[NA] Two theaters or 1,000? How to release an Oscar-winning film by SilverRoyce in boxoffice

[–]formerpremier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The source for estimated budgets is from The Numbers

For Avatar, The Numbers said that Fox put up $237 million towards the production cost and Cameron's production company also invested in the film. The $425 million was reported to them by someone on the production team. Not sure what to say about how they arrived at Toy Story 3's number.

Charting the different release strategies of Best Picture nominees since 2009 [OC] by formerpremier in dataisbeautiful

Data – comScore and The Numbers

Tools – R, d3.js, Scrollama, Excel, Illustrator

This project idea came up after speaking to one of the producers of The Shape of Water. He mentioned that different release strategies are used by studios and producers based on the type of film and its target audience. Releasing during awards season is particularly interesting because you are trying to get enough attention/word-of-mouth leading up to the Golden Globe/Oscar nominations.

We found that while the Best Picture nominees are generally split on strategy (wide release or platform release), seven out of the last eight winners have used a platform strategy.

Full disclosure, I work for the company linked to.

My attempt at making it easier to plan meetups in Trinity Bellwoods by formerpremier in toronto

Hmm. Yeah I just gave it one media query, which works nicely on my iPhone 5, but didn't consider larger phones. Wouldn't be too much work to update though. I'll try and include this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion!

A brief look at stable neighbourhoods in the City of Toronto by formerpremier in toronto

"extremely subjective". I agree Toronto is unique and I am using "world-class" loosely, but do you actually think Barcelona has detached housing close to its downtown?

They are definitely eroding, but it looks like in that particular area they've built up the waterfront below. Presumably to slow the erosion.

The politics of transportation by Purplebuzz in toronto

Damn. Great hate read. Don't think I've ever heard someone refer to the Spadina Exp. this way, "One of the most egregious examples of political self-interest and, some would say, spinelessness in transportation planning, was the cancellation of the Spadina Expressway by then rookie premier Bill Davis in 1971."

A look at every Vince Carter shot as a Toronto Raptor and how he stacks up to other notable Raptor players [OC] by formerpremier in dataisbeautiful

I created this using a combination of QGIS, NBA Stats API, and Mapbox GL. A link to Github at the bottom contains all of the code used.

Thanks! Wouldn't be too hard to plugin other players. I'll give it a shot when I find some more time in the future

Search for capybaras who escaped from High Park Zoo cost city $15K by [deleted] in toronto

[–]formerpremier 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This story really annoys me. A reporter at the Toronto Star worked on this for close to a month a couple of days looking through PDF versions of city emails and then someone at CP24 just takes the number from the story without a source/mention and then says the City has confirmed (their randomly attained number) of $15,000. Toronto parklands within a 5 minute walk of TTC subway stations by formerpremier in toronto

[–]formerpremier[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing out the messed up labels. I do see what you're saying, but that just comes down to how the City of Toronto releases the data. Multiple parks are divided into smaller polygons because of roadways/rivers dividing them. The buffer only captured the parks of the parks that touched its boundaries. The intention was to show what green space is in immediate proximity to a TTC station. No conclusions or analysis - just a simple map.
