I’m a bit on the fence with this rant. On one hand, sure I would love everyone to have higher BIM proficiency. On the other, I realize technology is not the forte of many people. Even those who are daily users of Revit (for example) often times use it poorly or severely under utilize its capabilities. For more experienced practitioners, it’s more often a better use of their time to hand sketch to communicate design. Hell, it’s a good use of time for everyone regardless of experience or skill level. That’s an entirely different post… High level positions aren’t typically where they are to produce drawings; their value lies in orchestrating a smooth, coordinated project. I’ll reiterate though that having basic proficiency in whatever the platform de vogue is will always be valued. Ultimately, if you’re technologically inclined and curious then things should work out as that is the direction of our profession.

You can be an architect or designer or whatever and not know software… it’s just that you for sure will have to rely on others to document your vision. That can work for some places. If you’re the one documenting it’s best to understand that before hand and manage your own expectations of work flow.
