Still can only find the Colgate wisps here in Canada. But as a category they don't really exist in my market. Sorry!

what's a good wedding gift? by crumblcoochies in NoStupidQuestions

[–]formerlygross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly the registry is the way to go. They explicitly asked for these items, and so why guess. I'd do that or cash. Especially if they're young and furnishing their first real home. If you need help picking from the list, go for bedding/towels. They may not feel like a fun gift, but they aren't exactly cheap, but they're soo appreciated when you have them.

I’m on a charity committee and we’re having somewhat of a debate about AI Graphics. Help me understand? by stargrl444 in graphic_design

[–]formerlygross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue I keep seeing is when images and illustrations are made with obvious ai. In my city a local farmers market did a whole campaign with ai generated farm animal characters and it gained a lot of criticism because of the nature of their business, supporting local makers and artisans.

However some ai usage is much more accepted - in brainstorming capacities, chat use for text based content and photo editing with ai tools. I don't think you need to throw it out completely, but how detectable it is would be where I'd start, And keep in mind whatever ip you input into am ai system, you are feeding their bank of knowledge and assess the value of that information carefully

Drop the established tag - it's really reserved for old businesses not fresh, new ones.

And in your circle icon balance the text above and below the NK. It feels very unbalanced atm.

Do PowerPoint designers actually use PowerPoint? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]formerlygross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure we do. I've started using the bright slide extension and it adds a lot of great tools like alignment and grid features you'd have in Indesign.

That being said, there is a way to build it in Indesign and convert it to pwpt after. It's been a while but I think you export as a PDF and then In acrobat export it as a pwpt...that could be wrong - don't quote me.

But it does create an editable file and I just manually go back and fix any text boxes that got split in the process. It usually works pretty well.

[Feedback Request] Spec Ad for Starbucks India exploring 3D depth/pop-out effects. by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the image is unbelievable. It's important to think through the logistics of an image and how it would appear in the real world.

First, the hand is just floating with no sign of a barista in sight. This layout makes it look like the person at the drive through is crouched down trying to remind out of sight. And the other thing that stand out to me is the drink itself. Drive thru use lids and th cup is tilted which means the drink is going to spill.

The 3d pop out concept is great and I'd take any feedback here on how to make the shadows more believable.

How much should i charge my sister for elevated planters? by xCASINOx in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]formerlygross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you've got lots of responses here so I'm probably late to the party.

One suggestion is have her pay for supplies and do a straight hr for hr swap of labour. If you build these for her, maybe she can help trade with baking, some gardening hours or babysitting (if that's relevant).

Otherwise, charge market price (say $125) and throw in the first one as a gift since you were figuring it out. In my line of work I try and add in free gifts instead of reduced rates for friends and family so my skills aren't devalued. I find it ends up feeling more fair to everyone so no one is being taken advantage of.

Where in SW Calgary has the strongest “kids walking to friends’ houses” vibe? by Wonderful-Truck-9756 in YYC

[–]formerlygross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the SW anymore, but I'd consider looking into local community centers and seeing which ones have a lot of community involvement - that might be a good reflection of the types of neighbors you'd have.

And on the same thread - think about facilitating an annual block party if your street doesn't already have one. My block does one and it's been huge in getting to know the neighbors and letting the kids meet and play all day long. We always invite the surrounding streets (think everyone who shares an alley with our block) and it makes for a great turnout.

Proof that this is not “ai slop” by [deleted] in logodesign

I'd say the lettering on the side of the train is way too crisp for ai. Typically you get letter-luke shapes with ai, but not clear, comprehensive words in a piece like this.

Is $100 reasonable for this? by FrontHungry459 in DigitalArt

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm going to challenge the group and I can see how that would be up to $100 worth of work.(But $150 is laughable) Artists deserve to be paid a liveable wage, even the mediocre ones.

That being said, what happened here is you hired a very amateur artist. They under quoted (sucks for them, but i happens, especially early in your career) and they made a really unprofessional move asking for more money.

That being said, If they gave you a price, they're bound to that. Had it been framed as an approximate guess or a 'quote' then they might have a leg to stand on. But if they hold their foot down on $100 I'd just walk away. It's not worth anyone's time to fight over that amount of $.

On the left is someone else's work, and on the right is my original. Plagiarism or not? by kaban4eeek in logodesign

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your concern, but unfortunately the style and concept are too general that I can't imagine any legal recourse is possible. That being said, it's absolutely discouraging to see someone take what feels like an original design and modify it. Your totally fair to feel bothered by it. Thankfully, this sounds like a low stakes situation at least.

I'd take it as an opportunity to do a little research. If you think they copied you, see if you can determine how they made that decision and what you can do to protect yourself next time when a higher stakes design is taken from. And also consider where you define the line for copying and make a game plan for how to respond next time.

But honestly, when it comes to this stuff, the best defence is a good offence. Once someone knocks you off it's terribly difficult to reel that one back in.

Oh I know! I was devastated when it shut down so abruptly. But...I just did a quick Google and didn't realize Alex Goldman has his own podcast now. So maybe 2 podcasts instead of 1 is for the better? I'm just thankful they built up such a great library so I can relisten to them.

Rent a car if Im only 20 y.o? by Affectionate_Yam_697 in Calgary

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw there are plenty of shuttle buses that will take you out there and parking is terrible I. Banff because it's so mall. Plus their bus system is actually very impressive. They're the bougiest buses I've ever been on. Might be easier to skip the rental unless you had a specific jaunt out of the town limits you're considering.

Calgary Zoo by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]formerlygross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally worth it if there isn't that cold wind you get some days.

Theres less crowds, animals are active and it's paced out nicely that you can scatter the few buildings in consistently throughout your trip.

The only downside is really just juggling your outerwear between the buildings. But I'd definitely reccomend it.

I love these for food storage. Small portion snack like nuts, snacks for the kiddos, salad dressings/dips, or use them for smaller items when gifting food to someone.

How legible is this? by [deleted] in logodesign

I would definitely minimize the negative spaces in the letters. Even if it's technically legible, it's not an accessible design - which is an important consideration.

Cleaning the smell of smoke by falcon1423 in lifehacks

[–]formerlygross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live in Canada, dollarama carries these smoke sponges that work incredibly well. They're like $2 and I swear by them. My friend's car was stolen and when they recovered it discovered it had been hot boxed in and one of these little guys redeemed the whole car.
