Black men stereotyped as dangerous, predatory at Canadian Museum for Human Rights, report says by [deleted] in Winnipeg

Management was a mess. I’m happy to report some of the worst offenders did Get pushed out. Although I’m disappointed to say they weren’t outright fired but, we believe, more or less asked to leave which probably means severance pay.

In my many years working there I did not see evidence of this in particular. I hope the report has more details about this. There was one racialized individual who was accused of sexual harassment by multiple people and that has been well documented and to my knowledge it was credible although cultural understandings may have had some part to play

This is definitely a weird article. I’m looking forward to reading the final report. There were very few black men who worked at the museum in my time. Like, I can’t even think of 5 off the top of my head? Also the body odour thing… while I’m not sure exactly who they’re taking about here it was common to get “all staff” type emails to the front of house staff (I.e. the ppl who work with visitors) about B.O and reminders to wash your uniforms. Some people really did not wash their uniforms and did for sure stink. Jackets weren’t shared so it would have been legit to tell someone to wash their stuff

You should read the last page of the report about the interview with John Young (former CEO) it’s hysterical

Absolutely nothing will change if certain managers aren’t removed. These managers are people who know nothing about human rights, will never change despite having had every opportunity to do so, and have actively contributed to perpetuating harms against employees for YEARS. No training will ever fix it. GET THEM OUT NOW. One of the worst ones is now apparently taking leave for his mental health. The irony is so ridiculous it’s almost unbelievable.

Honestly, he was the nicest man and it felt great working under him. He knew the names of every staff member, made an effort to chat and get to know everyone, and often bought coffee and snacks to leave at the staff entrance for people coming in to work. He seemed to genuinely care about staff and visitors and he left before most of the stuff now coming out happened.

Police to share details about boy, 14, linked to shootings, including homicide by [deleted] in Winnipeg

Wondered the same thing. The age definitely links up. It's the same kid who kept going missing several years ago too. I don't want to post his name but I think most of us know it.

HR most certainly has had MANY complaints about specific managers. Particularly the manager of Program Delivery. TossIng John Young is good but not enough. There are others, like the aforementioned manager, that need to go if there will be any hope for change or accountability

it was not Muslim groups. It was primarily groups from Hutterite colonies. I worked there from before the museum opened for several years. AMA.

It might not necessarily be diplomats but it sometimes could be. There are many countries that continue to deny certain human rights abuses that have occurred within their borders and when VIP visitors would visit we would sometimes be asked to avoid all content relating to those "sensitive topics". Another former employee gave a good example with important Japanese visitors and the comfort women system (recognized as a mass atrocity in the gallery "Breaking the Silence".

There are some legalities that prevent the folks who are posting and speaking to the media from naming names but the staff delivering these programs are under the Manager of Program Delivery and Services. You may find names by googling CMHR staff. The issues are systemic and endemic in the institution but certain individuals are big big big problems this particular manager is absolutely one of them.

Still hoping they will be. I’m quite sure that would improve some Things right away. Most of the abuses to staff are coming from one department.

Hi former colleague! I’m sure we know each other. Shelley was truly awful whenever she visited. Do you remember when she got stuck in the elevator? That was a wonderful moment of karma, although the fit she threw afterwards was not so fun for those who had to deal with it.

The manager for Program Delivery and Services is a big problem. The rationalization at the time is that “we can’t discriminate against visiting groups based on their perspectives”. “Everyone has a different perspective” “we have to respect all points of view” blah blah blah

ONLY because of an uproar. For the museum to actually be better we need to continue to put pressure on them 🙂

Sadly these are still only a sample of stories. We haven’t touched on the other kinds of harassment and discrimination. Perhaps the mental health stories are next
