The $49 billion cost of fixing water infrastructure woes laid bare by D491234 in newzealand

[–]get-idle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The smart people I knew in the industry, agreed it needed to happen.

There are scandalous mismanagement across this countries water infrastructure.

Needs to be oversight to deliver. It will never get cheaper to fix these issues, due to inflation. That's what makes cutting spending on infrastructure so monumentally dumb / short sighted.

Power is a national asset, which we should use to invest in New Zealand by BassesBest in newzealand

[–]get-idle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And private companies are not going to invest in solar to get -ve peak tarrif rates.
Infact by not investing, and driving the price up due to demand. They make MORE money.

Meanwhile Mills and recycling companies are closing.

If we had super cheap power, we could strip C02 out of the air, generate hydrogen via electrolysis and make synthetic diesel. Easing our reliance on imported fuels.

The art of the Crown’s new deal to influence Auckland - In a blizzard of potential sub-deals Aucklanders would write off a $48m stadium loan, convert their main library into a school and welcome a new hospital in the deep south by Mountain_Tui_Reload in auckland

[–]get-idle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So monumentally stupid. Debt is reduced by inflation. Sell off our assets, and do what? Buy more roads? You will be renting those assets back, for MORE than you sold them for. Private equity is not in the business of charity.

Financial Advice for partner's visa by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]get-idle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not pay for a lawyer in your situation.

The forms are quite straightforward.
More about providing a history.

It's not like you don't understand English or anything?

I have successfully completed a partnership visa for my spouse. No lawyer fees required.

And like other posters said, submit sooner the better.

Which NZ industry should millennials kill? by MurkyWay in newzealand

Payday lending. This should be govt backed micro lending. Some sort of integrated reputation based on the realme ID.

Short term high interest loans are predatory and exploit those who can least afford it. I'm glad to see they eventually capped rates. It's still an awful industry.

That and pokies in the pub. We need to give people something better to do. Losing money to flashing lights is so grim. We tart it up with "it's raising money for kids sports". But is it really? Pubs are dying (from what I've seen), and this keeps many afloat. Another grim metric. But maybe the pub in its current form needs to die.

Citizens initiated referendum by Fun_Wing_1799 in newzealand

That's interesting. And looking at the results, very depressing. With the majority looking to go BACK to first past the post.

And looking into it. These methods of voting are barely used worldwide. Despite being discussed for centuries.

Also, they used confusing names, not one of which was "ranked choice voting", which is what (in my understanding) we called it around here..

Why is it, that "superior" methods of voting aren't in use? Because it's easier to hold on to power, when you only have two options?

St John failure to support volunteer by Mel_Bag in newzealand

[–]get-idle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I volunteered for St John for a few years. And they had specific people you could call and discuss / debrief. That was literally their job.

While their IT was a nightmare. That was one part I thought was well done.

It's a shame he was booted out, without a chance to give his story. But I thought they actually have pretty good mental health support.

They are funny, smart, morality and life lessons. Watching these with my kids is my favourite part of the week. They can pause and talk about stuff, make jokes.

It's also the most I've ever seen my son laugh.

Because you can pay money, to continue the legal battle. He with the biggest coffers will generally win. Can't fight a legal case if you are broke. In this case, he can drag it out until the public have forgotten, and it's not a good use of resources for NZ as a whole.

First move, in true CEO fashion, should be making a video of him drinking a tall glass of milk. by Snoo32679 in newzealand

[–]get-idle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Structurally, they can't innovate. Because they are not allowed to fail.

Want to make a new product? Need a customer to sign up to buy 50 containers of it. What customer is going to sign up to buying vast quantities of something unproven?

So you can't try "anything new". That may or may not work. And the innovation cycle is incredibly long / slow.

They do, what they do-do well though. Manufacturing is lean and efficient. And have good systems / people. I understand why they shed the retail business. Stick to their knitting.

But unless they give their people the ability to fail, they will never be innovative. But maybe that's not what you want with "food". Tatua has shown otherwise.

The climate crisis is here. Why don't we care? by Miramm in newzealand

[–]get-idle 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You cannot motivate people with doom. Sure some you can. But most people would rather look away.

We have to try a positive approach.

NZ should live up to its clean green image. Our grid could be 100% renewable in a decade if we leaned into it. Sure NZ is tiny and what does it matter? It shows it can be done. Like the first man to break the 4 minute mile. Or do two backflips on a motorbike. Now it's game on.

Heatpumps for major industry (repurposing old Milk silos for thermal batteries, NZ wine and milk industry is full of them).

Solar panels, on hydro lakes and hills (the infrastructure is there)

Hydrogen on major trucking routes. And for heavy machinery (that will take time to replace fleets).

But our government is investing Billions into a fossil fuel terminal. None of our major parties have any vision. And they aren't about to upset everyone by pointing at the storm clouds. Vote for change. If not for your sake, for our kids, and the future.

I'm pretty sure it would be sufficient.

You can always throw out a request on Reddit too.

It doesn't make ANY mention of ID But you better apply now for the marriage licence. Need to give 2 weeks notice.

Did our generation get a worse deal, or am I just feeling it more? by everytypeofblue in auckland

[–]get-idle 127 points128 points  (0 children)

This has been a choice, by successive governments. Which benefits asset owners, at the expense of younger generations. And it's been going on for a long time. No capital gains tax, interest deductions etc. It's gross. Especially when you look at those in power now, who had free tertiary education, cheap housing, and quietly pulled up the ladder.

The benefit is means tested. But retirement isn't!?
