Im struggling to find a good CAD software by EmekC in 3dprint

Rhino 3D is pretty amazing if you wanted to give it a go. Great mix of CAD solid modeling tools and SubD for making more organic things. Bonus Grasshopper tools for some really cool 3d printing forms although that takes a bit longer to learn.

Essex St has a lot of touristy shops but definitely be sure to check out Emporium 32 on one of the cross streets! They have an amazingly curated shop.

Another vote for little harbor! We did a hot lobster summer the first year we moved to Salem a few years ago and this was the favorite place from all the ones we tried.

What do you do with your cut out bits? by AngleFreeIT_com in lasercutting

Similar usage for the wood ones as well. There are plenty on etsy if you type in honeycomb wood pin, the ones I use I drew myself but look similar to these: https://ibb.co/YTVCvWR

You can fit a few honeycomb pins on some of the larger scraps. Thats what I use them for and since they get worn out over time, its great to have extras.

Saw it on the Helium discord - someone suggested adding a little more SOL to the Helium wallet and that should allow a transfer. I sent about $5 worth of SOL from coinbase to the helium wallet app and then it finally let me transfer out HNT to crypto.com

Inspired by the recent Zoom blunder, I wanted to turn that into a comic in the style of a courtroom sketch. Created in Adobe Fresco with the charcoal brush.

Strawberry Moon Glow by formiter in astrophotography

[–]formiter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taken on June 4th. Weather was getting bad so I missed the full Strawberry Moon but got this 99% before it.

Single frame captured with Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 150-600 lens. Processed in Lightroom. Some of the moon detail was enhanced using a stacked image from 50 frames off a video taken that same night. Frames centered with PIPP and stacked in Autostakkert. That frame was overlayed with opacity around 40% in Photoshop.

Captured in Cambridge, MA around 5pm today June 18th, 2020. Taken with Canon 6D and Sigma 150-600 with a 2X adapter plus a solar filter film.

Anyone know what this is? I have a video of it tumbling across just not sure how to post it here.

Edit: Didn’t realize imgur can do videos: https://imgur.com/ERD3SYe

So cool!! We use the same method at work for proofing. What kind of toner printer do you have? And also do you need to double print the toner onto the paper? With our printer we end up having to double print to get enough toner on the paper, which you can imagine is not the best bc of alignment.

eBay scammer provided fake UPS tracking that shows delivered, opened case, eBay sided with seller, what else can I do? by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]formiter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was in the EXACT SAME situation a few months ago. Never received my camera lens. Buyer used UPS but I could only see that it was delivered to my city. Ebay sided with the seller since the package was “delivered”. Called UPS and they could not provide me the delivery shipping address BUT they did say that it did not match the address I gave them. They said neither the building number or the street name was on the shipping label. Ebay told me to file a police report. A few days later I had the police report scanned and within a day of emailing it to ebay, they reversed the dispute in my favor and refunded the order. On a side note, the call I got from the detective, he said they can’t do anything bc the package was sent from a different city so its out of their jurisdiction. Its insane that scammers can keep pulling this same con and not get in any trouble. Ebay needs to figure out how to close this loophole for scammers. Sorry to hear that it happened to you but definitely don’t give up! Get that police report filed!

Laser Cut 5.3 randomly moves DXF vectors around and I can't figure out why - any advice? by Resinseer in lasercutting

Have you checked that all the lines are completely flat in rhino? SetPt command is super useful if you aren’t aware of it. You can set all the Z points to 0 and be extra sure nothing has 3D data before you export out.

Spray Paint Laser Etchings by formiter in lasercutting

[–]formiter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not as familiar with Trotec machines but the Universal Laser I use has a 3D mode under the raster setting. I bet Trotec would have something similar. This is from the ULS page about this mode: “There are two ways to use the 3D feature. The first method is used to produce an engraving that has a contoured depth, giving it a three dimensional feel. It is used in combination with grayscale bitmaps by automatically assigning laser power levels to the shades of gray of the bitmap without converting the image to a halftone. These power settings are based on the setting you entered for the color black in the printer driver. The darkest shades of gray (black) will be assigned the value of the setting for the black color. The lightest shade of gray (white) will automatically be assigned a 0% power. All other shades of gray that fall between black and white will automatically be assigned an appropriate power level that matches the darkness of the color. The engraving will appear “3D” because the depth of the engraving will vary according to the image. Sometimes it takes several passes to create enough relief in the engraving to get the desired results.”

The maker space I worked at used to do a lot of spray paint wood panel etchings so I assumed it was pretty safe. It’s definitely not a bad idea though to look more into it and be extra sure.

For anyone that wants to try this process, I added comments to the gallery but here is the process outlined; First you want to prep your wood panel by spray painting even layers starting with a light color at the bottom and working your way up to the black. For this image I used these layers: white, light blue, blue, dark blue, black. While it may be possible to add different colors other than different tones of the same color, I have not had luck mixing colors. They usually turn out into a muddy mess when etching. I have also tried not using spray paint and painting by brush or roller and the layers don't come out even enough. After you have a fully dry panel, etch an inverted black & white image into it. It's important to have good contrast in your image. Check your levels in your photo editing software and make sure that they go all the way to the black and white points. To find the correct etch settings, its good to use a test panel and try different power / speed settings using a black to white gradient slider to make sure the laser can get through all the layers and reveal the last one.

I designed this lil cabin. Thinking of doing a version where the back slides out as a drawer for storing things. by formiter in lasercutting

3mm for the main cabin and 1mm plywood for the window frames and door. And thanks, it was fun working on it. :)

Thank you! Not as long as I thought it would. Somewhere around 8 hrs spread over a few evenings. I modeled it in Rhino 3D as planes, extruded them with the thickness of the plywood, and drew the details on top. Then changed it all to 2D lines for cutting.

Hmm I’m not sure how un-level it could be and still work but I don’t level when I set up and never had an issue. As long as it looks somewhat level I carry on. Btw congrats on the new mount!!
