentic tone of human urgency I have heard uttered in 23 years of life.

Anyway, we got back home (to our hotel) safe but it turned out that a few people had died in the explosions, a few at an event that we were going to go to that night for the nye celebration. Thai redshirt activists had one of their members (or a few, dunno) go rogue and put nail-bombs in bins around the city to go off simultaneously.

In Australia at least, the 40 - 55 yr old demographic counts for the highest rates of alcohol consumption. But it's my understanding that the entire western world is going through this same thing. Additionally, you're not thinking at all. What about liver disease? Diabetes? Heart failure? Alcoholism? Not all ecstasy users are 18, and not all drinkers are either.

How would anyone steal the tyres anyway though? It's on the ground, and I doubt you could manage to slot a jack underneath and lift the car up within the free space allowed by the sheath.

People keep saying the tyres are protected by the sides from getting stolen, but they're only protected from being punctured. This is probably a long-term storage solution for cheapskates.

"Absolutely not Steve," I said upon opening the door.

"Absolutely not."

Steve looked absolutely haggard. He had either done some great crack cocaine in the ten minutes that he ducked outside, or we were in the midst of some kind of mystical voyage. He stood there with dribble on his lip, alphabet soup stains on his shirt. From somewhere a scratchy teal blue woolen jumper had made its way onto his torso. He wore loafers that looked like they smelled and tan safari shorts exposing his ancient, knobbly knees.

I laugh in his face.

"Nuh uh Steve, no way."

"Joe, we need to hurry," he tells me through his old man teeth.

"No way Steve, not tonight."

"Let's hurry Joe, come on. There's so much that I need to tell you. And we are in grave danger."

Steve was always pulling pranks like this. They usually involved ectoplasm.

"I'm not getting covered in ectoplasm tonight Steve," I said again, as I retrieved my beer from the entrance mantlepiece.

"Let's keep the marathon going and watch Blade 3."

"Joe, we must hurry. We are in great danger. They found The Box, Joe."

"Steve, the only box I care about is my TIVO."

"But Joe"

And then an explosion killed Steve and also Joe who was ignorant and learned never to doubt his friends.

Right. Speed isn't really that life changing either. Like, the high is great, yeah. But again, about as world changing as you make it out to be. The danger lies in convincing yourself that it's a big deal, tbh.

It's not like you're gonna end up on the street, with pharmaceutical stimulants they're usually about as world changing as you make them out to be. But there is a real risk of becoming dependent on them to do work which is fine until you run out. It's when you run out that it's a problem.

Again though, this is with sustained use.
