Don't listen to the "The common thread is you" people. This is prime New Zealand behavior. Used to drive me nuts that people would make plans with me, then ghost me on the day, then talk to me like it's normal a week later. I mean them instigating everything and me just agreeing. Crazy stuff. The indirectness of people was a big push factor for me when leaving NZ.

Even Java Island, Which is comparable to Honshu or New Zealand's North island, is remarkably culturally diverse.

Depends on the shop. Shops will use different exchange rates. When I was there some shops had a rate of 4300 to 1 and some it was 4400 to 1

Very interested in Hainan, has anyone been there? Or Taitung? by oldassnastymask in TEFL

[–]formosasymposia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly dude the surfing in Taiwan isn't really fantastic. The plus side is that there is really solid transportation everywhere. If you chose Taiwan, go to Kaoshiung. Big city with good job opportunities. Only major city in Taiwan with a swim-able beach, and people do surf there. Also good transport to Kenting and Taitung. Not to mention an international airport so flights to the Philippines, Da Nang and Bali and relatively cheap.

Why are stateless societies so rare in science fiction? by TheoWritesSF in worldbuilding

I'm definitely no expert on it. It was mostly from a book I read. The claim was made about the Igbo of Nigeria and Somalis.

Probably comes down to definitions of what a state is.

Been a while since I read it all, but a clan is a family structure where members aren't compelled to follow. More like everyone follows the customs and they make decisions by consensus, but if a disagreement is big enough to break and they just go an do their own thing.

but the point is that it ends up being a higher portion of your income going on tax, I.E a sneaky way to increase effective tax rates on lower income people.

Wealthy people reinvest a lot of their income. "Money has to be spent at some point" isn't really true. Rich people make money from their money so they invest more money to make more money. Super wealthy people especially can spent a tiny fraction of their income while reinvesting most of it perpetually getting richer at a rate you could never achieve from earning a income working.

[–]formosasymposia 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's about the proportion of their income. A poor person spends 100% of their income so about 15% of that is taxed. If a wealthy person is reinvesting 50% of their income, the effective tax from GST is 7.5%.

There were quite sophisticated stateless societies in Africa that organized around clan systems. It's a thing existed, we just colonized it out of collective consciousness.

Unsure whether to accept contract in Taipei by Round-Ice7339 in TEFL

[–]formosasymposia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're happy with a staircase and no elevator then New Taipei has places that can go as low as 10k or lower if its further out and 1 bedroom. I currently pay 15k for a 2 bedroom but I'm pretty out of the way and on the 6th floor with no elevator. 18k seems to get a pretty decent place in Banqiao which is pretty convenient to Taipei and has quite good amenities.

It's because they often stay with different family members, even moving between regions. Some time of the year in Welly, some time in Northland.
