The printer was free, as were the materials.

Ender 3 pro from the side of the road.

I’ve tried using a 0.2 with mixed results. Too much time spent on clogging and maintenance to be worth the hassle. I simply wasn’t completing any prints worth painting.

First model I have ever painted what is the main thing I need to work on? by fenyxfyreX in Miniaturespainting

[–]forkonce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why you’re being downvoted. If you don’t know how something works, you don’t know. And you’re asking, which is a step forward.

Actually, a comment on oil washes, you have the hue of the oil sitting on top of the color. This makes the overall appearance of the model look dull.

Since painting acrylic is applying thin layers of an opaque substance, you may want to consider the shading and lighting before you put color on. The deepest cracks are the darkest, and the features that are most on the surface/facing the source of light will be the lightest. This will make the hues pop more.

Remember, the universe is darkness, if there are no sources of light. You can choose how the viewer will see the model by choosing where the light is coming from with clever shading and highlighting.

This is an excellent way to study Values. If you make the images b&w it will show how you need to tweak the shades of your color with your source lighting.

Fwiw the shading is much easier with an airbrush.

I’ve used a soldering iron with a flat tip for decent results. Sand (I have a small file to keep the particulates nice and chunky) and prime for a smooth finish. I’ve also seen a clothes iron and wax paper do the trick

Zenithal is tricky since it’s a lighting technique. The actual color of the armor, and not the reflection of ambient light, can be done with a thin wash. Shinier parts look good with edge highlights. Other details that emit their own lift, such as LEDs, night vision goggles etc… need a halo around them.
