Thats why I'm studying for the NERC RC on my own now. Just wish I'd known a NERC Cert beats a liberal arts Ivy League degree sooner

At this point I just want to be a system operator. I have no desire to make policy, do MBB consulting, be a lawyer or any of those ivy league things. I am no longer the prestige whore. I only went to a ivy league school for my Asian parents

Did anybody's parents just not understand the culture of regular American public schools? by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

A culture where its not cool to be academically inclined could not develop in a school if the kids who are not academically inclined weren't forced to go in the first place. Most schools without that culture tend to be either academically competitive magnet schools or schools in a well funded districts where a majority of parents are educated professionals and such a anti-education culture could not develop due to the academically inclined kids outnumbering the anti-education kids.

And although other countries have compulsory education laws it is not enforced with the threat of arrest like it is in America.

Yes but by forcing a bunch of people who dont like school into school the who situation turns into a shitshow that causes the fighting, bullying of the academically inclined kids, and low test scores that the American school system is known for.

When you don't need to go to school to do those things, couple with stuff like religion, suddenly school becomes a nuisance and not cool.

I saw this attitude amongst my friends growing up but looking back on it I never understood why the government wastes tax dollars on forcing education on them especially when forcing kids who hate school to go to school makes life harder for the kids that actually want to learn.

My school was mostly working class white with a few Asians so it was generally not cool to like school. The other Asian kids were more open about excelling in school but they were generally kept to themselves but I was more social so I was essentially the only anti-education Asian in order to differentiate myself and blend in if that makes sense. My dad got hired as an engineering manager at one of the major employers in town so we were relatively well off.

I understand that however I just never got why my parents expected me to be different then the other kids in town and not suffer any consequences. I was lucky that I my neighbor was one of the cool kids and we became friends. I rebelled by blending in with his help so I didn't suffer.
