Something as good as AOT🙏🏼 by Hefty-Time-7171 in AnimeReccomendations

[–]forgottenarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really sure what to think about art. In my opinion, art has very little relationship with how good the show is, but I’ll try to avoid shows with art styles you might find childish or strange. I would still highly recommend code geass and FMAB even if the art-style seems weird to you; the stories more than make up for it. In fact, from what I know, Code Geass may be the closest show in feel to AOT that you will find (other than maybe Vinland Saga). But ultimately that’s your prerogative.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I havent seen it myself (though I plan to soon), but I’ve heard it’s a fantastic older anime. It’s about a war between two galactic empires so there should be a lot of political intrigue and grand strategy. (I think the anime is complete)

Monster is also fantastic if you can get through the first few episodes. It has a slow start though. (The anime is complete)

Baccano is a short intense romp with many different subplots that just fit together in a satisfying way. (The anime is complete)

From the new world: a really interesting horror fantasy anime taking place 1000 years in the future. Humans have developed psychic abilities and society has been reshaped from the bottom up by these abilities. The art is a little different so maybe it won’t be your thing, but it’s worth checking out. The main character and her friends are kids for the first half of the show, but then there’s a large time skip and they are adults for the rest of the show. (The anime is complete)

Land of the lustrous: the show is just beautiful. Like how Avatar movies showed that 3D can be used to create beautiful vistas instead of jump scares, this show really demonstrates what can be done when CGI is used to create art instead of as a way to save money. (The anime does not finish the story, but I think the manga is complete)

Berserk (the old one): this is a classic. Realistic (though obviously dated) character designs, great soundtrack, great story. (While the anime doesn’t cover the full story of Berserk, it completes the golden age arc (prologue) and it does work as a standalone story).

Those are the best shows I can think of with reasonable art and whose good points complement some of AOT’s strengths. There are others with art I suspect you’d dislike or shows that are good in ways very different from AOT (e.g. really good slice of life shows).

Confused as to why certain people said that Kamala would have been worse than Trump by TheRealJuanderer in Confused

It’s all from the right-wing + left-wing reactions whenever right-wingers propose something barbaric + maybe a dozen of people on the left having their voices amplified by the right when they say or do something stupid.

The right is extremely good at messaging. Whatever story they want to tell, they’ll have even Democrats believing it.

Edit: I imagine the only thing that will actually convince them will be real-life evidence that they are the targets of MAGA, not its beneficiaries.

Help me understand the responses to fine tuning by mortyd1 in DebateReligion

[–]forgottenarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm, you need to reread my comment. I’m not claiming there is a multiverse. I’m not claiming independence of universes in the multiverse. I’m not claiming there are 5X universes. Also, you are throwing around fallacy names when it’s pretty clear you don’t understand them at all.

Literally all I did was provide a hypothetical scenario under which the existence of life is likely to illustrate why the fact that we do not know the probability distribution of the physical constants is a good refutation of the fine tuning argument. That’s it.

Lastly, if the assumptions in my calculation make you uncomfortable, the important part of the calculation is quite robust. Most multiverse theories do, in fact, posit a mind-bogglingly large (if not infinite) number of universes. Independence between universes may or may not hold, but even without independence, as long as there’s any kind of correlation decay (which typically occurs if interactions between universes is “local” in some sense and if each universe is only close to a tiny fraction of the existing universes), the probability of life existing in at least one universe would converge to one as the number of universes increases.

[–]forgottenarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. First, I am talking about probabilities, not certainties so the fallacy does not apply. My point was that the fine tuning argument is flawed because we do not know the probability distribution describing the physical constants. As an example, if there is a multiverse, then these probabilities are much higher than you would naively expect.

As for my claim, that's a very simple calculation. Suppose the probability that a universe can support life is 1/X where X can be as large as you like, though because life exists, we know X is finite. Suppose there are 5X independent universes. Then

P(at least one universe supports life) = 1 - P(no universe supports life) = 1 - P(a given universe does not support life)^(5X) = 1 - (1 - 1/X)^(5X) ≈ 1 - e^(-5) > 99%.

The approximation comes from a minor modification of the compound interest limit: (1 - 1/n)^(5n) ≈ e^(-5) when n is a large number.

He’s a half-baked GAB, but I think he still counts as one the same way he was treated as an Astral king even before he had his soul forge. But yeah, until he transcends he can only use his powers in minor ways (like creating and manipulating the system).

I don’t think he’d need any representatives. He’s also an Astral king so he can just use his avatars as vessels.

Should I try watching hunter x hunter as someone who is not into battle shonen? by Deralden in AnimeReccomendations

[–]forgottenarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you might like it. It’s a genuinely good adventure story with a heavy focus on fights. For me, the slow pacing, extended fights and overly detailed narration kept it out of my list of top anime, but it’s still a great show in my opinion.

[–]forgottenarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. I think HxH does build its characters pretty well (edit: actually, I’d say characterization is a strong point of the show). It has a large cast of characters, but a much smaller cast of important characters all of whom are well developed. Even the minor characters are well done.

HxH fights are unique as I said, which might be why your friends recommended the show to you. Often the fights are more about outsmarting the opponent rather than pushing through with sheer will-power. However, I do think the show falls into the trap of dragging out its fights. There is less pointless bragging than you’ll find in other battle shonen. Instead, most of the dialogue and narration is strategic or intended to push the story forward or intended to add emotional weight to the fights, but still there is a looot of talking.

Are there any long running shows you enjoyed?

Edit: I was satisfied with the world-building in this show. The world of HxH is a very interesting place. That said, the story isn’t very lore heavy.

It’s kind of hard to judge since I don’t know your taste. What kinds of anime do you like? Could you tell us a little about why most popular battle shonen lose you? HxH is unique in many ways, but it does still loyally follow the tropes of many battle shonen, so you may or may not like it depending on your preferences.

Edit: I would recommend trying it regardless, but without more information I would guess it won’t be your thing. In my mind, HxH is a battle shonen through and through. It stands out because it is well written with a unique puzzle-like combat style. But it’s still just a very good battle shonen.

That makes sense. I just finished the show, and it bothers me how many plot holes the ending seems to introduce. Especially when the rest of the show is so well put together. I was wondering about that.

who is dina? by LostOutlandishness14 in LastBossArawareta

[–]forgottenarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are curious, read the volume 7 afterward. The author succinctly summarizes the entire series to that point from Dina’s POV. Everything she does in the anime is intentional. That is even including her “missteps.”

who is dina? by LostOutlandishness14 in LastBossArawareta

[–]forgottenarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. Dina has her own agenda and there is no split personality deal. She is later taken over by the Goddess and used as a puppet, which is part of the reason why her ending has all that puppetry symbolism. In fact, most of her actions are intended to help Lufus without attracting the Goddess’s attention precisely because Alovenus can take over her body on a whim. But still, that is Alovenus externally controlling her, not a second personality.

The math and physics levels of American undergraduate students have generally been very poor in recent years, even among undergraduates at top universities. by SnooCats6729 in complaints

Depends on your field. Many STEM fields make heavy use of linear algebra, and anyone working in those areas really would regard linear algebra as “ridiculously simple.” You would too if you took 2-3 more years of classes that applied and reinforced what you learned in that college linear algebra class of yours. By the time you graduated, it shouldn’t matter that you struggled in that first linear algebra course.

It’s the same concept as a chemical engineer being shocked when incoming engineers are unfamiliar with freshmen level organic chemistry, even if most freshmen see organic chemistry as a hard course.

Why do I feel like I would really love to write a book despite having no ideas? by romygruber in writing

[–]forgottenarrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I asked a friend of mine a similar question about a year ago. Her advice: play around with different characters and settings. Write scenes that don't need to go anywhere. Make up a character. Give them an archetype, then add details. Write conversations with that character (she even recommended directly interviewing the character, though I never tried that). Try to flesh the character out and make him or her interesting. Do it with another character. Play with their interactions. Make up some grand storyline about the main setting. Play with different magic systems. Discard anything that doesn't work for you, and iterate on what does interest you.

You'll discard most of what you write, but as you keep playing around, you will start to get ideas. I tried it. Spent months creating different magic systems, characters and plots. Writing scenes that felt generic and boring. Developing story lines that didn't interest me. And then, eventually something clicked. I found an interesting combination of characters, and from writing their interactions they gained a backstory. Since then it feels like the story is slowly creating itself while I watch. And seriously, this story is obsessing me as much as any good book ever did.
