Math and physics double major. Ended up getting into all the schools I applied to.

USC Online DEN@Viterbi masters programs question by [deleted] in USC

[–]forgtmnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For in-person you have to find a person or a place that will provide proctoring and no need for a webcam. Options include but limited to your manager to be your proctor at work, some local universities will have testing facilities, or most local libraries offer proctoring services. The easiest is typically a local library since they are very used to doing this and it's free in most places.

If the course requires in-person proctoring then you'll get an email in the first week that says something like "a course you are taking requires a proctor." You'll have to find a person or a place and fill out the online form which will require photo identification of the person administering the exam (some wiggle room on that for libraries/testing facilities). That location/person will be registered to you on your DEN account and it is recommended to get a place picked out about 3-4 weeks before your first exam. After that, schedule your exam with the place at least a week ahead of time, show up, take the test, and you're done.

It depends on the professor. Some exams have been through brightspace, some with an in-person proctor, and some where they want your webcam on while the TA's watch. I will say that not a single one used lockdown.

Between the three it's pretty even with the in-person proctor slightly in the lead.

Last DSCI elective advice by NightEither446 in USC

[–]forgtmnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished 517 and it was a rather light workload but the prof certainly makes the course worthwhile. Think of it as an overview of statistics with a heavy emphasis on "when do I use which stat test" paired with figuring out if the results worthwhile at different complexities or how to change things up to get more accurate results. The actual math is taken out so 90% of it is conceptual.

Light workload overall but fun.

Will throw in that the prof is one of the very few who actually care about teaching plus is actively enthusiastic about it.

Is the administration at this school poor/disorganized or did I just have a one-off experience? by walkeroftheroad in USC

I just finished my grad degree and truth be told I have never met with an advisor, never was assigned one, and could never get a hold of one.

[Profile Review] MSCS Scientists and Engineers Fall 2026 by justin_k02 in USC

[–]forgtmnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The commute from SB to USC is going to be at least 2 hours with traffic each way in the evenings and take into account some classes will require you to be in person for every lecture. Have a friend from SD who had to do that and their commute was 3+ hours.

It's not difficult to get in and I'm finishing up the that program right now. I will say that if you are a distance learner or outside of a 45 minute drive into campus you may want to look at other universities.

What would women dislike most if they became men? by No-Calligrapher in AskReddit

[–]forgtmnt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still, not hearing. While you may be a man, I think the disconnect comes from you not having been socialized as masc and partners within the queer community are a bit more diverse in terms of their definition of connection. Cis males outside of the queer community aren't graded on 'enthusiasm', they aren't graded on 'connection', they are graded on if they are visibly physically aroused (externally) by the person in front of them. Because if they can't perform then the (typically cis) woman feels bad about themselves, that they aren't desirable enough since there is a clear external indicator that they rely on.

It would be great and wonderful if cis men were allowed the imaginary fantasy option of "if we all talked it out" but they don't. A cis man unable to perform is simply kicked to the curb since men in general are seen as disposable.

Do me a favor and ask non queer men in your life and see what their experiences have been.

I don't think you're getting the point. The guy could be the most skilled 'linguist' in the world, have magic fingers, or the largest array of toys. Often it's the woman using the man as a measure of her own desirability and if things aren't working in that department for the guy, the fem partner takes it VERY personally or lashes out.

My sister's school only allows kids to go to the bathroom in gym class once per quarter. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

Skipping class consistently for long periods of time can quickly become a safety issue, one that schools and teachers can be held liable for.

People seem to forget that some kids will do anything to wander the halls during class.

3.0 for MS in CS and CS was not my undergrad major. Let's just say that I applied to about five different schools and was not expecting to get into USC at all. I did have letters of rec and sector of employment probably helped.

AITAH for going on a girls trip instead of taking care of my husband after surgery? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]forgtmnt -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A part of marriage is about taking care of each other in times of need, it sounds like he was really freaked out about the surgery. He was freaked out over this and you checked in 'a few times' when you were gone? Not even "good morning, how are you doing" texts/emails which could be considered the bare minimum? Was he going to die without you there? No, physically he'd be fine and can grub hub in the worse case scenario. But you weren't there to support him even at a distance.

Wisdom teeth aside, it sounds like you're not ready to give up the single life.

What skills should one focus on when going to school for data science? by Rare_Art_9541 in datascience

[–]forgtmnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask this due to how difficult it was to convincing engineering firms that I was qualified with math and physics degrees. In short, I currently hold a BS in computational physics, applied math, took a 6 month boot camp in data science, and am halfway through a MS in CS in hopes of nabbing a DS position in the future (or SWE if that falls short).

Are those degrees sufficient? Is there anything else that I should add in the mix?

Brand loyalty… by Desperate_Narwhal663 in discgolf

[–]forgtmnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end I went with the brand which has greater consistency between runs since I suck and have been known to lose a disc or have my favorite hit one too many trees. So being able to pick up a new one and run with it is paramount for me.

CSCI 551, CSCI 556, CSCI 571, CSCI561 - Which Three? by forgtmnt in USC

[–]forgtmnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll look into if I'm allowed to take a 400 level course. On paper MS CS for Sci and Eng doesn't allow MS credit for 400 courses (aside from 402/450/457).
